Keepin' it real fake, part CCII: meticulous G1 clone forgets the keyboard, a reason for being
We were already scratching our heads over the SciPhone Dream G2+, which went to all the trouble of ripping off Android for little apparent reason -- most of the OS is free for the taking. Well, things just got weirder with the new "G1 Quad band GSM Google Android Style Touch Screen Mobile phone." The handset not only has a fake version of Android, but also mimics the G1's looks pretty extensively -- ironic for a phone that was a bit long in the design tooth by the time it hit the market, despite its adorability factor. The fake G1 also lacks a slide-out keyboard, and we're having trouble making out the trackball -- it might be fake as well. We suppose a 3.5mm headphone jack would be a bit much to ask for?

I love how these fake android devices don't even use android.
One day we will have orbital laser cannons and we'll be able to incinerate KIRF factories and everyone in them...
Could this run real Android?
bet it has an onscreen keyboard..... hmm
if you could hack it and get it to run android, that would be awesome.
@ Quantumphysics
the originals and fakes are often made in the same factories in China.
maybe because android have not enough quality/features even for fake manufacturers. this fact that they make fake stuffs does not mean they dont look at what the hell is that os they uses for their product
Happyface you look like you've hit a nerve with arash over here :)
looks better than the real android
yeah,do you see? a simple version of linux is very easy to clone. whats weird is this engadget hyping system for android
@ Arash
Gee I wonder why engadget even talks about Android? Could it be that Android is actually pretty good and probably the most promising mobile OS out currently? With even its current feature set and more on the way, more and more companies realize Androids potential and power and are making products from phones to netbooks to set-top boxes, all of which are gadgets that I thought this site is supposed to talk about? Ignorant people mock what they don't know, have you even used an Android device?
whats the best site to get kirf phones from? I wanna test some of these out.
www.totobay.com
this one might be the same as in the article above:
http://www.totobay.com/g1-quad-band-single-sim-card-phone-with-bluetooth-black-p8624.html
Ok, I went and looked at that site (www.totobay.com) and now I need to know: What the hell is "double bluetooth", and why would I want it?
one of the best clone looking phones(why no keyboard??) ..about the os well nice try
Ah, history's repeating. Remember the good old days of cheap Japanese copies ? Well, take modern-day Japanese high-tech and multiply it with 1000 ... that's China in 8 years.
the japanese did some very funny things back in their copy days, (like making a city named usa so it would say made in USA japan with usa in very large letters) but i think they at least licensed the technology,
but back when japanese were making cheap copies, it was done by companies like sony. they then put that money into r&d. there was also sense of patriotism in buying products made by them. with china, it's a different story. there's no one company doing it - since they're done illegally. thus there's no r&d effort, so there wont be a real market seizure possible. not everyone will buy those really innovative iphomes
so no. china wont be japan in 8 years.
Loving the fake android. Kudos to Engadget for committing to KIRF news, I can't figure out which is faster Chinese mobile manufacturers cranking out KIRFS or Engadget's coverage on them.
yes they even do something that google have too many employees on it and done it in 3 years in less than an hour: making another crappy version of linux for mobile just like what android is
"...I can't figure out which is faster Chinese mobile manufacturers cranking out KIRFS or Engadget's coverage on them."
Presumably the manufacturers are faster, given that otherwise Engadget would run out of things to cover at some point :P
the funny thing is that it probably DOES have a 3.5mm headphone jack...
this is the one phone that i wanted windows mobile to be on
Is it going to hurt Android's reputation?
The only Android news I wish to see is that Samsung/Sprint is back on for Q2. Sigh...so depressing.
Oh yeah, and this is silly garbage, obvs.
That's one of the better looking clones around.
At our local weekend computer market there's a guy selling Chinese phones. Fake iPhones, fake nokias, cool things with built in TVs. All Dual SIM jobbies.
I think I want one. Some fun features to play with, no hassles with being locked to a phone company.
If I can get one with Win Mobile on it, then that will make me happy. A phone with Android would be fantastic, but failing that...
I know what you mean - I think I want one too, for the dual sims more than anything - though I have this inkling i'm going to get burnt somehow (not literally - although may well be a possibility too.)
photoshop
Heh. The G1 box in those pics shows a real G1 on it. Notice the real trackball?
Why did they bother censoring out the T-Mobile logo in most of these shots?
You know what is even funnier, the idiots would have to pay someone to make the firmware look like Android. I would say the Chinese engineers are only familiar with a set firmware stack thus making Android work with their sub par cpu would be a hassle.
honest question?
since android is open source how hard would it be to make your own phone and jam your sim card into it like people make their own computers?
m2h that's awesome! but man it sounds rather expensive... with all those accessories costs to be considered too...
i wonder if there's any way to get our current devices like hp ipaq's to run android..
@Ragetek - Give it another 6 months and i'm sure there will be a lot more porting of android - I'm quite surprised its taken this long, although I know for sure its possible given enough work for all the big players (i.e. iphone, nokia S60 phones etc - any generalization that has enough of a following.).
@m2h Forget the (OpenMoko) Neo Freerunner, it's a piece of crap. I can't speak to the other two as I haven't used them, but I have used the FreeRunner and I think it would be hard to design a worse phone if you tried.
Example: the small, recessed, resistive touch screen is pretty much impossible to use without a stylus. But there's no slot on the phone to carry a stylus in...
Now this is what I call a KIRF, it looks almost exactly the same. At first glance you would think it is. Even used the same box.
Is it possible to download android from anywhere?
It's the thought that counts....
Who buys these things?
who builds these things? i mean casing, OS etc. is that so simple?
it is only android theme , but use MTK platform .
