Mercedes shows off Splitview display, other dashboard perks in the 2010 S-Class
Sure, the cold metal exterior looks like a regular old car, but the 2010 S-Class from Mercedes-Benz has a fuzzy technological heart, including an abundance of readout displays and a Splitview screen. Quite like it sounds, the Splitview display offers up one view to the driver (like a map), while the passenger sees a completely different image (like a movie, or a picture of somebody looking at a map), and after hearing all about it for the past while, Mercedes is actually giving us a glimpse of it in an overly-dramatic promo video for the latest S-Class to clutter up the roads. Check it out after the break.

So excactly like the range-rover mentioned on Engadget before?
Yes, but Mercedes did announce this quite some time ago whereas Land Rover only announced theirs this week.
I don't know why Merc are putting those nasty Audi fairy lights on though. They're tacky.
And again this is probably Korean or Japanese technology. Ha.
I see two dead people.
I'd love to drive and watch TV at the same time. All cars should be equipped with this type of dash. I'll devote 90% of my attention to watching TV because looking at the road and traffic is so boring.
The Hyundai Grandeur in Korea was the first car to have this technology. This was like last year though. The Grandeur is known as the Azera in the US.
Splitview. For multiple personalities and dysfunctional marriages. Only available at you local Mercedes Benz Dealer.
Well, would YOU want to have to ""talk" the whole trip long?
second the dysfunctional marriage. It's gonna be a lonely car ride.
Splitview....for when you want her to just shut up for a second.
hahhaha I knew someone would mention this
So true
Great, wonderful! Isn't cell phone use while driving bad enough? How many collisions, rear-enders, etc., will occur with a system like this in place? But who cares? M-B drivers are rich with deep pockets. Let loose the lawyers!
Not many theoretically: the S class automatically applies the right amount of brake depending on the distance of the cars in front and behind it.
You're an idiot. How exactly would a passenger watching a screen cause an accident? Also, you don't need to criticize benz owners for their success. Now go contribute something worth while to society.
Or you could get a standalone GPS unit and then everyone can watch whatever is playing on the screen and see where you're going. Not to mention probably saving lots of money.
no they can't, for safety reasons, the front screen can't show a video, TV, or a DVD that could distract the driver while driving, only the rear seats (the kids) can watch a DVD so the parents can keep them quiet...
what this system does is keep the front passenger (the woman in this case) from being restricted from watching her favorite DVD and simply makes her watch the DVD while the driver (the man) can only see the map from his seat....
so if they get a GPS (stand-alone) the front screen still can't show video! its a safety risk
plus if someone (obviously not you) is thinking of getting an S600, they have enough money to get the option
its not a toyota or a ford so no need for an external GPS :)
thanks
If you can afford a Merc S you're not going to be sticking some $150 tomtom on the windscreen... intergrated man!
I always thought this was the best application for this tech..... I always wondered why this would be needed on desktop or laptop screens..... Beside eliminating split view in multiplayer games.....
If this technology was applied to TVs it would make 2 player gaming pretty cool. Especially FPS games where each player could get their own big screen and it wouldn't be so easy to find out where your opponent was just by looking at their part of the screen.
So what does the person in the middle seat 2nd row see?
Only you can prevent forest fires.
you know that there are two screens on the back,,, no need to look ahead
True. I mean, how many people in Europe and Asia drive their own S-Class anyways?
90%.
S-Class, BMW7, Audi A8 are all sold as what the germans call "limousines" for people who like driving themselves. I guess you've got the LWB versions of the same for people who like to be driven (couldn't imagine parking one of those things), then your Maybach's / Rolls/ Bentleys etc for the next notch.
I remember many years ago, HP had a software installed on their Windows 3.1 PCs called dashboard, mimicking the dashboard of a car to navigate the computer, now cars are doing the opposite way, mimicking a computer.
Great more crap in the car thats going to break just when the warranty expires and is going to cost a freaking fortune to replace.
If you can afford a Mercedes you can certainly replace that..
Are you thinking of buying a 2010 S-Class in say 2020 or why would you bother? Anybodoy buying this thing new can afford any type of repair.
"What are you watching honey?"
"CNN, and you?"
"Bang Bros"
LOL. Love that!
Awaiting the first spectacular car cash that will grace the headlines of CNN.
What you cant tell is that they are actually drifting into oncoming traffic.
Car Cash on CNN?
Meh its not like people haven't just unlocked tv while driving for passengers anyway. In my dads old BMW7 there was a hack holding down a button on the nav/tv unit while changing the key position. I would guess anyone with a TV in their car who also happens to read engadget has worked out the relevant hack by now.
Did anyone else think of the Code Monkey song when reading this?
I don't see any splits in that clip......all I see is tall glass buildings .......perhaps some downtown somewhere ......... or should the tall buildings be splitting into two? cuz I'm not exactly sure what that video portrayed the title of the post..
look at 1:20
More specifically, from 1:20 to 1:24. For a nearly 2-minute video, there are more panoramic views of skyscrapers than this supposedly awesome new tech.
Alright, now I don't have to interact with the kids in the back (watching dvds on the seatback) or my wife sitting next to me. The future is now.
Now rides don't have to be awkwardly silent anymore...
Is it me or does that look like a accident waiting to happen! He's looking down at the screen while driving, when theres a 18 wheeler to the right and 2 lanes of traffic on the left with no divider! They so could've used a better picture than this. They must be hoping for their Active Lane Guidance to save them.
some states it's illegal to have a "dvd/tv" playing in the drivers view while the car is in motion.
Still dangerous - did some work on similar technology with BMW recently, and having the display in the center is a recipe for disaster. Can't talk about the specifics of the BMW version (which will replace the abhorrent iDrive) but suffice to say it will be much, much safer to use.
BMW WallTronic. The latest in carbon fiber wall technology to sonically and visually isolate the driver from the rest of the car.
They actually employ similar technology to allow 2 players to play head-to-head video games while still looking at the same screen...Instead of split screen you see something similar to this...Difference is you need to wear special glasses since you are most likely both in front of the TV...
I swear, I thought about this when I was ten.
How old are you now?
what a sexy car =)
i think this made my day
so basically the person in the back seat gets nothing but a blurry screen.
