Plantronics Voyager PRO gets purchased, unboxed early
Plantronics isn't planning to share intimate details about its Voyager PRO Bluetooth headset until April 23rd, but evidently its supply chain executives didn't exactly touch base with marketing before sending out stock to Best Buy. Jeff and John both managed to procure the $119.99 Bluetooth headset over the weekend, and we've got the shots to prove it. Based on the teaser site down in the read link, this here headset should be it's most advanced yet, but for a buck twenty, it better answer and respond to our calls without us having to intervene.
Update: Plantronics pinged us to say the price point here should be $99. Interesting.
[Thanks, Jeff and John]

Early reviews say this product is outstanding but we will have to wait to see a side-by-side comparison with the Apple BT headset... because Apple invented the BT headset... And all touchscreen phones and icons....
Apple also invented the cell phone. everything else is a KIRF
Pies @ Apr 20th 2009 2:05PM
I hear Apple invented God.
sacapuntas @ Apr 20th 2009 2:20PM
The more that I read engadget the more I am convinced that the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden that corrupted man's soul was an Apple. :\
Matt @ Apr 20th 2009 2:33PM
Seriously? Because the only people I hear saying stupid shit like that are people like you, who seem to be oddly fixated on hating Apple. Even in this post you just can't resist it, and there isn't even one mention of Apple.
Go away troll.
Schweppes @ Apr 20th 2009 3:51PM
Wow, it only took 3 posts to get one of you lick-the-shit-from -the-bottom-of -S.J. boots to come to Apple`s defense...
Matt you new name is shit licker!
AHAHAH!!!!
OneLove @ Apr 20th 2009 3:52PM

I'm still having static issues with my Voyager 520 + BB Storm combo.
Let's hope it's fixed in the Pro model.
Chad @ Apr 20th 2009 2:36PM
Well of course you hear static. It's the lightning from the Storm.
really....I couldn't resist.

Is there a Bluetooth headset...or a phone for that matter, that says the name of the person calling?
So you can actually take a call without having to look at the screen?
Golferal @ Apr 20th 2009 2:49PM
Windows Mobile has a feature to announce the name of the person (if they're in you contact list" or the phone number over BT. I used to use it but it can get annoying after awhile.
Sony used to make (don;t know if they still do) a BT headset with a small LCD on it with caller ID, but obviously you can't look that the screen if the thing is in your ear. Not sure if anyone actually found this useful or not...

I'm sure S60 Nokia Phones can do, I think my N95 did, before it started ringing.

My LG VX8700 announces the incoming caller name if it's in your phone book then it rings. You have to turn the option on though it's rather buried in the menus.

I like the 650e. I just wish they'd improve on that without adding "audio IQ" I'll give up the noise compression technology as I don't want to sound like an old school cylon when I call my clients (unless I'm demanding payment).
wayne @ Apr 20th 2009 2:50PM
I got a hold of this on Friday and after a weekend's worth of use am very impressed so far. In my limited use (worst case has been mostly driving at highway speeds - 70+ mph) the sound quality is excellent on both ends and the noise cancellation works very well. I haven't had a chance to test the windscreen though to see how much wind it keeps away from the mic.
I've purchased and used a number of high-end BT headsets (most recently the Jawbone 2.0 and Discovery 925) and the Voyager Pro is by the far the best in terms of both inbound and outbound sound quality.
MikeK @ Apr 20th 2009 2:55PM
My last Plantronics was great except for wind noise and ambient noise. My Jawbone 2 is great at those, but won't stay in my @#%& ear. Perhaps this one will be the best of both.
ErikC @ Apr 20th 2009 3:22PM
It looks great...boom mic's just make sense. Just not fashion sense.
Le Big Mac @ Apr 20th 2009 9:08PM
True . . . but I'm not sure even the smallest, sleekest headset looks too good on anyone. Unless it's Jennifer Garner hanging upside down while battling SD-6.
Keegan.comstock @ Apr 20th 2009 4:35PM
Our bestbuy store has had them on the shelves for like 5 days now...
Guru @ Apr 20th 2009 6:05PM
Has anyone bought this?
MikeWard1701 @ Apr 20th 2009 6:16PM
I Prefer my Voyager 855.
LongshotX @ Apr 20th 2009 7:32PM
Oh okay.
FILA @ Apr 20th 2009 8:35PM

Me? Hell no, Never
Le Big Mac @ Apr 20th 2009 9:09PM
But people still wear FILA?
Ric0chet @ Apr 21st 2009 1:02AM
Bought one today at Best Buy. Based on admittedly limited testing, I'm impressed. I did some testing while I had my car stereo on louder than I would if I was having a conversation with someone in the car with me, and virtually none of the music came through on the call. When I turned it down to a more reasonable level, none of the music came through. It seemed to have a bit of difficulty with my A/C on full-bore, but that was it. Voice quality and volume are solid, and the multipoint works very smoothly.
Since I use my earpiece for a lot of business calls, I'm more concerned about sound quality than anything. Yes, this is a bit bigger than some headsets, but I still think it looks pretty slick, and I'd certainly rather have this hanging off my ear than a 925.
Laura @ Apr 21st 2009 10:23PM
I also purchased one today at Best Buy, and at the Plantronics price point. I agree completely with Ric0chet's comments earlier today, although, as noted, based on limited testing of one day. Heh.
cortez @ Apr 22nd 2009 8:50PM
been testing for 2 days with good results. used for approximately 15 calls during past 2 days and no complaints from folks on the other end. i'm using mine with an HTC Touch HD and i'd prefer slightly louder earpiece volume. with most HTC phones, you can tweak what's called an audiopara.csv file to manipulate sound quality/volume. will test for another week before i decide to keep or return.
