Motorola needed to release an Android set about six months ago, but we know these things take time -- and if it's any consolation, it sounds like the first fruits of the labor could be pretty awesome. Boy Genius Report now claims that the rumored landscape QWERTY slider
Calgary will be the first Android-powered Moto device to go commercial, though it's not clear when (or where) it'll hit shelves; given the device's seemingly unusual appearance and the possibility (foolish hope?) that they'll be infusing some customizations into the UI, they might just have an angle to attack offerings from
HTC and
others. That's not all for the Android department, though -- it looks like there might also be a
portrait QWERTY slider in the works for the third quarter codenamed "Ironman," pictured, which will pack 3G, WiFi, and some sort of high-res camera. In other words, a solidly high-end device. Bring it on, guys.
Moving on, it seems the lovely full touchscreen Flash has been canned, along with the
Krave's successor, the
Inferno -- possibly further confirmation that Moto's throwing virtually all its weight into the Android camp at this point. Finally, rumor has it that a device codenamed "Rolex" is in the labs -- and as you might've guessed, it uses the
Aura's astonishingly awesome ultra-high-res circular display. Odds are this is another luxury phone given its aspirational name and the screen being used, but a poor guy can dream.

You ain't got no alibi?
v3xx @ Apr 29th 2009 2:46PM
who designs this crap. i hope the president of moto reads sites like this.
NoPhoneForYou @ Apr 29th 2009 2:48PM
I agree... despair, not inspiration, is guiding MOTO's design.
Have you seen the Hint? It is almost like this one... really ugly... If you are going to design something break the paradigm somehow. Flies fall for honey, not Brussels Sprouts - well at least smart flies.
TareX @ Apr 29th 2009 2:49PM
+1 for the Portrait qwerty..... but -10 for the fugliness..

??? @ Apr 29th 2009 2:52PM
Let me get this straight...how many Android phones are out there right now? And how many have we seen/heard about that MIGHT be released?
And how does the ratio even make sense if it's higher than 1 to 6?
Rod @ Apr 29th 2009 2:55PM
oh dear.
oh very dear.
Only a mother could love that face.
European @ Apr 29th 2009 2:55PM

Guru @ Apr 29th 2009 2:55PM
will I be called apple fanboi if I believe this partnership will not make a dent in iPhone sales,?
Lazy Genius @ Apr 29th 2009 3:33PM
no but you will be a troll...
bringing up the iphone in this conversation is not only stupid but also places a troll target right on you back....
VanillaSpice @ Apr 29th 2009 10:49PM
But Lazy Genius, when other phones are mentioned as being "better" (in some way) that an iPhone, on an iPhone article, no-one calls those commentors trolls!
Surely it works both ways?
shravan @ Apr 29th 2009 2:56PM

Update your logo, moto.
Not that I'll care then...
Epsilon-Not @ Apr 29th 2009 3:21PM
What the heck is wrong with Motorola's logo? It's instantly recognizable, simple, and looks good. Certainly you could do a hell of a lot worse.
jonshipman @ Apr 29th 2009 3:14PM
would love an Android portrait slider. I hate landscape keyboards >:(
Andir3.0 @ Apr 29th 2009 3:21PM
You and I are in disagreement there.
Jake Paul @ Apr 29th 2009 3:18PM
Hey, an improved Samsung Propel.
darkmax @ Apr 29th 2009 3:21PM
Just out of curiosity but why do Americans love mobile phones with qwerty keyboards? Can't you guys just do what the rest of us do, with the keypad I mean?
agentstarke @ Apr 29th 2009 3:36PM
I'm pretty sure Americans aren't the only ones that like qwerty keypads
AJ in the East Bay @ Apr 29th 2009 3:36PM
I have faith in you, Moto!

+ proliferation of Android
- ugly
- 4 row keyboard instead of 5
? what OS is that on there... doesn't look like any version of Android I've seen.
ANdrew @ Apr 29th 2009 7:22PM
Is this a Joke?? Thats Windows Mobile Running Throttle Laucher with Windows 7 theme HAHAHAHA
ANdrew @ Apr 29th 2009 7:24PM
Thats a Windows mobile 7 theme lol Android it is not...
Psycros @ Apr 30th 2009 1:11AM
Uh, folks, that looks like the keyboard off of a Q. Pretty sure this is pure concept.
Matt @ Apr 30th 2009 10:46AM
The image is stretched horizontally. None of the circles (moto logo, clock) are actually circular. It loos much better if you take it back to normal dimensions.
