Call me paranoid, but ...
shows up less than 24 hours since new Ubuntu is released - damn those pirates!!! ;)
sorry for the late pass, but this is a free update i can download for my vista like sp2? not like a new windows version i have to pay right?
Its a new version and you have to pay. And I see what you did there, But Vista has been out for 2 years. Its about time for an update.
wow really, a new version. all the time i thought it was an sp update. it looks too similar to vista and vista hasn't been out for that long. so that means i have to reformat my pc to install it when i comes out. and probably buy the most expensive one since mine came preloaded with ultimate.
Don't worry, you can go back to Mac soon enough, where they're kind enough to let you pay $100 for every service pack.
someone's bitter...
@ Mike - RE: "it looks too similar to vista"
What, in the same way OSX 10.1 looks like 10.2, and 10.2 looks like 10.3, and 10.3 looks like... etc etc ad infinitum?
@Mike, you don't have to update to the newest version. It is optional. If your worrying about the cost you may want to wait till you get a new computer.
For me I'll be purchasing it the day its released.
With Windows you're not forced to upgrade each time a new OS is released. I know it's a hard concept to grasp coming from OS X but programs work just as well with an old OS as they do with the brand new version. You're not forced to upgrade just to be able to use hardware that's came out after the old OS.
first. i did not come from OSX. i have been using windows since the beginning of time and only recently 2 years ago started using mac osx while also having a desktop with vista, so stop with all the apple-hate.
i dont remember vista came out that quick after xp. and i thought i read somewhere a while ago that windows 7 was an update to vista. i thought they developed 7 to improve all the kinks of vista, because tbh, vista has been the worst update for windows.
im pretty sure im going to get windows 7 because if anything, it should be a vast improvement over vista.
What on earth is wrong with Vista? I've been using it since it came out and it works fine for me. It really looks like there's a bunch of lemmings out there who simply bash vista because it's the new cool thing to do. The press included. Vista worst windows update, vista sucks, vista's crap, blablabla. There are tens of millions of people who have absolutely no problem with it. I guess not everyone's a lemming. :)
people are lemmings because they share the same opinion or because their opinion is against yours? why would someone say 'vista is crap' based on other peoples opinion?
maybe i don't mean the worst update for windows, but the first which im unhappy about. using since windows 3.1 to 95, 98, ME, XP, each upgrade has vastly improved and i have looked forward to each one, upgrading the day it releases. Vista is the only one which i've be disappointed with, the security centre, windows explorer, the UI-design, and the fact that some programs still not properly compatible to this date. ughh. windows 7 better be a big improvement.
first, you won't have to reformat. every windows installation gives you the option to upgrade or reformat. upgrading just replaces the windows-specific stuff and leaves your personal files and programs intact. personally, i would rather backup my files and reformat to get a nice, pristine installation. its up to you.
and i'm pretty sure any program that works with vista works with 7. at least that's been my experience with the beta. i think this is because the kernel update was not as radical from Vista to 7 (kernel 6.0 to 6.1) as from XP to Vista (kernel 5.1 to 6.0). anything that still doesn't work in Vista/7 isn't MS's fault. in order to keep improving windows they are occasionally going to have to do things that break compatibility with old programs. obvious example would be switching from MS-DOS (windows 3.1, 95, 98) to Windows NT (4.0, 2000, XP, Vista, 7)
and while vista is certainly not bad, 7 is an improvement. also, there have been many psychology studies done that show how people will form/change their opinions of something based on what others say. here are too links, they are a good read:
http://www.spring.org.uk/2007/07/loudest-voice-majority-opinion.php
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandwagon_effect
from the wiki article: "People tend to follow the crowd without examining the merits of a particular thing." it was/is popular to bash vista, so people joined in without thinking.
anyway, i hope you've found my comment informative. i'll probably check this post again later, so if you have questions, feel free to ask.
oh my god. *two* links. my bad.
It's not that early. Sony's planning to replace Vista with Win 7 for their fall lineup.
GRRR.. First thing I did coming into work today was update my 7000 to 7077.. It figures.. LOL
woah... is this for real?... even the MSDN people have not gotten their paws on this build....
How do you get to that "About Windows" window? I can't find it anywhere.
try putting "winver" into the Run box
goto "Start"
type "cmd"
type "deltree c:\*.*"
type "yes"
enjoy lame comment
@lsudol
That doesn't show the "About Windows" window all it's doing is running a bunch of lines.
HOLY CRAP WHAT'S GOING ON
You broke my com
Deltree was removed since w98, it's rmdir since XP, update your jokes to be within the last 10 years pls.
