Samsung: OLED screens on half of mobile phones within 5 years
Truthfully, we wouldn't put too much stock in that headline considering that Samsung Mobile Display, a company that makes its ends off of selling active-matrix OLEDs, is the source. But on the other hand, we can definitely see it coming to fruition. According to a new report, said outfit has stated that OLED screens of some sort will be on over half of all mobile phones (not just smartphones, mind you) within the next five years, and that these same power-sipping displays will be on 20 percent of digital cameras and 30 percent of portable game players (PSP2, anyone?) within the same window of time. While it may seem a bit far-fetched now, we actually have good reason to believe that OLED adoption will indeed skyrocket on the small scale; it's those big screen TVs that we're worried only our grandchildren will truly enjoy.

I won't live that long.
Can I have your stuff?
But I don't want any of your crap Apple products or MONSTER CABLES... they both are overpriced and suck a55!
ill gladly take all his "crap" Apple stuff..Monster stuff too, im sure i can sell it back easily..
I have only 1 apple product (nano) and the only monster cable I have is in my pants. :) (You want it?)
Oh... oh no you didn't. :o
it would be nice to have them on most things..
Yeah, I'm with you there.
I'm too lazy to RTFA, but do they mean half of ALL mobile phones, as in, including the ones more than five years old that are still kicking around, or do they mean half of all mobile phones offered for sale, new? Five years is a LONG time for electronics. I was just hearing about the Motorola V600 this time in 2004...
^^^Good question.
However, I'd be surprised if OLED screens aren't on 90% of new mobile phones sold in 2014 (and beyond), so I assumed that the 50% stated in the article referred to all the mobile phones in ownership.
I'll wait for the iphone OLED model.
And I know I'm gonna get downranked for saying that, but, the truth is, Apple has tied iphone owners hands behind their backs. Every single song and app we purchased from App Store/iTunes is already synched to our computers and whether we buy a new iphone or ipod touch, we can only upgrade to a new apple made device in order to access our content we invested in. Therefore, I simply doubt that these changes in the cellular market will even be considered by iPhone owners. We will upgrade - but, only in the iPhone line.
Well, Apple has make his job ! you're chained with this fruit !!
That's precisely why i don't buy into Apple, they tie you into your content not because it's more convenient (there are more convenient and cheaper/free services out there) but so you don't go off and buy a competitors product and are forced into buying their own hardware with inflated prices.
I voted you down for several reasons...
1) You brought Apple and iPhone into the discussion that didn't have it. I love my iPhone and Mac but I don't need interject into every Engadget topic.
2) You audio can be moved to any other device you wish. Video is DRMed without an included method for removal and apps are tied to the device's OS and display. Expecting these mobile apps to run on other devices doesn't make sense and sense other smartphone makers have their own app stores (or carriers that sell apps for handsets) the situation is the same for any smartphone owner who has invested substantially in 3rd-party apps. If a handset comes out that suits my needs better I'll gladly buy a few new apps again. We even do it for PCs within the same OS after there have significant updates to the app.
3) These changes will be considered by iPhone owners. Getting an instant-on OLED screen with a higher resolution and lower power usage is an important thing. Though the results of power saving OLED over LCD currently aren't significant on such a small display at this point.
Apple slaves take heart, there are devs out there working to free you from DRM with conversion apps. Add to this the hopefully inevitable shift toward truly DRM-free content on iTunes and you may well be able to break the chains. Of course if you just like Apple's stuff, then you will be down-ranked forever on Engadget, but that's your call.
And with that, Quantumphysics unwittingly stumbles upon the reason half the sentient tech population will never voluntarily chain themselves to Jobso the Hutt.
Bold. Very very booooold.
i still use my oled blessed samsung k5... headphone jack is broken, but with it's slider-speaker design, i end up using it as much as my iphone
too bad samsung omnia (on verizon, which will be my next phone soon) doesnt come in oled flavor

Why 5 years. We can do it in 5 months. I hate how companies like to move at such a slow pace when it comes to tech.
Hmm. Let's look at cellphones and computers from 5 years ago. Look again today; you may want to reevaluate your expectations of technological progress. Do you expect warp drive by tonight?
OLED is not new tech and has been used for yearrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrs now.
Most cellphones come with useless outdated tech..and a nice premium price;)
Phuh damn flippin colors!
Back in my day, we had black and white, the Nokia 1100 was all we had.
Back in my time we...
Uuuuhhhh i think i have my false teeth upside-down.....
(Falls asleep drooling...)
Bah. If the super optimistic view is 50% within 5 years, the reality will probably suck even more. I want new tech, nao!
The displays are not power sipping.
I'm currently on a workgroup at a company and we're looking to use an OLED instead of an LCD in our next product. The problem is it uses a truckload of power. If you have more than 30% of the pixels on it actually uses more power than an LCD with an LED backlight. Plus, they burn in.
It is a lot brighter than an LCD though, especially the colors.
I think if you wound the brightness down on the OLED to comparible levels to your backlit LCD you'd find OLED using less power.
Anybody knows the name of the samsung phone that is shown in the pic
isn't that an Omnia HD?
That's the ultratouch. Also known as the tocco ultra edition currently available in europe.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/16/samsung-ultratouch-hands-on/
oh right. Oops on my part
That phone in the picture is very iphone-like.
how so?
just because it's a phone, doesnt mean it's a iphone clone
the icon grid is nothing new, and was in blackberry pearl for years (i dont know about phones before that, but pearl had it for sure)
touch screen was also there, namely the prada phone from lg, and samsung p2 had touch screen just to name a few
cameras on the phone - been there for nearly six, seven years.
ability to download apps? vcast's been there for a very long time.
music on phone - also been there for a very, very long time
so again, tell me. how does the phone in picture, or any phone for that matter resemble the iphone. cuz to me, iphone looks like just any other phone in the market
oh, if your apple brainwashed feeble mind cant comprehend, let me put it this way:
the original, british version of the office doesnt resemble the american version just because the american one is more "popular"
He didn't say it is a clone, he said it is "iphone-like".
And yeah, the British version of the Office does resemble the American version. That's how it works when two things are similar. Each is similar to the other.
Sarcasm much? I was making fun of engadget for all their iphone-like posts of late(lenovo ophone, verizon hub2, chevy dashboard thingy(don't remember what it's called but it's actually based off surface). They seem to think everything in the world is iphone-like. Interesting being called an apple fanboy though...
How much energy does OLEDs save compared to traditional LCDs in cell phones?
None. As I said above, it actually takes more power. If you make your UI white on black and sparse, you could probably break even overall as long as you don't show any user content, like icons, pictures or movies. These tend to have too many lit pixels.
I hope you realise Darren that to have grandchildren you do actually have to have sex with a real woman at some stage in your life.........
I'd be happy if it was on just ONE item in the next 5 minutes... put the damn screen on teh Omnia HD and ship the f*&*ing phone already. Who cares what you want to do in 5 years... if you don't get that damn phone out, you may not be around in 5 years. :D
test
