You know, we were as surprised as anyone to see a totally
out-of-context quote of ours used on a Monster Cable site (without permission, mind you) to sell the company's "Beats by Dre" headphones (you can see the screen cap after the break). It's ironic, really, given that we currently have a blacklist in place for the overpriced cable-maker because of their rotten business practices (like regularly
going after other companies that
happen to use the word monster in their name,
faking performance tests, and generally
bilking customers out of their hard-earned dough). Regardless, if Monster wants to use a quote from Engadget, that's no problem. We suggest this one:
Monster Cable sucks.
Update: Monster has removed the quote from the site. Now that was fast. Power to the people!
[Thanks, Michael K.]

I will never buy Monster cable!

In the same vein as infusing Engadget Mobile with a healthy dose of magenta, the main site should be renamed MonsterGadget for a day or so.
Joseph @ Apr 17th 2009 2:46PM
I smell something else.
I think this would be a good opportunity to post photoshops of monster cables sucking. Maybe a prize awarded for the best fake monster cable ad??

I will never by Monster cables either.
I just can't see $90 for an HDMI cable. I don't care if I'm building a SPACE STATION... Monster cables are too much.

Err, crap, click the very left sidebar on the link I posted. Sorry about that.

As much as you annoy me from time to time Engadget, please for the love of all things awesome, invoke pain on Monster!
a ham sandwich @ Apr 17th 2009 2:48PM
exactly! engadget sounds like gadget, which rhymes with hatchet, which is a tool that a MONSTER could use to scare you. therefore, you're in danger of infringement. i'd consider changing your name...otherwise...you know...you'll get sued. :P
BigDaddyM @ Apr 17th 2009 2:50PM
If you follow the link, Engadget does "say" it so it is a quote... However, I like Engadget's new quote but I doubt Monster will ever use it.
(Can I use the word "Monster" in a post without getting sued?)

No, Time Warner against Monster. I don't think Monster stands a chance against the Time Warner legal team. I'd be nice if someone would put Monster in its place once and for all. I'm tired of their ridiculous lawsuits going after companies that can't afford a better legal team. Cowards. And yeah, their products are overpriced dollar store garbage.

Stung47000 @ Apr 17th 2009 3:31PM
As markus said below, here is the Engadget page where the quote actually appears, which in context sounds more like Engadget was imitating Dave Chappelle:

I hate Monster too, but is was said.
Phenoum @ Apr 17th 2009 3:31PM
I want to see a comprehensive monoprice vs Monster review - with testing of cables - signal loss, and the average-user's ability to see a difference - do an exclusive on how overcharged the cables are - what materials costs are, etc.
Lawsuit would be fun - but do em one better - Run a hardcore Engadget review of their crap vs monoprice - make a hub about how much they suck - even thought you boycott them - allow it just this once to step on em a little bit :)
Cmon Josh - i Know you want to...... :)

lol @ Monster but you cant have a law suit unless Engadget proves like 1000 people went and bought the headphones because of the quote itself(legal concept of unjust enrichment)

Verified Insanity @ Apr 18th 2009 12:25AM
Ahh, bad ol' Monster Cable brings the Engadget family together...
After all, Monster Cable's quality and overpricedness is the ONE thing that all Engadget readers can agree on, whether they be Mac or PC fanboys/girls.
PS: SUE SUE SUE SUE SUE SUE SUE SUE SUE.
Or at least inflict pain? For the love of awesomeness, do something!
Mike @ Apr 18th 2009 12:38AM
TOASTY!!!!
Eh? @ Apr 18th 2009 11:45AM
Would be interesting if enough people got fed up with Monster's antics and obtained a simple business license (in some places as low as $39), registering every conceivable combination of "Monster " they could think of, then making a simple 1-page webpage using that name for the search engine spiders to find. Just to spite their legal team. It'll never happen though, too much danger of being sued spontaneously. Just a wild run away of the imagination.
Slick @ Apr 19th 2009 3:12AM
a lawsuit would be sweet... and for the settlement, maybe they can finally do legitimate cable quality comparisons (cough minimal cough)

How bright do you have to be to quote a website dedicated to technology, with thousands upon thousands of readers, out of context without permission? Oh wait, all of that again, AND the aforementioned technology website isn't your company's biggest fan.

Benson @ Apr 19th 2009 1:00AM
Now, now, that's unfair. They had a quote from CNN, which was certainly based on fact.
Although when the best thing you can say about cans is that they might be better than Bose, I'm not at all sure why you'd want to call attention to that.
