Touchscreen calligraphy tablet concept gives linguists hope
Ah, now this is the spirit. Rather than concocting yet another handheld tablet that's good for nothing more than checking email and wowing onlookers, designers Soonkyu Jang, Chung Lee and Yonghuk Yim have come together to put linguists on the front burner once again. This here touchscreen concept is a calligraphy board that enables you to practice your stroke without ruining reams of paper and blasting through countless bottles of ink. Initially, at least, the board would only come loaded with teaching tools for the Korean language, but you know Leapfrog could hook this thing up with Lithuanian, Maltese and Slovak should it ever get involved.

Verrry nice, I'd get that!
Very cunning. I'm sure the linguists will be thrilled.
Dang. Beat me to "cunning" by two minutes...
Cunning and graphic indeed.
Thats pretty cool. I really have a soft spot for calligraphy after I learned the basics in high school.
It'll be good once multi-touchscreens have a high enough resolution and sensitivity to use a REAL brush without ink, and draw where the brush bristles touch.
can it do Khat? It's one of the most complex calligraphy in the world.

“An Arabic letter is beautiful on its own, and when it is turned into khat, there is another level of beauty. You don’t have to be a Muslim or an Arabic expert to enjoy the art. Picasso saw the khat of a master calligrapher and cried: ‘This is art!’
no
there was article that i read awhile ago that art is forbidden in islam... t/f?
there's an iphone app that already does this for the chinese written language. it's called iChinese, and is very well done
My wife is a linguist (yes, a cunning one, sometimes) and she is constantly annoyed (as am I) at the misattributions the public at large give to the field. I assure you, this device may be helpful to someone out there, but not linguists, who are interested in the technical artifacts of spoken language, not written. That is the domain of - I don't know, scribes?
I think the word is "calligraphers."
I believe the word you are looking for is "writists". Or "writerers".
You're thinking of "fellaters"
Is it waterproof? Just in case you need to wash the whiteout off it when your blonde girlfriend uses it.
By "linguist," don't you mean "calligrapher" or "calligraphist"? A linguist studies languages, not necessarily Asian calligraphy, which is an extremely sophisticated art form in and of itself.
It's good to know that Chung Lee is doing more than just Street Fighting these days.
Maybe you'll be able to write with your feet?
I’m not sure the linguists would be arsed.

At least they didn't say linguicist ;-) That would be even more insulting!
Um, how are calligraphy and linguistics related (other than highly tangentially)?
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means, what you think it means."
Now maybe if someone made a tablet with built in IPA keyboard....
Maltese?
Being one of the 400,000 Maltese citizens in the world, I'd like to put up a warning notice for anyone interested in getting this to Learn Maltese on it.
Get a life, learn something more worthwhile! Like English, Spanish or French!
Thanks!
But Slovak? Preco Nie?!
To the commenters who corrected the author's sloppy usage, thank you! The authors usually correct themselves when they make a technical error; I hope he corrects this entry. To the Maltese citizen who does not think his language and inherently, culture, worth learning or that those who choose to study it have no life, I disagree.
