AEE boasts that its new "Mini DV" camera is the "world's smallest"
AEE Wireless' new "Mini DV" camera may or may not actually be the "world's smallest" video camera (alright, it's probably not), but it certainly has a strong claim to the title of least imaginatively-named, and it is, in fact, pretty darn small. What's more, unlike some other world's smallest cameras, this one is actually a full-fledged consumer device, including some controls, a built-in lithium-ion battery, a USB connection, and a microSD card slot, which handles all of the storage duties as the company has ditched any internal memory to keep the size down. You'll even get some full 640 x 480, 30 fps video out of the thing, plus some 2-megapixel JPEG images. Interestingly, while an official price is a bit hard to come by, a number of online retailers already seem to be offering the camera for between $85 and $159.

Mini DV?
So it use a DV casette too?
Josh @ Apr 18th 2009 6:28AM
No, "Mini DV" as in "Miniature Digital Video", not "MiniDV".
Taylor @ Apr 18th 2009 6:53AM
Then really it should be called a miniature Digital Video camera, not a MiniDV camera.
Difference.
Pascal Christian @ Apr 18th 2009 1:03PM
or mini DV at least, you don't need a capital M for 'miniature'
pete @ Apr 18th 2009 9:47PM
seriously, they should have been smart enought to figure out the "MiniDV" was already taken
DoctorHair @ Apr 18th 2009 6:27AM
AEE was demo'ing this at the HK Electronics Fair this week.
Was a bit disappointed with the battery life quoted to me. When I asked if there was a way to turn off the wireless in order to improve battery life, the sales guy seemed confused by the question. Didn't see a way on the box to do that.
And given the quotation I was given on a minimum order qty of 200, the wide spread of retail prices seems about what I'd expect for markup between FOB China and retail.
Jordan @ Apr 18th 2009 7:50PM
What was the battery life you were told?
j3ff86 @ Apr 18th 2009 6:28AM
Haha, exactly what I was thinking.

since when has 640x480 been "full"...?
Dr. Spaceman @ Apr 18th 2009 6:39PM
Since it became progressive instead of interlaced?

I have been using a First Person Perspective video camera for some time. Recording to a SD card with a viewable active screen and captured to a vga resolution of 640x480 in *.asf format. The device shown on this web page looks like a spy cam, packaged with a unit and clunked together with a sd card. Not impressed. If this had been a HD resolution of 1280x720p then I would have given praise.

Attach it to an RC aircraft or helicopter and you could get great shots of your neighborhood or whatever you want.

I've got one of these and despite the claim of 30 FPS on the box and in the instruction manual, it only does 20 FPS.

"alright" is a one-word spelling of all right. It's commonly used informally.

I need this for exactly the same purpose the picture shows. I want to record my in-line skating trip. It either that or finding a way to strap a conventional digital camera to my chest. Where are the sites for the retailers that are selling these?

The MD80 can record and charge at the same time (per a seller). Plugging the unit into the pocketable Duracell USB Instant Power Charger ($25.00), the unit should be able to get close to 6 hours of record time (max for the 8 GB microSD). This will be great for autocross and other sporting events. Terracode.com will be reviewing the MD80 Mini DV in the near future. It is currently on its way from Hong Kong to the USA.

I bought one of these for a hiked up price (U.S. retailer) and what I found with this unit is the stated 30fps is an absolute lie. No matter what I do with it; It will only produce 20 fps on a full battery. Also the microphone is really quite poor. The positive line from the mother board to the mic was barely hanging on and I had to re-solder it on. Added some fabric on top of the mic for reduced wind effect, but it is still terrible, hahaha. Really heavy for such a small unit compared to others as well (when talking center of gravity for RC helicopters and other things where a gram does make a difference, 50+ grams compared to other units for less cost, same quality or barely less, 10-20 grams, and does what the box/company states it does). Too much hype on this one, that's for sure.
