Eizo's FlexScan EV2023W / EV2303W LCD monitors turn off when humans are away
Not that we haven't seen LCD monitors get less demanding when it comes to energy, but we've yet to see a company take eco-friendliness this far. Professional LCD maker Eizo has just announced a new pair of panels (the 20-inch FlexScan EV2023W-H and the 23-inch EV2303W-T) that boast a "human presence sensor." As the phrase implies, these displays are designed to shift to power saving mode when it realizes that its master has vacated the area, and when they return, it automatically flips back on in order to keep from being bashed by one of many USB-connected peripherals. Unfortunately, it seems the human detection timer can't be changed from 40 seconds, and no, there are no current plans to implement a robot presence sensor once the Apocalypse is realized.

What a swell idea that will probably not make it to major brands, you know, the ones we buy.
EIZO *is* a major brand - just not in the US. (And I'm not sure why - maybe their products are too high-end to sell well in the US.)
forgive his ignorance. He is a gamer and he never knows graphic.
Now thats a good idea
Or just turn the thing off? It still takes power to run the sensor.
250 mW vs 45W? and the winner for conservation is the sensor.
@me: read it wrong, now I'm an idiot... of course the power button is better, but who wants to do that? I'd gladly pay the $2/year for a sensor instead of wasting my precious time with buttons.
Sounds great until the sensor breaks and the monitor thinks there are never any humans nearby.
Or a magical wizard pops up and makes the thing radioactive and kills everybody in a 100 yards radius, so much to worry about eh
yes, because no sensors ever break/go dead. With most it's not that big of a deal and removes one feature, but with this the whole monitor is basically useless if the sensor dies.
Then I guess you'd just turn off the sensor. I'm sure it's in the menu.
But if the sensor doesn't work the screen won't turn on to access the menu...
Problem: how do you navigate through the menu when the monitor is off because the sensor thinks there are no humans around?
I am assuming it will be made to have a 'fail safe' state so if the sensor were to fail, it would not affect normal use of the monitor, it just won't shut off automatically.
The monitor probably still has a power button. Presumably the unit would turn on when pressed regardless of the sensor.
The humans are dead.....
Binary solo!
16:9, not gonna buy it.

...or do they?
Uses a small tiny tree that's monitored for falling-over noises with a sensitive microphone I'm told.
I wonder the same thing about the light in the fridge.
if you aren't there how do you know it's off. it might be a trick, like the tree falling in the forest
Place an intelligent gorilla there who knows how to sign and report what happened.
watch it with a camera!
IR or Sonar sensor... cheap as chips... wonder how much EIZO are bumping their already ludicris prices up by for this "feature"
Site linked says it uses a motion sensor that when nothing is detected for 40 seconds switches it off, so it uses IR differentials I guess, and is for fidgety types, that sit close to the screen.
sweet! This'll work as well as the sensored toilets that flush every time you lay the protective paper down... flushing it away before you sit.
Hear hear. Or even WHILE you sit, just cause it thinks its good for a laugh. Bar stewards.
. . . flush the protective paper off the seat? Water shouldn't be running over the seat. What kind of crazy ass toilets have you been using?
We had some Sony SDM LCD monitors that did that 10 years ago..... but if you had two of them hooked up the sensors seemed to mess with each other and they wouldn't turn off
Hey, this means robots can't use our computers.
It could be useful if the range isn't limited to right in front the computer, sometime i stand away from the computer doing other things while watching a video, reading some text.. whatever.
if the sensor dies, the standard 5-year-24h-warranty will bring a new monitor... you can´t compare eizo quality to other screen-brands
What if the sensor doesn't think I'm human enough?
Does this use LED backlight, because CCFL generally have shorter lifespans with on/off stress.
