Acer says it'll "likely" have one Android phone this year

We've already heard plenty of talk that Acer would be rolling out one or more Android phones this year, but it looks like the company's head of mobile phone products, Aymar de Lencquesaing, has now come out and made the clearest statement yet on the matter, saying that while Acer has "not made any formal announcement of an Android-based device," it is "likely that we'll have one in 2009." No more details beyond that, unfortunately, but there has been some speculation that Acer's first Android phone would be known as the A1, which may or may not be similar to the mysterious C1 touchscreen phone pictured above, and could land as soon as September. In related news, Acer has also reaffirmed its commitment to become one of the top five handset makers by 2012, adding that it would need to sell 20 to 25 million devices a year to meet that goal.

LOL!!!! The Android OS will go the way of the Betamax. I love my iphone and you'll never see me give it up for these crapgadgets reviewed on engadget these days. Where did all the Apple love go engadget?!?!? Give me my iphone news!
Look 5 posts down..
Morons are not listened to so go away.
You forgot to say first.
You give iPhone people a bad name...
Come on, Engadget has plenty of iPhone news, and the iPhone isn't the only game in town.
Posted from an iPhone 3G, my a Mac and general apple fan.
... but it's an acer
ok well i will "likely" buy it when it comes out
How about this, its "likely" that who ever can just make a decent full touch screen phone with android and better specs than the G1 will make a pile of money, so whats the hold up?
I'm going to.. go out on a limb and predict these crash and burn by 2012 instead of the latter case..
Repeat after me:
Hardware Keyboard.
again:
Hardware Keyboard.
one more time:
Hardware Keyboard.
Without a hardware keyboard it's just a less competent iPhone. Give me the physical, tactile input mechanism and I will be there. The only thing keeping me from getting a G1 is they don't do 3G on AT&T's network.
You sir are much, MUCH wiser than I was 5 months ago. I brought a G1 over to AT&T (because EDGE on the iPhone at the time wasn't all that bad) and sincerely regret it today. EDGE is continually getting slower and slower and the device is becoming less functional because of it. So slow in fact that I'm switching carriers.
If you're thinking about bring a G1 to AT&T, DONT'T! Wait until an 850/1900 version comes out... or this Acer phone.
come on dont say release it damm it ..all these company saying android phone this year we are in the half of 09 and the only adroid phone is the g1 on t mobile
I thought this was supposed to be "the year of Android"! I've got an unlocked G1 and am excited for other phones to come out, but I will admit this thing feels very incomplete. I'm hoping other manufacturers step up to the plate, and soon.
I'm not going to hold my breath for Android in 2009 anymore, and will more than likely switch to Sprint for the Pre when released. Google, go faster! Here's hoping for Christmas 2010!
wake me up when a competent android phone is ACTUALLY CONFIRMED. I'm so fed up of these statements.everyone says they're doing an android phone, yet no one has actually come forth except for HTC, that said g1 lacks tons of stuff.
...what's so amazing about Android again? It's open source-ish? Yeah, that really helps when there's really only one phone on the market that uses it.
Seriously, there's no way I'd buy an Android phone if it doesn't bring something else to the table that other Phone OS like Windows Mobile can't do.
iPhone OS = available on pretty much one phone, the iPhone
Android OS = available on pretty much one phone, the G1
For all the uproar about Android, they really need to pick up the pace and actually release some damn phones that use the OS.
"If/maybe/when/might/prototypes". None of that crap matters to consumers when there's practically NO OPTIONS available.
I'm not saying Windows Mobile is awesome, but from what I've read, I do think it might be the most compatible/functional. I also think that the next couple generations of top end hardware (beyond the ones that were shown this year at CES) will finally start reaching the point where there's VERY little graphical slowdown on smartphones running WM (I was going to buy an Xperia X1, but then I saw the lag in it's transitioning on video and decided to hold off on buying a high end phone until one or two more generations passed).
Just saying, right now, all the noise about Android is getting really ridiculous when they're not putting out any hardware products to go with it.
Yeah I was there too... thinking about an X1. I just read too much/saw too much to make me think that i would regret it. I wanted to go WM, but felt that it was not yet there.
Ended up getting a new BB Cruve in January, still think its great. When friends ask me what Smartphone to buy now i tell them to wait a year if they can. If they can't get a new Curve.
Android is not there yet.
Just tethered my G1 to my laptop over the USB cable today at lunch using PDAnet from June Fabrics. (yes, I pay for the extra data capability through Tmo to allow tethering)
That's something you can't do with an iPhone unless you "jailbreak" it.
BTW, I have a used iPhone for sale. It's one of the original ones. Turned out it was cheaper to get a G1 and break the AT&T contract than it was to upgrade to the iPhone 3G. There were initially some things I missed about the iPhone, but the main thing I missed was completely cured by YouMail.com. And GoogleVoice may eventually be even better than YouMail.
Although some of the programs I have for my G1 were not available through their official market, I didn't have to "jailbreak" my phone to install them from other sources. That's enough right there to keep me from going back to the iPhone, although I would be happier with Android if I could get better 3G coverage than Tmo gives.
