Video: Android 1.5 'Cupcake' on-screen keyboard and camcorder action
Released into the developer wilds yesterday, Cupcake (Android 1.5) is already making its video debut on an Android Dev Phone. Arsen goes through some of the main new features including the camcorder (with YouTube sharing feature), new on-screen keyboard required for Android devices like the HTC Magic and Samsung I7500, and enhanced Web browser. 3GP videos captured by the G1 were a bit choppy with dropped frames and weak audio but on par with what we'd expect. The on-screen keyboard and enhanced browser fared far better with Google providing real-time suggestions during URL lookups and the browser itself feeling a bit snappier when zooming and scrolling. All-in-all the latest build seems more stable than previous iterations and leaves us itching for the May release. See for yourself after the break.

cant wait for this to come.. then i can stop updating my phone ever few days from the
sapphire-port-dream website..
That guy is breathing hard and using um a lot.
Decent internet connection: ~$50/month
Watching 'Cupcake' Video on Engadget: ~10 minutes of your time
Making a comment that in no way contributes to the conversation: Priceless.
There are some things money can't buy. For everything else there's YOU'RE A TOOL.
Good thing you mentioned that, I would have missed it.
Video quality probably leaves something to be desired, but it was a cryin' shame that the G1 had nothing of the sorts at release.
hope android system could be installed in a net book like Eeepc
I have CUPCAKE running on my iphone
Been running ADP1.5 since yesterday evening, and it's hugely improved over 1.0 and 1.1. Much more responsive and my battery is holding up much better too, surprisingly. ChompSMS doesn't work, but those holding off for the official release are in for a wonderful time!
Just installed, stereo bluetooth (A2DP) works, doesn't look like they have gui support for 802.1x yet...
The video recording:
- Quality is equivalent to a 2003 Nokia.
- Shouln't be on a different application than "Camera".
Camera:
- Improved yet still laggy shutter.
- Can't swipe between photos??
Browser:
- The google suggestions as you type has been on Skyfire (Symbian and WM) more than a year ago.
- Extremely choppy zoom in and out, scrolling... compared to the phone that shall not be named. Disappointing.
Overall:
- No official multitouch is disappointing. Overall speed is disappointing.
Finally, I can only hope that Tegra (which I've seen to realtime rendering wonders with Opera) could take care of the lags and stale interface look... whenever that phone comes up.
1. Camera app = Camcorder app. You can be in the camera app and switch to camcorder mode by just changing the setting in menu.
2. The browser is actually quicker than my experiences with the iPhone now.
3. swipe between photos? what does that mean, and why is it important?
4. Multitouch. I have used the iphones multitouch and the G1 multitouch (hacked rom) and have yet to find it useful in any way. It's a gimmick. I'm glad the Android coders aren't wasting their time on that.
5. this video review sucks.
The video recording quality isn't too great but similar to a lot of other phones, while camera and camcorder are seperate in the menu, you can switch modes within either to the opposite, he did it in the video. You can open camcorder, hit a button and be in camera.
Camera:
The shutter is a little slow but you don't need to swipe between photos. That's something another phone chose to do, it's not a standard, the arrows aren't some broken way to navigate. They don't have to copy everything iPhone does.
Browser:
It's nice that Skyfire has been doing that, now the G1 does that. Skyfire also has flash and can play websites like Hulu and your iPhone, which you're using as a standard, can't. So, you can't have everything.
And I don't know what you're complaining about, the scrolling looked very smooth, even before the website was even loaded. On the iPhone you see that white and grey checkered grid when scrolling and then the page appears a second after the checkered grid, I didn't see that in this video. I'd say scrolling is better than the iPhone.
Overall:
Multitouch isn't a standard. You might as well say "no iPod is disappointing." The speed seemed great, I don't get why you'll excuse an app taking 5 to 10 seconds to open on the iPhone but you have a problem with the G1's speeds which were pretty good.
You seem very biased, and that's fine, it's just that a lot of your complaints seem unfounded or stem from you wanting this to be an iPhone. I understand the need to compete, but that's different than the need to steal methods and abilities.
whoa.... easy on me. I don't have or want an iPhone. I have been an Android enthhisiast eversince its announcement in november 07.
