Nokia Music veep addresses slow Comes with Music sales in the UK
After some rather disheartening (albeit unconfirmed) estimates last week that Nokia's Comes with Music service had snagged only 23,000 subscribers in the United Kingdom, Rob Taylor, vice president of Nokia Music says that the company is pretty "happy" with what its learned there so far. He admitted that the UK launch (the service's first) devices -- the 5310 Xpress Music and the 8GB N95 -- were "slightly out of date" at the time pointing out that the service was doing much better in subsequent markets, which all boast the 5800 as their hero device. Taylor said he also recognized that Nokia needed more retail partners to help move units, and that the company is not "giving up" on the UK as a market for CwM, adding that they'll be bringing the 5800 there in the future. No word on when that might happen yet -- but we're going to keep out eyes peeled for you.
Update: We just heard from a Nokia rep, and it turns out that these comments did not come from Rob Taylor (who is actually the head of Forum Nokia, not VP of Nokia Music) at all -- but from Lenn Pryor, Vice President, Product Marketing for the Services and Software division.

Just a word of warning: If you leave peeled eyes out for too long they shrivel up. Stick 'em in a jar of saline solution and they'll keep for a week in the fridge.
That interface sure is beautiful..
/sarcasm
did it take anyone else a minute to decipher that headline?
Yep. Trying to workout how old this news is as well since the 5800 has been on sale in the UK for a little while now. Like almost all touch screen phones, it's way too big for my taste.

Yep. At first I thought 'veep' was the name of a revamped 'Comes with Music' scheme. It's the kind of stupid name that's popular with internet-related music thingies these days.
@Neil: The 5800 has been out for a while, but not teh CwM edition. That's why so few people have CwN in the UK.
what a stupid place to put the camera.
yeh who needs a camera pointing at them for video calls.
/sarcasm
stupid for pictures, not so stupid for video conferencing
I think it is more stupid than you don't know that phone in Europe has 2 cameras... one for pics, other in FRONT for video calls...
Leave him alone guys, it's clear a front-facing camera offends him because of his ugly, ugly face.
P2P file sharing is the only way to go as far as music. It's no different than the old tape recorder. I believe that we should be able to share media. We don't have the right to sell CD's and etc. for profit. When you sign up for these P2P applications, you agree not to do just that. So far I have saved thousands and the artist are doing just fine.

"When you sign up for these P2P applications, you agree not to do just that. So far I have saved thousands and the artist are doing just fine."
Are you serious? That's the most ignorant argument i've heard about anything since Hitler.
"So far I have saved thousands and the artist are doing just fine."
Youve gotta be kidding me, for some reason you strike me as the kind of person who wouldnt vote because your believe your vote wouldnt count, or not recycling because your only one man.
Completely ignorant.... Dude... you just hung yourself... If this forum was to be monitored by the authorities... HUGE fines coming your way! I DO HOPE SO!
I support the other 2 posters before me.
It is like if the lover of your wife tells you: "Well so far I have only made her love every day while you are at work, but at least she is not pregnant.. no need to thank me!"
I bet he also avoids paying taxes, gets free cable, and hogs his neighbor wifi.
Make a choice with your wallet or the only music that'll make it into the popular domain will be whatever the people who can't use a bittorent client will buys. Or even better, an iPod with a subscription fee and adverts between tracks.
A somewhat unrealistic vision but much less than your 'no money makes the world go round' idea. You could of course just make the right moral choice and support the artists whose music you're enjoying.
this looks almost like a Palm TX made into a phone.
I have the n95 8gb and live in the uk. When I tried to subscribe to this service was told that its for new n95 8gb sales only although i only re-signed my contract last august.
Otherwise I would have been able to.

Well, duh.
Nokia starts a music store this late in the game and expects it to work? Im shocked they even have 23,000 users.
Nokia you make phones, why not focus more on making them good phones. We have so many other ways to get music as it is. I feel this is just a waste of company time and money.
If Nokia would hire me, I would do some firing , whoever is in charge of Nokia "downloads" , beta labs, and the music service. I would clear them out
Have you seen nokia beta labs? Although it might have a few useful apps, most of them are really stupid and pointless. Its like when you get paid for a job that no one checks on you, so you just screw around to collect a pay check.
Because its not just about the phones. You need services to draw people in. The same way iTunes makes people buy iPods.
They did produce a rather lackluster service though with the most unoriginal name. "Comes with Music" What genius thought of that.
They're just compounding their earlier mistake, if only they'd stuck to making paper like in 1865 they never would've gotten into the stupid and embarrassing situation of moving ~1,000,000 phones per day...
Nokia, you make paper!
/sarcasm
Sounds like someone has firsthand experience working at Nokia beta labs ;-)
The problem is the delay, they said the 5800 would be out by the end of March with CwM but it just hasn't happened, now there's not much point in pinning their hopes it picking up CwM sales because the peak of 5800 sales has come and gone :-/
Why do people put "/sarcasm" at the end of a comment containing sarcasm? That's like telling a joke and then explaining why it's funny immediately afterwards. We know you're being sarcastic, and for those that don't - let them not know.
We had all this Nokia news in the last few days and THIS is the one you report? As if you hadn't already had your glee at the failure that CWM admittedly is so far. But somehow you have been ignoring
- the Nokia Developing Summit, with several interesting news bits
- the 5800 selling 3 million, reaching 20% market share in Q1/09
- upcoming launch of ovi store
- N97 SDK
- ...
I know you aren't the biggest Nokia/Symbian fans in the world, but a little less bias wouldn't hurt
...and by then the 5800 will be out of date.
...and everyone will be buying the N97 in Europe.
