LaCie debuts 8TB 4big Quadra, new RAID bundles at NAB
Not sure if you've noticed, but NAB is in full swing over in Las Vegas. Not one to let a spotlight pass it by, LaCie has today introduced a new 8TB model of its 4big Quadra alongside a trio of new storage bundles for professionals who need gobs of free space and loads of speed. The 4big Quadra is a 4-bay RAID solution that handles hot-swappable disks and seven RAID modes, and by hitting up one the outfit's new combos (8TB, 16TB and 32TB), you also get a 4-port eSATA II PCI Express Card 3Gb/s card. Check 'em this May starting at $1,999.

they should have made the orb thing Red or Orange. First thing I thought of when I saw the post was "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that..."
Nothing that 10 minutes and a soldering iron can't fix....
red usually indicates failure...which would be appropriate for anything LaCie makes....
hehe, it looks like something from Portal. Does it flood the room with deadly neurotoxins?
The first thing I thought... oh, another way to loose 8TB of data.
I say this after having a LaCie Big drive fail again this week for the 4th time!
LaSuck.
lol lacie sucks
I know they just do rebranding, but i think they rebrand defective samsung hard drives.
One day someone will design the walls of their house with these externals..... It might be me.....
There can't be a legitimate home usage for all of that storage...
Your house will be outdated by the time they finish building it.
@telepheedian
You'd be surprised how fast an iTunes library grows when your significant other finds out she can watch all her favorite tv shows commercial free. I'm almost up to 1Tb now.
@telepheedian - Its always nice to be able to have RAID5, for speed and redundancy.
flip them backwards and reap the benefits of free heating. Hopefully you live in alaska.
@telepheendian
I have a WHS storing my music, backups and I'm ripping my DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray collection. I'm pushing 5TB and haven't even put a dent in my 500 standard DVDs. So yes, there are some people who need that much space.
Exactly my point. Ripping a DVD is legal gray area (but everyone does it anyway ;)).
HAL would be proud.
How about an optional black and red color scheme?
AI not included.
LaCie should design PC cases. They're better at design than Apple.
Looks like a washing machine.
Yay! More tripe from Lacie! ...if you want to loose ALL your data, instead of just big chunks of it, I highly recommend these.
I'm sorry, probably going to get down voted for going off subject, but why do so many people misspell LOSE and spell LOOSE instead.
I'm not trying to offend anyone, but even on the 2nd comment, Brian! did the same thing. Is it just one of those things that people aren't aware of or something? Has no one else pointed this out to them? Do they think it's the same as "My shirt fits loose?" I'm really just curious because I see this mistake done a lot.
Alright, if i misspelled anything I know someone is going to tear me a new one.
Simple Answer. Brian and Ed are the same person.
Complex Answer. Their browser doesn't support spell check or has it disabled & they failed 2nd grade.
Naw, I just typed too many oooooos. But your right, my fingers went and mixed up the words. Still, it does not change the fact that I have a failed LaCie drive here. The only saving grace is that (because it has failed so many times) I now just use it for temp and game app storage - so nothing important is gone. I only had to reinstall Warhammer really.
But I am not Ed - we just share the same low IQ. I know I do because I bought LaCie to begin with. You can stamp moron on me for that one.
Ironically, that ""My shirt fits loose" sentence should have actually read "My shirt fits loosely" because it's an adverb. Just sayin'...
Reminds me of GlaD0s LOL.
Lacie makes great drives, but like any hard drive most have a life of 3-5 years - that's just a hard drive fact- not specific to Lacie. I own the 2TB drive and it rocks- plus the 1.5TB, 1TB, and a few 500GBs. Never lost anything, but I back-up on a regular basis- when a drive crashes, I use the new one and back that up. Just a fact of the digital age.
lacie doesn't make anything, ever take one apart? its just a samsung drive (most of the time)
At this point, i must ask, why not a server?
I will never spend another cent with this company. I have owned three different models of external drives from them and they all failed with catastrophic results. ReadyNAS NV+ FTW!
It is the case with other brands as well..There are going to be failures in all brands. Just for your info, the number of issues with WD and Seagate products are unbelievable and 60% higher than LaCie.
I have had amazing experience with LaCie drives especially the 2big Quadra and Rugged Hard drives. On the other hand, 4 Western Digital drives have died on me. It is unbelievable. There should be a new word to describe the word hate for their drives. However, there are people who love their product as well.
The ReadyNAS is awesome for network storage. They have a new one the NVx now. Oh, I suppose they have the ReadyNAS Pro now that I am looking too. 6 drives for the Pro.
I do a lot of multimedia work so I need my storage local, but for most people the ReadyNAS is super great for a central home storage device. Sure, if you are a unix guy you can build your own shuttle PC do to everything the ReadyNAS does for less, but for someone who wants a plug-and-play solution - totally great.
HARDAC
Thank you, I actually like to keep my data. Anything but LaCie.
If it weren't for the Silicon Image chips they use in their S-ATA PCI-E cards, this would be alright.
That's a PCI-X card, not PCI-e - two completely different standards meant for completely different markets.
I have bad experience with this brand.
Sorry... I'm a professional photographer and have had more LaCie's crash right after the warrenty was up. One cost me $2,300 to recover. In short... they do suck and their beautiful enclosures really keep the heat in. Great design job. Also, their drives are anything from Maxtor to Seagate!
I love Lacie drives I swear by them.
I have one Lacie drive that is 320gb and is 4 years old and is still running great!
I have a western digital mybook that is 750gb and only 1 year old and is starting to have problems.
32 TB lol, oh my god, but then you think about it, we need MORE!!!
That's enough for quite a few blu-ray rips.
Just what do you think you are doing dave?
I'v heard so many horror stories about LaCie drives failing. I've had a 120GB drive for over 7 years with out a problem. I've also acquired 2 500GB, a 1TB, and a portable FireWire powered drive. All with no problems under heavy video editing use. Maybe I'm just lucky. I recommend them to everyone. I suppose it could just be that the people with failed drives, though in the minority, are much more vocal.
