MSI's all-in-one Wind Top AE1900 gets dissected

MSI's new all-in-one Wind Top AE1900 may look all neat and tidy on the outside, but it's an expectedly different story on the inside, as the folks at Blogeee.net found out when they unceremoniously ripped one apart. Of course, there aren't exactly a ton of surprises to be found, but it does look like anyone hoping to upgrade the RAM may be out of luck, as the standard 2GB of RAM is simply soldered on with no slot provided for expansion -- although there seems to be a bit of confusion as to whether that'll be the case in the actual retail version, or just this early version sent out for review. Hit up the read link below for a closer look.

The motherboard looks alot like the one in the MSI Wind PC barebones system that I have. Just looks like they mounted it to the back of an lcd along with a HDD and DVD drive.
I agree, but what do you expect? A computer really does not consist of much? Not 100% sure what you are expecting? They are trying to keep the cost down and you are still getting a quality product.
It looks find to me. I have built computers for years. This is a low powered CPU and GPU so no super fancy cooling is needed or heat sinks.
Where's the masking tape?
I was looking for the exact same thing in the picture!
Me too!
for those of you that are thinking wtf? http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/25/msi-x-slim-x340-gets-dissected/
came here to post this damnit
First thing I looked for too! This looks relatively well engineered compared to the laptop version.
Cheap looking Crap!!
Will it run Crysis?
Will you ever stop asking that?
Will it run... Duke Nukem Forever?
Have these fine chaps at MSI ever heard of cable management?
I was thinking the same thing. That thing looks like it was put together by a person who knows nothing about computing. Don't turn it upside down or else the cable will get caught in the fan! There is also a lot of wasted space. Looks way too cheap.
That's only 1GB of RAM standard, son.
I was gonna say, the dual core, 2 GB of ram version has ram slots on it, the single core with 1 GB of ram does not
It really looks like a pre-production unit.. I can't see them using that sloppy wiring in the finished product, considering every laptop I've ever disassembled has had pretty much every single wire wrapped in em shielding of some sort, often then wrapped in kapton tape.
There are clearly unpopulated ram slots just below where the fan is in that picture... If those aren't populated in the final retail version it should be, well, not-impossible to solder in a slot.
Hmm not sure what some of you are complaining about, the cables are fine. This isnt a laptop and it likely wont run as hot as one, Theres a shell theat goes over the back, none of them will be pinched when its put on. The comment about the wires int he fan, not sure what picture you're looking at but the only wires I see near the fan are the ones powering it, and they are secured in a way that its not even remotely possible to get into the blades. As for the masking tape, I don't think that is exactly what that is, and I've seen it used in many electrical devices to tidy wires, not quite that excessive but who cares, it works.
where's the tape?
Beefy laptop heatink
They're not out of luck.
They just need to learn to solder SMDs. noobs
I've got an unboxing over at http://techstauf4.com/2009/04/30/unboxing-the-msi-windtop . I just installed the Windows 7 RC on it and it's quite responsive. It does take advantage of the new touch features, although it's not multi-touch and I had some initial calibration issues.
If MSI is trying to impress anyone with this why are they still using PS2 connectors?
The cheapest Dells don't have them anymore. Get rid of them and add 2 more USB
looks good and this thing is cheap
