Doomsday alert: internet to become an "unreliable toy" in 2012
Okay, so first things first -- we all know the world's on track to end in 2012, so it's not like this really matters. But if, just if it manages to survive (à la Y2K), you can pretty much bank on a mass reversal of culture as we all push aside our netbooks and return to the playground. According to some "research" slated to be fully published "later this year," PCs and laptops are apt to "operate at a much reduced speed, rendering the internet an unreliable toy" from 2012 onward. The reason? Massive growth in internet demand, which is undoubtedly on pace to crush existing infrastructure that can't ever be improved upon by anyone, regardless of their market capitalization or determination to expand. It's noted that the internet itself will somehow survive, but that users will begin to see "brownouts," which are described as "a combination of temporary freezing and computers being reduced to a slow speed." Thank heavens for FinallyFast, right?
Psst... the solution to all of this is just past the break.
[Thanks, Colin]
Note: Engadget doesn't endorse FinallyFast -- we just think their commercial is hilarious.

But... That's a PowerPC iBook... It's running Windows? This.. This is madness!
THIS IS SPARTA!!!!
My favorite parts of the commercial are when they show people using Macs, but then at the end of the commercial the fine print says, "Is for PC Computers only".
Of course, to be more accurate, it should say, "For Windows computers only".
Only use it on a personal computer computer.
No, that means it's not for mainframes. :-)
OMG that commercial is annoying. Having TWO Macs in their commercial that cannot use their service shows gross ignorance. Yeah, I REALLY trust them now.
Oh wait, I ONLY use Ubuntu and Mac OS. I have no reason to use them!
I'll scan and diagnose that loading screen girl
i'm so glad i'm not the only person who noticed this.
also - the hybrid internet explorer/firefox
sigh.
It work on Ubuntu??!
But my AS/400 is so freaking slow arghhh I can't take it anymore! I wish the monitor outputted color so I could see a blue screen, then I know finally fast would work!
No, this is Patrick.
@ Nick J I literally laughed out loud at your comment during work
in the year 2012... there will be something better than the internet
I hear that's the year Engadget plans on updating their comment system.
zing!
That's a bit of a UK government IT project timeline, give it until 2025 and £120mil budget overruns and you might be more on target.
@Who?
http://www.instantrimshot.com/
But how can you improve on perfection?
Of course; we'll have our flying cars and timetravel and fountains of youth and such to occupy our time with.
What could be better than the interent? Two words: "Barn Raising". It's barntastic!
The same thing was said in 1996 that by 1998, demand for the internet would exceed capacity (supply) and it would all come to a screeching crawl or crash. That was at a time when most people were still in 28.8k dial up and 56k was a newfangled device.
reminds me of a hilarious south park episode.
Just unplug and replug in the router...
I'm sure I could find many posts on here that remind me of South Park. There's not much they haven't covered
The Simpsons already did it
"The Simpsons already did it"
When???
We got a while, be sure to update us when 2012 rolls around. Right now the internet seems to be running okay.
That's just what *they* want you to believe! It wasn't long ago, I browsing at 2400bps! Now I only get around 10Mbps when I'm lucky. And we all know 2400 is a bigger number than 10, right???
hahaha nice
Yeah, but then you read the "M" in the Mbps and should realize that, oh, hey, that means it's over 1 MILLION bits per second, which, last time I checked, was larger than 2400 (there are more zeros). That's 1,310,720 bps, only 1,308,320 bits more than 2400. But, oh well. I'm sorry. I realize I'm extremely sarcastic, and I apologize to anyone I might have offended. But it seems like it should be fairly common knowledge for the people that have an internet connection, or even a computer. We know gigabytes are larger than megabytes, which are larger than kilobytes, etc. Giga>Mega>Kilo>Bytes>bits. I will get off my soap box now.
NO! Not *they*. I hate *they*.
And, um, Phoenix, while I'm sure the poster above you appreciated the lesson, I'm guessing they were being facetious with their 2400 vs. 10 comment...with their entire comment, actually.
@Phoenix
OBJECTION!
Being so wrapped up in your sarcasm, you missed the tongue in cheek nature of the joke at hand, and took it seriously!
@Phoenix
you forgot nibbles.
We need more tubes.
well played
Whats scary is that tubes are still in use. I worked as a DJ in a country station when I was in high school. The AM exciter was 50+ years old, took up more space than most walk in closets and had tubes bigger than softballs. It doubles as a heater in the winter. They're still using it.
Polymath,
Many high-end audio equipment companies still make tube amplifiers today. A certain segment of the high-end audiophile crowd swears by them. There's a bit of warmth produced by a certain type of distortion you only get with analog. 1001010101 converted to analog only sounds so warm.
lol I didn't notice until today that commercial shows Internet Explorer with a Firefox error message. Effing hilarious
I really think the people at FinallyFast intentionally made that commercial so utterly ridiculous with so many incongruous items being smashed together. Anybody so completely technological inept to actually buy the product would clearly be oblivious to the inconsistencies. It's their own way of laughing (even more) at the fools who call them up.
Lol - I remember seeing this commercial a few times a couple months back. First time I saw it I was laughing my ass off. I was like, what 5 year old made this. If you noticed, there are several APPLE computers in the commercial yet the commercial specifically states it's product is for PC's ONLY. Not to mention these Apple computers are running windows and blue screening. Lol.
Terrible actors. Crap commercial.
I like the "Email" website that is clearly Gmail.
My Mac can run Windows. You mean yours can't???
@aardWolf
Seriously? Grow the hell up and shamelessly plug your thieving corporate masters somewhere relevant. Jesus.
@cwc0115
Nerdrage much? What he said was entirely relevant, reading comprehension fail. People were touting the fact that the commercial has several Mac computers in it, which is stupid as the program only runs in Windows, and that it actually shows a BSOD on a Mac (OMG NO WAI). He therefore answered, that his Mac CAN run Windows, like most all others, and sarcastically added "can't yours?" to point out prior ignoring of the facts.
Douche bag.
@aardWolf
Yes but those are powerbooks running windows! i doubt your powerbook is running windows 7...
It just shows how much these idiots don't know about computers. Your internet speed is capped by your ISP you can't get it to download files faster with any software unless you uncap your modem.
This commercial is so bad it's good again.
"we all know the world's on track to end in 2012"
Uh...say what now?
