Lazarus be praised! The last time we heard about ASUS'
P565 was back in February, when we mourned its
sad and supposed demise. Turns out that's not the case, as we've now got a hands-on with the GPS / PDA phone from Polish site
ASUSPDA, who claims (at least via machine translation) that it's been on sale for several months. The plethora of product / unboxing / interface pics look mighty legit, and as for the impressions, the reviewer seems very quite fond of it. Compliments are given for its general performance and design, though he does note the Glide interface isn't as seamless as you'd expect with a 816MHz processor inside. If you're interested in finding out for yourself, it looks like you can order the GSM / WCDMA-enabled device from
Qbit for around $566.

Should be running android...
Great Specs, terrible software
YES IT RUNS SYMBIAN 40!
A phone interface should be seamless at 816 mhz - my NC10 is seamless at 800mhz (stepped) - sloppy coding.
OMG! Engadget was not the first to find out about this totally awesome whizz bang new phone's release?!?!?! I feel empty not being able to read the witty banter of some self-satisying techie kid who smears the internet with their own personal mantra on how its cool to be a "geek". I might collapse not being able to fulfill my life with the quirky retorts, tongue-and-stupid third person banter, or super duper awesome podcasts. Damn engadget....where have you been? Oh yeah, I remember, discussing the finer points of your wikipedia professorship as you sip cafe mocha at your local non-starbucks. You just hate those high prices and how someone there called you an emo kid....
I haven't looked at this one in particular, but the smoothness of a phone's interface has more to do with if it is hardware accelerated by on onboard graphics accelerator or SIMD/DSP unit than the primary processor core.
Also, I'm not sure about the relative performance, but this 800mhz processor is NOT a ARM Cortex (or ARM11), it's a newer version of Marvell's Xscale which uses a really old version of the ARM instruction set.
Wonder if it comes with 34000 apps?
I seriously doubt any engadgeters will drop $566 on this being that they voted iPhone smartphone of the year again,. They just bluffing ,y'all ain't pulling the trigger my n,
The phone has serious dead space (aka large bezel) issues.....
Reminds me of my old Dell Axim x50v, with a slightly faster processor, smaller screen and bigger bezel. Meh.
Is there anything interesting in it other than 800mhz CPU?
No, just the CPU.
This phone should have made it to market like 6 months ago. With all the major CPU manufacturers (for mobile devices) revving up to release their long overdue line of faster energy sipping processors later this year, it feels like this Asus offering is too little too late.
In summary: Save your money for a Tegra or Snapdragon platform =P