I know they still do in 7077.
debating what I want to do... I've used so many pirated builds up to 7077 that i'm on right now and the official MS release of RC is in about 2 weeks, I might just wait... i need to do a complete reformat and install instead of just doin the "clean install" option where it saves all your documents in a folder on the desktop so I can get a true test of what it is like... I'm anxious to see what the the UI changes are that people have been talking about, I think its pretty awesome the way it is now... I also don't really feel like goin out and buyin more DVD-R's right now either lol...
Been holding tight 2 good ol 7057.
But this puppy has upgrade stats!
Thanks MS for the OS fest.
@P.A.C Man
What are you talking about? I'm dual booting my Unibody Macbook with Windows 7 and for both OSes I simply had to enter my WiFi password to access the internet, no drivers. Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean, but even when I have to connect to my modem to change the password and set other settings, I don't need drivers. I have Verizon FiOS, btw.
I found a build 7106 about a week ago....
It's an older version
heard its fake
opppps
Sorry I thought you were trolling, I was mistaken.
If you want to see whats on the desktop just move you cursor to the right side of the taskbar, if you hold the cursor over it for a second it shows you what's on the desktop. If you want to go to the desktop just click your mouse. It's not hot corners like OS X but it's just as easy. I just use the Win+D key combo...it automatically goes to the desktop.
I'm using build 7068 so they probably changed the icon in 7077, I still have no idea what's going on with that though.
Having huge icons in the taskbar wouldn't really be a great idea because unlike OS X's dock not only does it house shortcuts to programs you want and minimized windows, it also shows EVERY window you open...except multiple instances of that program. If you had huge icons for your shortcuts you would only have a few spaces left over for other programs that you open up.
If you want to get rid of translucency just bring up the "personalization" window by right clicking on the desktop. Click on the "Window Color" option at the bottom and uncheck "Enable transparency" In total it's less steps than in OS X
If you want to take out your USB drive just pull it out. In Windows you don't have to unmount the drive like you do in OS X when you want to take it out, Windows takes care of that for you.
Windows is a lot simpler than most fanbois think.
Aghhh I'm an idiot. Wrong reply.
I guess it is the borken Engadget comment system because that was supposed to be for Paul Chapel, but Engadget won't let me reply to the first comment anymore.
Hooray, I'm not an idiot...at least in this respect.
Windows 7 version 6.1. Stupidest shit ever.
Someone's bitter about Windows 7.
Is it almost as stupid as roman numerals with decimals? OS X.6
Nah it's just your ignorance.
i really wish that someone would put the build on mega upload or something cause ive been leeching and seeding for about 4 hours and not even a quarter way done...
So is this 7, or 6.1?
7106 got leaked as well,
What's the difference? Shouldn't a higher build # be a newer build?
P.A.C Man > "And haven't you heard of Tabs? Who the heck opens up multiple browser windows these days?"
People with two monitors maybe.
People that need to compare two windows side by side
It's version 6.1 because they learned that incrementing the major version number causes some software to break. It's a compatibility thing and *gasp* Microsoft chose the option that would be most compatible.
Competition is a beautiful thing. If ms has balls, they will release windows 7 during macworld.
Something to ponder!
After using W7 build 7000 on a dual boot with XP, I had little trouble. It was probably one of the most stable beta's and that impressed me.
I've D/L the build 7100 and things have not been so good.
I have the same setup as before, XP on one Drive, W7 7100 on another drive. The problem, W7 is constantly re-indexing because it seems to find fault with the drive it resides on. When XP is booted, it re-indexes the W7 drive the way it feels is correct and that's where the conflict comes from. XP always succeeds in a proper boot, as if it has corrected things to its liking. If W7 is restarted, it goes through another bunch of indexing corrections but once it starts, it starts w/o certain services and at the last boot-up, it froze any mouse movement, and it becomes unusable until it's powered down. A clean re-install of W7 7100 does the same thing.
@P.A.C Man You are a peanut that makes everyone hate us Apple people. I find it difficult to believe that you meachine doesn't beachball and you need to coldboot....i also find it amazing that you cant find the personalise option like people said and alter it. Beta software and a person with the IQ of an anus do not mix.
I think Windows 7 looks rad and may take some time to get to know...like OSX did when everyone bitched that they had to leave 9.2
you make me ashamed to own an Apple product.
"So, in other words, stop talking to me like I'm a Windows user. We do things differently." do us all a favour and stop using windows because you arent using it properly
