It's certainly not unheard of for Nokia to take existing models in its lineup, tweak 'em with slightly improved hardware and software, and re-release them -- see the
N85 /
N86,
N93 /
N93i,
N95 /
N96, and so on -- so we can totally buy that the company's hard at work at updating its
5800 for a future revision.
DigiTimes (which admittedly doesn't have a pristine record for nailing these sorts of rumors) cites "sources" with Taiwanese component suppliers as saying that Nokia wants to replace the 5800's resistive touchscreen with a capacitive one -- the S60-based Samsung
i8910 does that, by the by -- in an effort to better compete with its rivals. That would certainly make the device more usable and responsive, but in all likelihood, this isn't a simple matter of swapping out a component (how would you use that totally awesome plectrum, after all?) so we'd expect this to be more of an indication that Espoo's looking to move to capacitive going forward, particularly as it transitions over to the
Symbian Foundation's builds.
IPHONE 3G...ftw
For the witless?
Certainly in your case.
would be nice but i already bought the 5800
How is it? I'm thinking about getting one, but it seems a little slow...
it is slow.. and you really do need the stylus to get the small buttons.. even the scroll bar along the right. maybe a resistive screen would help the cause, but the OS is still sluggish on that phone.
I have a 5800 and am happy with it too. A capacitive screen would be OK if they're introducing flick scrolling but otherwise a bit pointless on this phone.
As for the OS, it's fine with me - a bit slow on SMS but generally OK.
It's not going to be 5800 for sure, they would have to make it quite a bit different since it would require a class screen.
100% correct. Apple innovates, while others follow. Nokia is now part of the "me too" crowd.
Nokias can get capacitive touch screens but those sweet ass HTC phones I'd kill for (I'm looking at you Fuze) can't? WTF is that?
Fuze??? Seriously???
Yes Fuze. I'm a WinMo junkie and the Tilt is bullshit so the Fuze was the best option. Til the Touch Pro 2 drops into lap anyway
I hate people who think they're "Junkies" of something
I hate people who spell the word player like 'playa'.
When you own an iPhone 3G...everything else just feels like "a little less"
No it doesn't, Im an iPhone 3G owner, writing this on it, and mac fanboy, but I'm jealous of people with the G1, Touch pro 2 and anything with a decent camera, like
the OmniaHD. And I think the Palm Pre is the best thing ever.
That's interesting as iPhone has less features than what my old dumb phone had in 2004.
you guys are still waiting for Copy/Paste and 99 other essential features
pity you....
the iphone lacks in too many way to compare with nokia
iPhone superiority? really?
omg, the iphone totally uses wifi, all you other phones just rip off the awesomeness that is Apple innovation...Look at these icons, does your phone use icons on its interface? It does? Apple technology right there, I'm tellin ya...See this, right here? the iPhone has a button on it, does yours? wow, look at all those buttons, playing off Apple, "If one button is awesome, all these buttons must be killer! Take that iPhone! First!" Yours has a memory card slot? What for? iPhone has built-in memory. Your crappy phone has a removable battery? a amazing call quality, and doesn't need to be synced to iTunes, and doesn' t need AT&T...whatever, iPhone r00Lz!!!11!!!1!
douchebag.
When the 5800+ or whatever comes out, and it has a capacitive screen, I'm in, nuff said.
in my opinion, it's not the hardware on the 5800 that needs the most change -- it's the software. resistive screens don't offer the same tactile experience as a capacitive (i say this as an iPhone owner), but frankly usability trumps tactility. nokia needs to hire some new software engineers and start over, instead of shoehorning a non-touch OS onto a 99% touch interactive phone.
If this is a variant it would be more akin to the comparing the N95 to the N95 8GB rather than the N85 to the N86 which has different specifications. That said, I'm not sure they will - capacitive screens work best on wide screened phones where there is plenty of room because they're less precise than resistive screens. The 5800 is a narrow bodied phone (which is why, in my experience, I find it a lot more useful as a phone than a Storm, iPhone or the Omnia I used to have) so resistive probably suits it better.
The 5800's screen is pretty sensitive as resistive screens go - obviously it isn't as sensitive as a capacitive screen but then, as mentioned, each type of screen has its trade offs.
Oh as for usability it's fine - there's at least some logic to the way applications are stored because you can create subfolders unlike the frankly bizarre way that Apple does it. Up to 9 pages (or is it 11?) of applications to shift through? I mean, seriously, what the hell?
About time other companies are putting capacitive touch-screens into their products.
Resistive should die already.
not so fast...
http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/19/stantums-mind-blowing-multitouch-interface-on-video/
the 5800 is really good and faster then the iphone, it just looks slow because it has a resistive screen so you have to use your nail and a bit more strength where as capacitive you just swipe
I guess you never used them side-by-side then.
iPhone FTW!
GeekGirl STFU!
awwwwwww sorry its true winbloze 6.1, nawww hate to take the batt. out every day when it freezes up :(
@GeekGirl
Didn't you get the memo? Nokia doesn't use WinMo for its smartphones.
@disciple83: You do know the only reason they say those statements are to incite the terribly long-winded defensive flames as you just posted.
and yet they just discovered what we knew for a long time copy and paste
and NO the new OS with the knew bits and bobs should have come a long time ago since Apple is superior. what incomputent fools
Dude you wrote "knew" when you meant "new" and spelled incompetent wrong. You aren't exactly making yourself sound like a genius.
yes, you are wrong.
i concur with bk7. you are wrong. Back to your cave.
DO IT TO THE N97. NOW. thanks.
If Nokia buys 2 million capasitive screens they probably wont be going to 5800. I'd guess theres some miscommunications in the works. Nokia orders parts for touchscreen phone -> tells vendors they are for a 5800ish phone -> vendors tell all 5800 will move to capasitive.
Id guess there will be a new product announcement soon, could speculate as theres new top model N97, and music phone 5800, but nothing in Exx slot that next one will be a E phone, lets say E80.
I would low to see a touch screen phone using E71 like design (without keyboard). That would be nice.
*love to see, sometimes fingers think faster than brain.
Besides the capacitive touch, this needs a T.I. OMAP3 like the pre and proper drivers for UI graphics acceleration.. .Then we'll talk..
Give me capacitive on the N97 and I'm sold, I don't care how much it costs. It's great that at least some companies are taking steps toward implementing this screen technology, as only having the G1 and iPhone as products using this is ridiculous (US 3G spec, I know there are others). I'm tired of the bullshit excuse that "people overseas need handwriting recognition"...that's fine, give them a crappy resistive version and give everyone else capacitive.
Hopefully Nokia makes a large-scale transition to capacitive and sets an example for companies like MS so that they can start moving forward on providing capacitive abilities in WinMo 6.5 and 7 instead of this far too long-lived, cheap, plastic excuse for a "touchscreen."
iphone FTW!
Christ, yet another "teh ipgone is rulez lol!!11!". Well if you didn't realise, if one wants an iPhone one can go and get an iPhone. It's not like some exclusive invitation only/leave your keys in the bowl club. And unless you actually receive royalties from people buying the thing, why do you fucking care who buys it and who doesn't?
Sweet baby Jebus
It should of been built with a capacitive screen from the very start, but like any other thing, its about profits, and they know people would buy it again if it had a capacitive screen. With that and a huge overhaul of the Symbian OS, it would make a killer phone.
apple iphone fans are crazy.
It could be for Nokia 5900 Express Music or whatever the next model is!
