Samsung is back in the money, but a whole lot less than last year

Hot on the heels of Apple announcing it's officially ripping this recession a new one and making more money than ever (hooray!), Samsung has released its financials for the first quarter and things are a little more, erm, glum. (Boo?) The company has at least partially recovered from its first ever loss in the fourth quarter of last year, making a tidy $459 million so far in 2009. That's the good news. The bad news, however, is that $459 million is 72 percent less than the company pocketed in the same quarter in 2008. But, profit is profit, and a 36 percent increase in revenue from the company's cellphone division is also promising -- especially given Nokia's recent bad news. Must be thanks to all those Omnia fanboys and girls.

I don´t think, that Samsung and Nokia are actually comparable! Nokia is dependent on only 1 branch whereas Samsung has a lot more divisions..

Yeah, Samsung also makes laptops, TVs and as i have heard, even some cars.

And they are about to release the Omnia HD (i8910) that looks like an awesome phone. I might buy it instead of the Nokia N97.

Ugh.. the Omnia. My girlfriend contemplated getting one since she wants a smartphone. I promptly let out a Revenge of the Sith-esque "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" I love WinMo but that's not the way to do it, Sammy. Your other WinMo phones are the titties in comparison.

I bought an Omnia and was broadly happy with it. However, I ended up getting a 5800 instead as the lack of a 3.5mm jack became just too annoying.

I have to admit that you have to change a few things on the i910 Omnia to make it great.

Slide to Unlock 2
-and the gold nugget: WiFi tethering!
(There's even more stuff you can do if you want to dig into the registry.)

Now that I've changed a couple of things (how nice is it to have that ability?) this thing is the coolest phone I've ever owned.

Samsung will be fine.

Yeah I guess we shouldn't have to do tweaks.. but that's almost the nature of a WinMo user, though. Most of us are fairly satisfied with our devices, but how it started for me was back with my Apache; I was like hmm.. I don't like this little thing, I wonder if I google it, I could find a way to change it. And it was like FLOODGATES man. I couldn't believe all the things you could do to these WinMo phones (patience and slight tech skill withstanding, lol). Whenever I get a new WM device the FIRST thing I do is check XDA and PPCG for anything I find useful.

This is actually a surprisingly good turnaround for Samsung, I didn't expect them to suddenly make a profit after that horrible last quarter. Their products seem to still fly off the shelves, their tv's and phones are as popular as ever. Nice job Samsung, now lets get those OLED displays released now that you got some breathing room in the market to work with!

Sammy makes a hell lot more than Apple could ever accomplish in the last 30 years. I don't think the comparison is justifiable. \

Samsung does almost everything: ship parts, satellite components, automobile components, consumer electronic components, etc. In fact Apple uses memory chips from Sammy for their pocket devices.

Maybe part of the problem is that prices for phones are so outrageous unless you buy one as part of a new contract. I'd love to upgrade to a newer Samsung phone but I'm not eligible to do so until August 2010! And I'll be damned if I'll pay $300 for a phone.
