Cablevision loves you, will offer $99 101Mbps uncapped internet service
It's been a rough week or so for Big Cable, but it looks like the East Coast's Cablevision's decided to play things a little differently than Comcast and Time Warner: it's just announced that uncapped 101Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 service will be rolling out on May 11 across its entire service area. The best part? It'll cost $99 a month, making it faster and cheaper than any other high-speed package we can think of -- 50Mbps service from Comcast and Verizon is around $140. Not bad at all -- let's hope the competition picks up on it.

Remember that's 101Mbps advertised and 10Mbps actual speed.
Brian Recchia @ May 6th 2009 8:42PM
Actually, Cablevision's really good with providing their advertised speeds. I have their 10 Mbps service at home and I actually get that speed (and I've even gotten faster, before) via bittorrent downloads, and at my dad's shop he has their 15 Mbps service and gets that speed, too. Upload speeds live up to the ads, as well. Now of course this is much higher than 10-15 Mbps, but I'll place my money on them actually living up to it; they're a very good ISP.

Comcast and Verizon will probably just ignore it and continue to cap and charge through the nose.
reuthermonkey1 @ Apr 28th 2009 1:05PM
probably. Cablevision is very limited in size, so if the competition responds, it will certainly be localized.
BigD145 @ Apr 28th 2009 2:20PM
Cablevision will only need a little time to beef up its coffers and begin to expand. The competition should not ignore it.
Bizam! @ Apr 28th 2009 3:51PM
Verizon isn't going to ignore it in NY State, they're fighting hard with Cablevision now, they need every advantage they can get.
Nilscon @ Apr 28th 2009 1:04PM
lol half of sweden gets 100mbit for about 10$/month
Go Sweden!
Eric @ Apr 28th 2009 1:12PM
They pay far more than that, it's just taken via taxes. Thinking otherwise just shows how successful their leaders have been.
giedrys @ Apr 28th 2009 1:24PM
Really?! So 100mbps in Sweden costs less than one pint of beer in the bar. Good for you!
Mike_NYC @ Apr 28th 2009 1:25PM
just curious. $10 krona for 100mps? or $10USD? the current exchange rate is such that 1USD will get you roughly 8Krona.
Swede @ Apr 28th 2009 3:43PM
In response to the doubters, 100/100mbit is 249 SEK a month from an independent supplier. Many pay far less than that. The term "unlimited" is never used, nobody would sign up with a ISP that limits your bandwidth.
mirakutea @ Apr 28th 2009 5:17PM
Oh they would sign up if all ISPs co-ordinated to limit bandwidth like in other countries.
Swede @ Apr 28th 2009 6:09PM
Of course ISP:s forming a cartel like that that would be illegal in more ways than one.
Josh @ Apr 28th 2009 1:03PM
cablevision is awesome, but their tv is a bit shoddy, still an all around win
dan2600 @ Apr 28th 2009 1:50PM
I have cable vision now...the HD looks great...but at the expense of the SD channels looking like utter crap.
If they just got rid of the 50 bazillion HD movie channels that only show crap, and the HD international channels that no one watches, we would have a bit more bandwidth to share.
i think i pay 60 for 10Mbps now...an extra 30 for 90 more bits per second.... thats like only .0000001(cents) per extra bit per month!
Frankenstein Black @ Apr 28th 2009 2:16PM
@dan2600
You hit it on the nose (too many useless HD movie channels showing the same crap over and over). This is an awesome move by Cablevision. Now if they would only FIX THIS:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/01/15/cablevision-announces-voom-hd-replacement-channels-theyre-all/
Dump the useless movie repeating HD channels and bring back VOOOOOOM!
(Which still exists and broadcasting in other countries and YOU OWN IT.
http://www.rainbow-media.com/about.jsp
So why did you kill what is clearly a competitive advantage? You know, totally unique non premium HD content? We are owed a REAL explanation not the line that the CSR's vomit up when we call. In the new internet age when a google search is 2 seconds away it makes you look bad and the CSRs sound stupid. SO WHAT IS THE REAL REASON THAT VOOM WENT AWAY!!!
PS Again, good job on the DOCSIS 3 / 101Mbps / $99 (hopefully not a "teaser rate" ;^)...

Jeez, we really need to step up our broadband game here in the U.S, its even more pathetic that many ISPs are resorting to strict bandwidth caps, Time Warner...........
Enigma207 @ Apr 28th 2009 1:06PM
Cablevision has always been my favorite IP too bad i moved to a different area and am now forced to go with Time Warner and their slow internet.....
Tore @ Apr 28th 2009 1:07PM
Move to Sweden and you'll get it for half of that huge chunk of cash.
brian @ Apr 28th 2009 1:34PM
ya, thanks anyway, but i think i'll stay in the US and just pay the extra $50.
unzarjones @ Apr 28th 2009 1:53PM
Will I have to piss sitting down?
matt @ Apr 28th 2009 2:59PM
Yeah and Sweden also has something like twice the income tax of the US - i think I'll spend the extra $50 and keep the thousands more I'll be saving on taxes, thanks
Patriks7 @ Apr 28th 2009 2:49PM

i would only get them for this internet service, anything else from them is shitty.
str1f3 @ Apr 28th 2009 1:25PM
I disagree. They don't even cap their basic package. I have their boost package and get 30 down and 5 up. The TV quality is good but isn't as good as Verizon. But then again I know somebody has FIOS and they're not happy with it. For an extra $3/month I get a DVR. The telephone is rated the best. Because they're in competition with FIOS her I get better plans.
Most people in this country, if not the world, would kill for my bandwidth.
majortom1981 @ Apr 28th 2009 1:31PM
I also disagree. I have cablevision. Where else can you get free area wide wifi and are able to host your own web server and email server with the ports opened up on cablevisions end?
HD is also free. They have also been working on improving their hd quality.

I was stuck with dialup until August 2008, and now I'm paying $40 a month for 1.5Mb down, 400Kb up. And it's riddled with errors. Constant disconnects and lag on Xbox LIVE.
Malikye @ Apr 28th 2009 1:46PM
Timerider,
do you use DSL? i use verizon DSL. most disconnect problems are from the wireless router/modem that they give you. if you get your own DSL modem, i read that it's much better with less disconects. i just ordered a new wireless router/modem from newegg.com for 80 bucks. be here this week. hopefully, this will stop those annoying disconects.
Timerider @ Apr 28th 2009 4:48PM
Yeah I have DSL. The only broadband provider in the area is TDS. We even had them install a new phone jack to shorten the distance between the phone box and the modem. They said that the modem is probably fine since it's relatively new. I kinda gave up on it after calling the guy out here 3 times and never really solving anything.
CapnShiner @ Apr 29th 2009 5:43AM
Most connectivity issues with DSL are caused by the ISP allowing people to sign up who actually live too far away from the CO to a decent signal. The modems that they give you are always piles of crap, so I won't rule that out as a possible cause for the problem, but it's probably just a weak signal from living too far away. If 3 technicians have been to your home I am assuming they have ruled out wiring issues, so if getting a better modem doesn't help then you're screwed. They won't acknowledge a problem on their end unless a large group of customers gets organized and effects their bottom line or hell freezes over. I feel sorry for people living in rural areas with no cable internet. I hope WiMax and LTE can fix that.
Robert Harrold @ Apr 28th 2009 1:09PM
sounds good but is there a usage cap? 101mb/s but you can only use 100gb in a month...
I skimmed the article did anyone catch the upload speed on that plan?