- Scrolling was choppy. Zooming in and out was choppy. It's definitely not as smooth as the Pre or the iPhone.
- Cam recording quality was terrible for a highend phone.
- Yes multitouch IS a gimmick (most people double tap instead of pinching) but it's almost paramount when your typing on a virtual keyboard, which is what Android 1.5 is all about.
Scrolling on the G1 browser is way better than iPhone. How is scrolling on an iPhone better when you see a checkerboard as you scroll the screen? Speed on G1 is much faster than iPhone, opening apps are quick and responsive, and almost instant (due to Androids ability to multitask). And I like the new cosmetic animations. Video recording on most phones aren't great, it wasn't a feature that sold me on the phone in the first place, but its nice to see a native app, opposed to iPhone where it has to be jailbroken to get some comparitively worse recording.
Overall iPhone is still better than this.
There needs to be a major update for this to even compete with apple.
Overall you dont know what you're talking about.
I got rid of my iPhone 3G after a week of disappointments and now it's more than 7 months that I happily use my touchHD and my Samsung Omnia.
I look forward to change at least one of them with a Nokia N97 or a new Toshiba TG01, or HTC superStar or Thoth, but surely this time I'm gonna stay away from Apple 's overpriced and underperforming gear.
Can you explain how so????
LOL @ Rapidshare!!!
Hey, there are legitimate uses.
Just this morning a new client linked me to a requirements doc they had shared on RS. Yeah, I thought it was weird too...
android has impressed me far more than the iPhone ever did!!!
i have been using a G1 for the past 2 weeks and never managed to crash it or make it miss a beat. website render just fine, and zooming / panning is flawless. the interface is far from stale and i cant wait to try this new update on my g1
Just installed it yesterday. I think its a little bit more "done" than the 1.1 version. The new animations are cool to have and the web browsing is a lot smoother. Video recording is still laggy (Especially in low light conditions) but is ok.
I don't think the Android Dev Phone has a "T-mobile" logo... That's a G1.
Nice catch!
he must have one of those whiney ass girlfriends... he checked his email eventually but he ignored the text the entire video
47 pics of android cupcake and french htc magic ;-)

I can't wait for this update but I've been playing around with haykuro's ports from the Magic and I will be severely disappointed if the soft tp number pad isn't on there for messaging and the dialer. It has been indispensable for the browser and quickly looking up contacts i want to call. Its one of the only things i really miss from my old WinMo phone.
The video reminds me of WinMo 5 on my tMobile Dash :-/ Growing pains for android :-/
WinMo 5? Did you even watch the video? Android (and most mobile OS) are so far ahead of Windows Mobile at this point. Microsoft really need to step up their game. I have the Dash, the Wing and the G1 and I can say that Android is far better than WinMo at this point.
I think most of the complaints about the performance stem from the hardware and not so much the software. Don't get me wrong, I love my G1 but its not as cutting edge on the specs as some phones out there. This update really is exciting in the long run and is a big inprovment for Android and future android phones and devices.
I agree with you, the phone is great, and with each release it will improve. I just love that google is still promising more and delivering (plus not charging for major updates). The only disappoints I have is the lack of headphone jack and battery life (I usually charge it with my laptop when on the run). So far my favorite game is Doom, it's a blast to play with the bb trackball!
I just loaded up theinquirer.net on my g1 running adp 1.5 and the scrolling is very smooth. Its not choppy at all.
I mean its slightly choppy when the page is loading, but once its finished, the scrolling is buttery smooth.
Anyone having trouble using their 3.5mm headphone adapter after installing cupcake? Mine coincidentally stopped working properly after I updated. It still allows the phone to charge but the sound plays out of the device speaker and not the speaker I have it plugged into. My adapter could have crapped out but I dont find it likely...
Same for me Arbor33, 3.5mm jack stops working with cupcake. I have a dev phone, so I'll see what I can find.
Hey Arbor, this is happening to me as well. It's one of those HTC adapters where you can plug at the same time 3.5mm headphones, the charger and the usb headphones: sound keeps going to the phone speaker. When I plug the normal (USB) headphones, though, it works as expected. Annoying.
