Maybe a little more, but the jump in performance is much, much greater than the difference in cost. Could however spend 250 on a previous generation and still get amazing performance.
@Damo Initially the intel motherboards were all expensive high end boards but that's not the case anymore. Admittedly not as cheap as an older AMD board is going to be, but if you're building a new system I doubt many people are going to buy an old AM2 socket board anyway-it wouldn't be very future-proof.

But then you have to pay a lot more for the motherboard too, The AMD stuff is cheaper across the board.

@tekd, am3 is backwards compatible w/ am2/+ so I can put any am3 cpu in my am2/+ mobo. What was that you said about future proof?
