Canon confirms line defect on G10, denies existence of fourth-dimensional UFOs
Streaky lines on your G10 photos? Don't call MUFON, hit up your local Canon repair center. The company is acknowledging an issue that results in small, horizontal defects like that pictured above. Apparently such aberrations seem to appear at random, regardless of camera settings, but the affected units' serial numbers are at least easy to pick out at the read link. Not exactly good news for Canon, hot on the heels of the 50D vertical banding fix, but at least it isn't attempting some sort of cover-up.
Update: LimeyHoya commented to let us know Canon USA has posted up the same notice, meaning you can now figure out if you're affected without having to ponder any abstract Google Translate koans.

But at the resolution it pumps out, who's gonna notice?
Just kidding, I'd be pretty peeved if I saw this in a zoom in during a Photoshop session.
worse if you saw it at the print :\
A defect is a defect... do not side with the munny grubbing companies please...
I bet an Apple fanboy like you exchanged your iPhone 3g 10 times because of 1 dead pixel in the corner or a little crack near the headphone jack..
Yea.. who is gonna notice.. JACK!
Nice reading comprehension Schweppes.
That's actually an entry into hueco mundo.
I wonder how many people actually got that reference.
"bleach" is more popular than you think, playa.
Yeah, I always use Clorox to bring out the best in my whites. Hell, don't let me forget its superior germ-killing abilities for kitchen counters and bathrooms. Consider me a bleach fanboy.
breach‽
Nice one! Look out for Grimjow!
So iam not the only kid that reads engagdet..
Rods. RODS. RODS!
My first G10 had this problem and I noticed it right away. A solid 1 pixel black line in exactly the same place as this sample. You don't need to be at full resolution view to see it. I exchanged it and have so far, have not noticed it the replacement.
Quality control at Canon seems to be slipping of late...
If you zoom in farther on the lines, you'll notice they are text and read "All you bases are belong to us."
Meme misspelling fail.
We are all in four dimensions, in case you didn't notice. Otherwise, there'd be no time. Doh!
Hmmm looks like it is from the 8th dimension! BANZAI!!!!!
good to see Canon proactive on repairing this
OK, that translated web page confuses me. What was it saying about the battery cover? My G10's serial number is on that list.
Here's the same info on Canon's USA website:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=222&modelid=17624&keycode=2112&id=57370
Awesome, thank you! No markings on my battery cover, looks like I've got some photos to comb through. =(
I hope I don't come off as rude but cameras have never really been my thing. I think I've seen Engadget post a way to exclude certain stories from your the feed but I forget how. I've looked around on the website (FAQ, etc.) but haven't seen anything. Anyone able to help me out? Thanks. :-)
Strange lines in CANON pictures eh, probably an error in the algorithm that embeds what camera made a picture (and yes canon is known to play such games, and no I don't mean EXIF I mean the 'invisible' codes they also embed in laserprinter printouts)
.
Kudos to Canon for admitting there is a problem and issuing a recall.
Canon Did it AGAINN...?
buy NIKON then
