R2E cable adds eSATA transfer abilities to RED camera
With NAB just about to get started in Las Vegas, CoolCameraGear is getting out ahead of the crowd with a newfangled adapter sure to please those who find themselves offloading gobs of RED footage. The R2E LEMO to eSATA cable essentially takes the burden away from your FireWire 800, FireWire 400 or USB 2.0 bus by enabling bits and bytes to flow over eSATA. RED camera users simply plug in their RED-Drive or RED-RAM using the original power adapter, then plug the LEMO end of the R2E cable into the drive and the other end into a standard eSATA port. Boom. Just like that, RED owners have instant access to eSATA transfers. For those unaware, eSATA support on camcorder is still a rarity, though the benefits are obvious for pros shuffling through multiple takes. Interested consumers can check this one out when the CoolCameraGear website goes live on April 20th for $230.

what, you were expecting something educational?
Mako @ Apr 16th 2009 1:45AM
I'll wait for the monoprice version.
MaxSMoke @ Apr 15th 2009 7:09PM
Um, am I reading this right? $230 for a Cable? Wow, and I thought Monster Cables were a rip off. Time to hit up my Hong Kong connection, get the same cable for $20, included with a free pocket-size Video/Music/Video Game Emulator and a Roast Duck!

>> "$230 for a Cable? Wow, and I thought Monster Cables were a rip off."
Let's not forget that this cable connects to a $17,000 camera... and that's the price before lenses, viewfinders, power, etc.
Sure, it's just a cable... but I doubt there is such a demand that Monoprice will step in...
Taylor. Yes, Taylor. @ Apr 16th 2009 11:58AM
Yeah, Just in case anyone is interested, that LEMO connector is avaliable on mouser (we buy them at work). Not too hard to solder onto (that's what they're designed for) I'm sure the eSata connector is there too.
But then... none of us have one of those do we?

Taylor. Yes, Taylor. @ Apr 16th 2009 11:58AM
Forgot to mention, the LEMO connector is about $20.

red accessories don't come cheap, we broke a couple of the wingnuts at the place I used to work at, they're ratchet style & a little flimsy, to get a replacement set of 5 more costs $100
Saad Rabia @ Apr 15th 2009 7:12PM
Monster, is that you?
Juan Marquez @ Apr 15th 2009 7:16PM
No it's the RED bloody renmants left by a MONSTER!
Matt @ Apr 15th 2009 7:20PM
*sigh* So you can copyright a color now?
I said red in this post, will I get sued?
rcarm @ Apr 15th 2009 7:45PM
You need to type "red" in uppercase letters to get sued.
NoAndThen @ Apr 15th 2009 8:02PM
@Matt: No, you can't copyright a color.
See: http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/05/28/t-mobile-loses-magenta-suit-against-telia-we-try-not-to-laugh/
It's really exclusively for the all caps word RED. (
Joe @ Apr 15th 2009 7:21PM
It's not like this cable is for everyone to worry about price, this is for those that owns RED. I'm sure many can't afford a RED
HUKI365 @ Apr 15th 2009 7:55PM
Yes I am sure of that.
But RED cameras are 17g for boy only. Compare this to the Genesis, which is nigh on 250g for the body only.
RED is very expensive for you gadget fanboys who think a $600 iPhone is expensive, but its nothing in an industry where a set of good prime lens can cost a quarter of a million dollars.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Apr 15th 2009 7:22PM
Wow. Great. So, I plug it in and it mounts as a FAT32 disk?
Except FAT32 can't store files larger than 4GB...
Nick Nelson @ Apr 15th 2009 7:38PM
Awesome! Unless, of course, if you edit on a macbook pro like me. I haven't found an eSata express34 card that doesn't cause a kernel panic every time I export my work from FCP (I'm stuck using FW800 until this gets fixed).
Lando Calrissian @ Apr 15th 2009 11:22PM
I thought OS X never crashes!

Show of hands. Who here owns a RED camera? (and no i do not, but i can dream!)

god damn comment system.
remainder of my above post:
But i can't get sued for that a.)because it's a forum, in discussion. And, b.) because i'm not using it for any commercial use, I'm actually talking about RED.
It's like saying you can't buy an apple because Apple exists.

Anyways... yeah this cable is ridiculously expensive, but if you can afford a camera that can easily exceed 30k with lenses and whatnot, this is not even a drop in the bucket for the convenience and speed boost it surely brings.
gordon cyrus @ Apr 15th 2009 8:09PM
check my buddies camera the A-CAM II from Ikonoskop dot com in Stockholm, will kick RED's ass in many interesting ways...
first the price you can get like 2 or 3 for the same price as the red, second the endless options of lenses, size, works with sony batteries etc, etc... be out in the fall... get on the waiting list now... for anybody in France I'll hook you up.

yeah forgot, it's also the camera that loves you, you can't beat that.

It's 1080p compared to the 4k of the Red One, right? For 6,950 Euros? Plus, you're neglecting to include Red's impending releases in your comparison. The Scarlet will deliver 3k resolution on a 2/3" sensor for $3750, ready to shoot out of the box, or $2500 for the body only. If that image sensor isn't big enough, you can buy a body with an S35 sensor at $7000 with up to 5k resolution or a body with an FF35 sensor at $9750 with up to 6k resolution. Personally, I'll keep my eye on Red for the time being. I'm not going to be in the market for a couple years yet, but the entry-level Scarlet looks pretty good to me.
kanebake @ Apr 16th 2009 11:09AM
Looks like the A Cam is an HD cam, as in a quarter of the resolution of the Red camera.
Also it does up to half of the frame rate of the red.
It looks like an interesting student budget camera. That will compete on price with people who can't afford the Red. It doesn't seem to have the features of the lower end Red offering like scarlet either.
Bu t i say the more the marrier.

I am actually the DAT on a RED film right now. I could really use this cable... it would make my job go much faster.

Science and materials, I would say.

@keithhh: We don't need such silly fallacy around here; it's clearly made from unicorn blood and "oxygen free, superior wound, magentic shielded, BS coated..." proprietary connector.

Hmm I use Fw 800 now to connect the drive. Than I transfer the data to two internal drives and two external G-Tech drives via eSata.
I need to get a new esata card, the lacie one i have is inconsistent. Once i get a new one like a Tempo card this might make sense.
And the cable is cheap, it's custom build cable for a specific purpose with a niche market. What do you expect.
Lunchbox @ Apr 17th 2009 7:08PM
I use Firewire too, but I have had problems with the bus ports on the drives going out. TIP: Always use the external power when connecting the Mag to your computer. If you don't, you can blow those ports...
