Samsung Eternity retrofitted within NES controller, has never looked better
Not that we've never had the pleasure of seeing an NES phone mod before, but there's just something especially elegant about this one. The not-at-all-ancient Samsung a867 Eternity was chosen by one Taylor Merrill to be shoved inside of a now-defunct Nintendo Entertainment System controller. The result, naturally, is what you see above -- er, half of it, anyway. For a look at the whole thing in its entirety, hop on past the break and mash play. Per usual, we take no responsibility for damage dealt to your retro game consoles, existing handsets or pride should you attempt to replicate.

Nice work!
I'm disappointed. The NES controller buttons are non-functional. Let see this turned into something that allows you to use the NES controls to play a game on the phone. I'm thinking some kind of hinge to flip out the phone to see the screen while pressing the NES controller buttons. Either that or make it control an external gaming device via bluetooth. Something like that.
Too bad the screen is on the other side.. kinda hard to use the pad then huh Capn Nub...
schweppy, you're a grade A moron (since we're throwing around Simpsons lingo).
You must have missed the part about hinges. You know, things that swing? Like your mom on Fridays?
Wow, Jar-Jar you finally cleaned the poop from your feet?
Can't have everything, man.
Thanks, jar jar.
@strider: :-( What's next? Are you going to tell me Santa isn't real?
So.... the controller does absolutely nothing except make you look like a dorkus malorkus? Latin(door-cuss::Ma;loor-cuss)
what a Nub...
yeah... he cut a hole in a plastic controller and popped a phone in there. this isn't even a mod; it's an accessory. how come the guys who do this shit always look creepy (0:23 sec).
The eternity sucks, my gf has one its pretty much for people who are too cheap for an iphone. If you don't get the data plan with the eternity you can't do anything.
ew,eff you excuuuuse me! not everyone can afford the iphone.
it's really not that bad.
Do you have to remove the phone from the controller housing to get to the charge port and whatnot? I don't think I'd consider this a "mod" whatsoever, and moreso just a case. Nice try, trickster.
The phone looks to be pretty securely embedded in there, and it looks like there is a small slot for access to the charging port on the side (you can see it when he picks the phone up)
Why does everyone have to hate? It's pretty sweet, and better than anything that most of the haters have ever created.
not really, archaic. one time, i built something out of Legos, and it served no purpose... much like a gutted NES controller holding a perfectly good cellphone.
Anyone know when the TouchWiz update will come out for this?
So... this qualifies as a mod because they took a phone - unmodified - and stuck in in the back of a NES controller?
Lame.
Yeah... cant wait to tell the kids bagging my groceries that they all qualify as "modders" now.
It shouldn't qualify as a real mod, it's simply a casing. That said, it's still sexy and i wouldn't mind having one :)
hmmmm.. putting my entrepreneur hat on, if you're willing to buy this crazyness, maybe i should have someone print those vinyl phones skins made for the back of phones and mp3 players and makes some that just LOOK like an NES controller, so you can still play "pretend" but not have the charging/docking/headphone ports blocked.... [gets out calculator to compute financial gains on old skool nostalgia buyers paying for a piece of vinyl...]
also, the only thing this guy won is some unwarranted attention on engadget.... im sure he printed the web page and framed it..
Thats great and all, but now its impossible to use all the buttons and the camera...
Hey this is Taylor. If you go to youtube and search NES phone Nintendo, you will find a video of my phone. I didn't just plop a phone in here, I took apart the back of the phone and had to adjust some antenna plates to get reception. I also had to destroy the controller to make it work and I did some reconstruction with Bondo body filler. There is a charging port, but I wanted a clean look with nothing on the sides or the back for buttons or a camera. One of my prior NES phones had all that stuff and it ruined the look of the controller. This is my 3rd and best mod and I have been making them for years. Don't criticize unless you have done better. I spend my time doing cool stuff like this, not going a message board to hunt for people to talk sh!t on. Thanks for the interest everyone!

That is pretty solid work! You guys definitely embrace the hate. I feel bad for your mothers.
This guy is from my neck of the woods. Way to go, Engadget! It's about time Lancaster, PA got some spotlight in the tech world! (check his MySpace and he gets a call from a 717 number in the video)
"i spend my time doing cool stuff like this"....?
was that sarcasm? O_o
That guy wasn't that awesome
Cool but too bad the video was shot in a cave with one small candle as the primary light source.
wow, thats so amazing.
He cut a hole in a nintendo controller and stuck a phone in there... Apparently engadget is hurting for news..
