Philips shows off Lumiblade OLED lighting concepts

As promised, Philips has now taken the wraps off its first few Lumiblade OLED lighting concepts which, judging from Philips' boasting, could well change your life and ours. Now on display at the Euroluce International Lighting Fair in Milan, the concepts are divided into consumer and professional groups, the former of which includes ceiling-mounted products like the one pictured above, as well as some slightly more straightforward desk lamps like the one pictured after the break. What's more, each lighting device also boasts at least some degree of interactivity, including the ability to recognize hand gestures or, in the case of the professional lighting fixtures, react to passers-by. Interestingly, however, none of the products are actually full-on OLED lamps, with each also supplemented by some LUXEON Power LEDs to provide some more usable lighting.

Couldn't just just remove the O, and used those?
That looks much more practical than a lightbulb.
yea, but srsly screw phillips. they make a thousand concepts every year and rarely ever sell anything on their own, and the stuff that other companies buy off of them is released 5 years too late and is overpriced.
I agree with you Mike. Philips hasn't done anything really revolutionary in the market since inventing the CD. I was just being sarcastic.
We're getting closer to the lightsaber, but this doesn't do yet.
Considering the fact that OLED's are more expensive than LED's, how about we drive the cost of the latter down first? Last time I checked a decent LED lightbulb was still $50. Can't imagine how much these things would be estimated to cost...
Costco, 3-pack $25. Prices are starting to drop. But they'd have to get to CCFL prices before I'll buy.
her clothing is very unappealing
Better than nothing though.... Right?
Looks more fitting for an amusement park or cheesy movie set than home lighting.
If they can be installed as panels in the ceiling, I could definitely see the appeal.

Each one of those squares is 72 Euros (not including the recommended cables and adapters).
I'd love to have that in my house :)
The lamp is nice too. (Sorry, had to).
"The lamp is nice too. (Sorry, had to)."
Yes, I think the lamp actually looks better than the ceiling-mounted abomination.
Oh, wait, I see what you did there! Har har!
Man Darren, ur frackkin awesome, that last phrase...
It is like we care about the thousand LCD product lines Sony has in the market, that 6 month lead time for another iteration of the same model that adds a functionality that should be there in the first place... those things that remind me of Apple a bit
It is like one a former attacker Samsung sells cheaper products of the same arguable quality (o man, another past JV!)
It is like you have been dethroned from portable players, it is like you have been dethroned from videogames, what to say about your media business that've put your electronics division to the ropes
We used to love you, but you are a dying elephant... those good ol' days in which everything of quality entering the house was Sony.
Does anybody feel the same?
Yep, back then it really WAS worth paying more for a Sony.
Now they're all the same. Although Sony's stuff isn't that much more expensive than others'.
@ Notung
You lost me after the second sentence.
Make that the first sentence.
If it's not foldable, it's breakable.
Am i the only one that noticed that the first pic is fatally flawed by the fact that you would walk into it breaking possible your face or the expensive light or even both.
I think 2 Live Crew said it best with, "No a$$ b*tch, no back stage pass...."
This looks far too much like lamps we have now. OLEDs need to look way more futuristic than this, comon now!
Does not look kid friendly.
Let me know when I can buy it in rolls large enough to cover my entire ceiling.
Great post! It was very well researched and I enjoyed it very much. I bookmarked your site and will be back very soon, I look forward to reading some interesting posts! Thanks, Whitney
LOL That shit is so UGLY
They look nice. Hopefully they will give off a better light than those CFL bulbs. I hate them
Weak fixture design! Should look to Sci-fi artist for inspiration, OLEDs are not flat fluorescents. Modular panels of various sizes would be great to mount on walls, ceilings and not necessarily flat and or square.
I can see a low power room lighting sub-system for homes possibly powered by solar and batteries. Catch sun by day, illuminate by night with stored energy. The lighting would be off the grid, I could stop yelling at the kids to turn the lights off when they leave the room.
The wireless crystal mouse reveals all.
