Panasonic developing 1080p twin-lens P2 camcorder for native 3D captures
You know that 3D bandwagon you're still hesitant to jump on? We get the feeling that this year's NAB show may just push you over the top. Shortly after hearing of Fujifilm's newest P2 memory cards comes this, a conceptual camcorder in which to eventually slot 'em in. Currently, Panasonic's 3D Full HD Camera Recorder is merely a prototype, but it's made clear that the company intends to bring this to market as soon as possible. Essentially, the device will boast a twin-lens system for capturing 3D footage natively in 1080p, and all of the video streams will be stored on Panny's professional P2 cards. It's hard to say if this would even be useful for 2D shooting on the side, but with practically every major studio at least considering (if not committing to) 3D production, we'd say it's a solid investment on Panasonic's part either way.

I still don't think 3D will ever take off, but this is pretty cool.
and your stillll wrong
I have to agree. I really hope it does not take off. I mean some of these animated movies in 3D here and there is fine, but every movie in 3D and TV shows in 3D - screw that.
@Jason
Don't worry, unlike eating too much sugar and sweets, watching too much 3D HDTV content doesn't cause increased risk of cancer, insulin dependance or any other health cause. You just need to leave the couch sometimes. I think just about any show could evolve from the addition of 3D TV.
If the intenret was avaialble back in the mid 1900s, you'd probably see some folks complaining about 'every show in technicolor? Eh, it was fine when it was monsters on Lost in Space but the million dollar pyramid in technicolor? Geesh! What a waste of technology/money/gemmick to get ppl ot watch bad shows.'
Even more recently, it was probably some people were complaining about having every mainstream tv show in hd would be a 'waste'. There's no reason I need to see a talk show in HD. Geesh. It was fine when it was discovery channel's exploration of ancient pyramids but david letterman??
Really though, the more technology the better inthe long run.
@ Wes
You might wanna do some research on "Virtual Reality" especially with video games.
In the 80's that was the future too.
It took off like the hindenburg...
Two words - 3-D Porno!!
In all seriousness, think about how important online porn has been to the development of the internet. Download speeds, video streaming, online sales, live chat. Do you think we'd have all of that this far if it hadn't been for porn?LLike it or not, porn really did help push the internet to where it is now. It is a pretty good chance that you'll start seeing 3-D porn either for sale or streamable on the net within the next two years.
as someone who owns a 3d monitor I can say 3d porno is quite good- though there are only several films out there
I agree that all this 3D nonsense will not take off... at least not any time soon. Seriously, who the hell wants to wants to wear speacial glasses just to TV? That shit will NOT fly and you would have to be an idiot to think it will. It's fine for the occasional IMAX movie or TV special, but I promise you that 90% of the people out there won't put up with it for every day TV.
And aren't these new 3D formats targeting 120Hz TVs for best performance? Yeah, good luck with that. Look how long it is taking to get people onto the HDTV bandwagon. That damned digital transition alone has been delayed for years and years. Only the people with the newest and most expensive HDTVs have 120Hz capable TVs. You would basically be asking almost everyone to buy new ones.... even those with fairly recent HDTVs. If someone releases a 3D TV that doesn't require glasses... same situation. You're asking everyone to scrap their existing TVs.
We may eventually get to 3D displays, but there won't be any fast "revolution". It's going to be a painfully slow grind just as the ongoing transition to digital and HDTV. You may have heard of the global recession? Yeah, it's fucking huge and it's still here. That will only slow things down.
The lens look like a binocular. Also this baby might be shine in full hd porn ;p.
Ummm.... Reverse doggie style so it looks like she's actually riding the viewers crotch- sounds exciting.
WTF is reverse doggie style? LOL Do you mean reverse cow-girl?
Something that only very athletic porn stars can do...
This is probably the coolest thing ever
Wow
I wonder what that hot MILF from across the street is going to think when she catches me looking through her bedroom window with this thing?
Game on?
Pervert?
I don't really care about the camcorder, but how the hell do I stop your AVG advert making noises on every page?
