Toshiba's 10-inch Dynabook UX netbook gets hands-on treatment
Toshiba's Dynabook UX (or NB200, if you prefer) just popped on our radar last week, and already we're seeing netbook craving individuals in Japan get their paws on 'em. The 10-inch machine ain't too different than the other alternatives out there -- save for the N280 processor, which will never show its true potential without a GN40 chipset riding shotgun. At any rate, early impressions of the machine have been rather positive, with onlookers digging the design and the chiclet-style keyboard. Personally, we're a bit bored from afar, but hit the read link to have a look and make a judgment of your own.

Looks good, a decent keyboard for a netbook is always nice.
Wow... the 80's live again... I thought chicklet keyboards went out after the IBM PCjr but now they are all vogue again. Forget Sony or Apple... look at the early Sinclairs, Tandys, etc. I think this Toshiba looks like it would fit in right about 1982.
Nice looking keyboard.
would be interessting to see if the chiclet keyboard is as crappy as it is in the asus 1000he. It is all wobbly. Asus should check their products for quality better before they ship them out.
My keyboard on my 1000HE isn't wobbly. It's one of the best keyboards I've ever used. These new chiclet keyboards aren't like the old ones on the PC Jrs.
This just in ASUS DOESN'T
I bought a 900HA and almost 2 weeks in the touchpad was jumpy and the keyboard started to fuck up.
I returned that shit so fast.
ASUS is still learning and the build quality aint there yet. YET IS the key word
Can't wait for netbooks with the gn40 chipset
Woooow, Looks pretty nice. I'd get one if it had just a tad bit more juice in graphics.
Yeah toss one of those new Ions in there and I'd be a big fan.
Wow! What a MacBook ripoff! It's all silver with a black bezel (I mean it even has the name under the screen!) And let's not get started about the keyboard!
douche
Wow, this laptop has a keyboard, it must be a MacBook rip-off.
come on guys, he's being sarcastic.
It's obviously a Sony Vaio rip-off.
You guys just try too hard....
i don't get why fools like saying the keyboard is an Apple design. The keyboard has been on some sony laptop long time ago. But no one ever says Apple copied sony. Maybe its just a trend now
Wow. This just proves my point that almost all of you guys fail at sarcasm.
this shows that you fail at humor.
Text always fails at sarcasm. I think it's the lack of vocal inflection. You may want to add a /sarcasm or *sarcasm* at the end next time.
Shame chiplet keyboards have been around since, hmm 1981 on Z80 based hand helds.
Yeah, as Richard says... this isn't new by Apple or Sony.
Where do you guys think netbooks are going? I mean, what do we want to see on netbooks in the future. Is it just faster speeds? Cleaner designs or what?
It's a good question. I wouldn't personally buy one until it fit more than one niche. Something of an Ion based netbook/convertible tablet would be awesome. I don't have a tablet, I don't have a netbook, and I'd want enough juice to play HD movies on it.
Cheers to the chicklet keyboard.
Chiclet keys lose.
Chici chici
Nice keyboard. Pain to remove I guess.
I like the keyboard, chiclets are WAY better than any other keyboard type, and will soon be the de facto standard.
Good to see some progress with the grunt of netbooks - users are appreciating these models to the point where they would like a touch more power.
Hate the stripes and fugly brown crap - like Asus, Toshiba seem to have a very confused idea of style, taste and class, hence these pseudo-exec efforts that should never have made it past the drawing board. Who likes this hideous 'styling'?
Finally, it's too bezelicious. They have to start filling the lid with screen. You could easy get an 11" in there, amybe even 12 with a tweak, so why not do it?
I don't want to hear any nonsense arguing any of my points whatsoever, if you don't like it, go to Gizmodo.
I've always thought the same thing about the screens. They could be a bit bigger.
However, I like the striped lid; there's also a white model besides the brown. It's better than what HP does with some of their notebooks, like on the dv2, there are those random circle/swirly things on the palm rest. I don't mind patterns as long as they're uniform throughout, but if there's a random design in the corner then it just bothers the heck out of me.
1. I'll argue your points all day. Gizmodo sucks and you can't make me do anything.
2. Some people like things you don't.
3. Bigger screen = bigger price. First and foremost I like my netbooks cheap. Everyone seems to have forgotten that CHEAP was the first reason to make or buy a netbook.
4. Then again, what do I know, I'm typing this from a 1st gen Asus Eee with the 7" screen and could get a far better netbook today for what I paid for this thing.
5. Which means I'm just about in the market for a new one.
6. Think I'm gonna go with a Dell.
What's this new fashion with having computer keyboards look/feel like calculators. What's that all about? It may be cheaper to manufacture since it doesn't have any springs or mechanisms, it's just one rubber pad hitting the board below it. But, it just doesn't feel right.
Its called evolution pal. Chiclet = superior technology, not inferior. More expensive to make (for now), not less. More accurate to use. Get with the program, for your own sake, and for the sake of those around you. Every minute counts.
I don't like the way they made all the keys smaller to make room for a better looking keyboard. That said, the extra space between the keys is nice.
I believe keys,
like women should have curves,
not chiclet style flat.
Other than the keyboard this Toshiba looks quite nice.
Lovely design. Especially the keyboard. But I don't like the location of the camera.
Very coold design. The keyboard looks like a large version of the Sony Ericsson Experia X1, very nice. Good that the battery is not sticking out the back like on the previous NB100 model.
Im going to touch you in your sleep, get the facts at www.nightfondle.com
p.s. i really hope that is not a real website.
Am I the only one who feels like price is the only differentiating factor now (because they're all the same!)
Engadget, just tell us the most important piece of information. I'm sure we can piece together the rest of what makes these netbooks tick
I just want one that has 1024x768 native res. ( and preferably a better chipset than GMA45 )
If I designed a notebook I'd put a speaker behind the screen and a mic behind the trackpad, then engadget would think it was a phone and be very enthusiastic and it would get a good writeup :)
@Oli D,
Tried it. Not a real website.
No, power won't go out of style, but the point of these netbooks isn't power.
And you fucking spammers need to get a life. Go advertise your shitty website somewhere that people might care. Oh wow, you bought a domain. Congratufuckinglations.
Uh...that posters website was a joke...
lol, If I could make a netbook, I would make it so that it would have a 11.5" screen, dual speakers at the sides like the NC120, a multi-touch trackpad, fit the biggest chiclet keyboard I could, and get a hi-res screen similar to the one on the hp mini 2140 and 2133. Oh and a z550
you realise the Z series is slower per Mhz right? I think they also include the sucky GMA 500 (the chip is great ...the driver suck bad)
In Europe this netbook is called NB200 and make his debut in Hamburg at april 22.
