Ubuntu 9.04 'Jaunty Jackalope' is gold, ready for download
Sure, you can't pronounce Ubuntu, but the latest release is ready for download anyway. Ubuntu 9.04, aka Jaunty Jackalope, comes with the promise of faster boots, better power management, immediate system access after hibernation, a new system-wide notification service, and broader device support for intelligent switching between WiFi and 3G networks. 9.04 is available in desktop, server, and netbook builds. Right, netbooks, Linux distros run just fine on netbooks regardless of what Microsoft and analysts have to say.

NOTE: if you have an ATI card and it's not one of the latest cards, be prepared to go open source drivers and lose compiz.
Open-source ATI drivers work better than the proprietary ones on my computer (an old Inspiron 8600)
Last time I had an ATI card, the open source drivers supported Compiz
Is it just me, or is a Jackalope not a species of penguin?

I run linux mint on my netbook hope it gets an update soon too
Been runing the RC on my Mini9. So far it has been fantastic for mainly surfing the web and email.
It was the last piece of the puzzle for having all our home computers run linux. My wife wouldn't put up with anything that doesn't "just work" and I'm proud to say that so far she hasn't had any complaints.
Jaunty with the EXT4 filesystem flies on my PCs!!! So far, the best Ubuntu experience!!!!
Now it runs better on my laptop. 8.10 sucked in the laptop because it was very slow, but Jaunty is so smooth.
I'll be dowloading it today...but I'll be holding off on installing it.
I'm waiting for the Windows 7 RC so I can just reinstall my whole machine. (Win7 + Jaunty = Supercomputer)
I hear you dude. Can't wait for the Win Sev7n RC either. But to each computer, it's own OS: Sev7n on the lappie and Ubuntu on the netbook.
switch those arthur, I think you'll get a better experience with 7 on the netbook.
Ububtu is the best.
seed please and download from torrent you will save nibey to the Ubuntu team just let noobs D-load from thir server
wow there is mire then 1000 seeders and 2000 leachers thats the most i ever seen in a torrent ever
Let me know if my song "Invocation" is in the examples folder - I'm supposed to be official bloatware ;^)
Dude your song is part of the "bloatware" on the 9.04 :D
To all Aspire One owners, Ubuntu 9.04 desktop edition features Wifi (which is absolutely awesome), the SDHC Card reader and couldn't get the right card reader to work with xD cards, which is a little letdown.
Now I'm going to try out the UNR version.
Just installed in a VM in VirtualBox. Able to install Guest Additions with no problem at all. No Mouse issues. Good stuff....
Meh. Ubuntu is a very nice distro but it's over-hyped. There are other equally good (if not better) distros out there. I switched back to Fedora as my primary Linux OS after a few years because I found it better meets my needs (particularly w/regard to running 32-bit software in a 64-bit OS.
Ubuntu is for the masses, you aren't the masses. Simple enough.
The reason its hyped is because the masses are hyping it. more keyboards = more hype.
I was up @ 6am(got up for work) checked for about an hour got to work @ 8, did some work for about 30 minutes and I checked the website only to find that it had been released: I was like "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.." aka rage! Now I have to wait to get home to upgrade my RC version :(
Dude you should totally punch a coworker over this.
If someone steals my red stapler i'm going to burn down the building and go to the Caribbean
Nice job Ubuntu, GNU and Linux kernel ninjas. Now PC game developers just need to pull their heads out of their asses and port their games to Linux. They don't have to officially support all distors. Just pick the most popular one, i.e. Ubuntu. While Linux market share isn't huge, there are enough users to justify the porting costs and I think they'd be pleasantly surprised just how much official Linux support could pad their profit margins.
Here's hopin'. :)
I wish the game developers and graphic card makers would get together and support a Gaming Distro, with a simple tutorial for a dual boot installation. I would much rather play game s with significant resource requirements in their own sandbox.
UNR is pretty cool but there is still a LOT of work to do. As it is supposed to be a "netbook" edition, it doesn't feel like it was done with netbooks in mind. Desktop effects are pretty lousy (on my basic Aspire One) and, at least for now, .deb files can't be opened the way it used to be and updating is a pain (fails to fech on local servers).
However, this is in the works so it's understandable that it is a pain in the butt right now.
Ubuntu Netbook Remix uses *more RAM* and has *more services running* than stock desktop Ubuntu or XUbuntu - it actually runs *slower* on most netbooks.
If you want something that's faster and saves your battery, and you've got an Atom check out MID Edition for LPIA - Phoronix claim a 10% improvement on battery life, and there's definitely a 20%+ improvement on idle RAM usage. Sadly the MID launcher UI they've made is really awkward to use on a non-touchscreen :/
Here is a quick review of Ubuntu Jaunty:

i really like linux. i used windows up until about two months ago, but i constantly had to fix it. finally a friend told me to try puppy linux on a livecd usb, and i liked it. one day xp was really pissing me off and i just said fuck you, windows. i'm going linux. so far the only problem i've come across is i still can't figure out how to install from source code. i tried using the instructions in the tarballs, and online tutorials, but they never work and i can't figure out how to make them. but i'm going off to college soon, so i can find someone to actually show me. i plan on dual booting ubuntu and windows xp on my tablet for college, with shared files for media and homework.
