Canon Rebel T1i trickling out to stores
Sure, the Nikon D5000 might have gotten itself a ship date today, but Canon's Rebel T1i is doing one better and actually turning up in stores a couple weeks ahead of its scheduled mid-May debut. This particular specimen was spotted at Bromfield Camera in Boston, but we'd love to hear if you've seen this guy pop up elsewhere -- let us know!

Nice i cant wait to get my hand on one
The 80's can't wait to get their hands on that box. too late!
Its the american design... the Kiss package here in japan is really nice. A lot more pro.

and here the nice ads, not really cool on poster but at TV it was nice, the kids are all singing a KISS song... yeaaaaah!

That poster ad freaks me out just a little...
"Kiss" is just so incredibly Japanese. Couldn't really work anywhere else...
bunch of stores in toronto have it, but are running out of the 40d.
Go to your room, T1i! You're grounded for a month!!
The American name for this camera line sucks. Why is this the Rebel ? :)
I don't know why it's called the Rebel, but I used to have one of the film versions, and I still remember the commercials with Andre Agassi.
I can't be the only consumer that is insecure enough to be embarrassed by that name not to get the entry-level Canon? At least they can change the logo.
At least we're not in Japan. My Rebel XTi is known there as the "Kiss Digital X." To me, it implies it's marketed toward schoolgirls in seira-fuku and, by shooting with one, I'm just as hardcore.
With a Rebel's yell, she cried more! more! more!
Tradition. The name has held since 1990.
True... Kiss isn't better either. It might even be a worse name than Pentax *istDL2. Fortunately, in Germany the Rebel T1i is just called EOS 500D. Now that's a proper name for a camera.
Want.
Doh! I live in Boston and bought two of these off of E-Bay earlier today because I didn't think they would be in stores any time soon :(. Oh well, I guess I have to be patient and wait...
anyone in japan seen the gh1?

Nice font, looks like some kid designed it :)
That's how all of the Rebel line packaging looks. The "Rebel" logo that is...
Nah, the market this product is aimed at is not very interested in visual appeal, I guess.
The box design does seem rather silly to be frank - I'm not sure why a more plain image of the camera and Model no clearly printed wouldn't have done - certainly in the UK no shops have the boxes out (for cameras), you ask for what you want and they go out back to fetch it- seems a wasted (poor) effort.
17th Street Photo in New York City got them in today.
Actually, the D5000 didn't ship today, I work at Best Buy and we actually put ours on display today, I got to test it out when I worked this morning.
I'm definitely excited about the t1i though, I'm not sure if or when my store will be getting those, as we don't have a huge camera section.
Talk about the lamest packaging ever...
I will never buy another canon product.
I had an S2IS, cost me $500 when i got it.
A few weeks after the warranty was up, it got the black screen of death, all pictures came out black. Only took about 100 pictures with it.
Did a little internet research, turns out, it's extremely common, almost an epidemic.
Canon wanted $160+shipping to fix it.
May not sound like alot, but it's a 1 year old electronic device, so right off the bat the price was down to 50% because of how fast electronics evolve, then you have the fact that all people into such a camera knew of this issue by then.
Basically meaning it had no ebay value.
They should of fixed it for me. A good company that cares about their customers would of.
You only shot 100 in one year? perhaps that's the reason it broke. If you want a camera to hold it's value, buy pro (1D, 5D)
on a forum: "The S2's problem is a stuck shutter."
I've owned over a dozen Canons over the last decade or so and almost entirely problem free despite repeated and constant abuse from me. I've frozen them, dunked them, dropped them, forgot them in a car in Vegas in the summer, etc. and yet they keep on firing away for thousands of frames without any hiccups.
Sorry to hear about your problem, but I don't think that you can extrapolate that issue to all their products. They are complex machines and hopefully Canon can learn from your issue and prevent it in future models.
When is the hack coming for the Rebel XTi to shoot video?
Which to choose: this or the 50D? I could care less about the video on this one.
Buy this body only, and get a decent lens, like the 17-55 f2.8. Glass is always the way to go.
I work in the electronics section at Wal Mart in Warsaw NY, and if I'm not mistaken then we've had this in the store for a few weeks now. Of course it could be an older model, but I'm 100% positive its some kind of Canon Rebel.
theres rebel XSi, thats probably what you saw
Yeah, you can see a lot of them on ebay, they have been available on ebay for about a week if I am right. Ebay sellers got them before hand of Amazons and others looks like.
Why do you lie to us Engadget? You couldn't give two bits whether or not we've seen the T1i elsewhere. Vainglorious attempts are made at blogic famedom and are consigned to languish forever in /#comments.
The D5000 did ship, if you take a look at that thread you can see my unboxing photos.
I just purchased one tonight at Nebraska Furniture Mart in KC, Kansas for $864.00 + tax. They now have 11 in stock. They don't even have them on the display floor yet or on their website. Happy Hunting...
Nice package design *smirk*
Yesterday at ABT electronics on the northside of chicago, had the T1i. A demo unit is also out so to get hands on with.
Most Philadelphia Best Buys got the D5000 in a couple days ago. No sign of the T1i though.
I had one preordered from Amazon. Got an email today saying it would be here around June 25th. I canceled my order and called OneCall (an amazon partner). They had 100 in stock and they were going fast. They're shipping it on Monday with free shipping. Should be here next week!
I was going to buy a 5D Mark II until I saw the ISO performance of the T1i. Now I'm getting the latter and spending the extra $2k on an L telephoto. Thank you canon!
The box looks like it came out of Honest Eddie's Discount Emporium.
Perhaps Canon may re-think the branding and packaging in future, if they care about perception. Maybe stuff like this sells in the US, I don't know. Good thing they make some decent products.
I purchased a T1i at Robert's Distributors in Indianapolis on April 24th. It was the start of their Spring Expo and Canon expedited a few to them for the event. I don't know how many they had. Kits only, no bodies separately. The rep said bodies only boxes had not made it to the US yet
They are now widely available as both body and kits in the UK, which susprises me, thought the US would of had stock first!
Not cheap... about £615 or $900 body only..... mind you at least its called a 500d and not quite so 80's!!
Just called 1-800-OK-CANON and the sales rep told me the anticipated public release is May 4th, 2009.