Firefox + Adblocker
They have ads here? And, I've heard of of these things called, "pop ups" but have never seen them, strange...
i dont see ANY ads
:)
firefox + ad block plus FTW
safari+adblock
Safari... lol.
Get Avast!
omfg.....is that wall-e's head!
That's Wall-E
Nice camera, but they blew the budget on the camera and got a crappy tripod from Wal-Mart.
But what do you choose for the 2d version? The left or the right capture?
Shouldn't this camera have two view finders? One for each lens? Or is that just blasphemy?
Looks like a funky lens mounted on an HPX-170 right now.
You are correct, it should have two viewfinders. Like the RED Scarlet 3D render.
it scares me to think how much that puppy is going to cost.
The HPX-170 body it's sitting on is about $5K US retail. So if it were just the matter of the lens, viewfinder and electronics it would probably still come in at under $10K, especially if they keep the horrid, ultra-low-resolution viewfinders currently found on the HVX-200A/HPX-170.
That being said Panasonic would get upfront fast in 3D with something like that. Imagine the flood of indie 3D films; probably showing the big boys what creative 3D is without the $150M price tag.
Looks like one lens to me...
Until the whole industry standardizes the 3D lens technology and technical usage as well as create a standard medium on which to bring the shots into postproduction, the whole 3D cinema bullshit is a real pain in the ass for the postproduction houses.
Try match-moving such a shot for 3D enhancements before ranking me down, bro...
Shouldn't match-moving be actually beneficied by shooting in 3D? I mean, the whole point of match moving is recreating a virtual plate for additions, right? Or am I being too simplistic?
Well, nope. You need to match-move two plates actually, and both have to line up together. It's really not that simple. Unfortunately.
This can only be useful if 3D TVs without glasses will become widely available. Which I doubt is gonna happen any time in next 5 or even 10 years. There is no way I'm watching my TV shows in those stupid 3D glasses.
How does one get pushed over the top of a 3D bandwagon, onto which one has not yet jumped?
Wall-E!
For the Dreamworks pictures wouldn't they just have to put a second camera next to the primary and render both to get the right and left channels?
I know nothing about the process after it is rendered, but that part would be easy at least.
Well, it's not that simple. What about focus points? Imagine your eyes. Not only do you "cross" your eyes, but also change the focal plane when focusing on a close subject for example. And the opposite when focusing on a distant object.
Similarly, you have to rig your cameras this way. Or not, totally depends on the final usage and workflow (hence my previous comment on industry standardisation).
Sad day for people suffering strabism...
If Panasonic really understands what most people want they would take note from RED and Sony:
- More than 3D, people want a camera that captures native 1080p (like the XDCAM EX codec) with moderately high data rates (+100Mb/s, unlike the XDCAM codec [35Mb/s]). Note: Panasonic has already achieved this data rate with the HVX200, but somehow the EX1 @ 35Mb/s gets a higher quality, "deeper", image.
- If not interchangeable lenses, people want a lens with a real iris, hard stops with marks on the focus ring, and relatively shallow DOF.
- At least a half inch chip, if not larger. Ideally a 2/3 in. CCD, or like RED, a 12MP CMOS.
- Gamma control, and the ability to turn Gamma off. This was something that Cinealta brought to prosumers with the EX1, from the F900.
- Better Knee control.
- More film-like white reproduction.
- Like I said, native 1080p, none of this anamorphic BS. Panasonic has been lying about this since the HVX200, saying that it was a 1080p capable camera. 1280x1080 recorded interlaced, with a 1.5X stretch to 1920, converted to progressive is not even close.
Panasonic is losing their customer base to Sony and RED, and they need to do something soon, and this must start by treating the prosumer as an intelligent person that can see through format lies (like DVCPro HD being capable of true 1080p). Frankly, even though the HVX200 was a pioneer in the prosumer HD market, and is still respected as a "great" camera for the price, it doesn't even compare to the EX1. Win us back Panasonic!
To me, it seems
glorious.
the problem is that 3D is inevitable. movie companies are trying to curb cam torrent downloading; and 3D seems to be the best/easiest way to prevent that (worked pretty well for pixar i suppose)
dear vivid producers: purchase this camera please
i really start to think the world is coming to an end.
