Liked that blurry photo of a new Palm webOS phone
we saw earlier? Well how about some specs, a name, and a better look at this thing? Enter the device above, apparently dubbed the Palm Eos (codenamed Castle...
where have we seen that before?), which it seems will be the company's proper follow-up to the Centro -- a quadband GSM / HSDPA phone notably rocking the 850 / 1900 AT&T and Rogers-friendly frequencies. The phone will supposedly be an astounding 10.6mm thin, will measure just 55mm x 111mm (about 2.1 by 4.3-inches), weigh 100 grams, and will tout a 2.63-inch, 320 x 400 capacitive display. Of course, the info we've got right now can't be verified, and since there are a couple of minor question marks here (like barely rounded corners in the OS), you should take it all with a grain of salt... as usual. Needless to say, we're working on getting more details (and some confirmation), so stay tuned!
Update: Oh boy -- looks like we just got the full spec list. And yes, it's definitely coming to AT&T (if it's really coming).

Huh. Eos is also a Canon digital camera, an asteroid, a geophysical journal, a card game publisher, and... oh yes, the Greek goddess of dawn.
I like the name, Eos. It's blissfully short and, because the word doesn't already mean something (Storm, Magic, Diamond, etc) it gets to create its own identity.
If this is Palm's take on the current trend of device names I think Palm will have the advantage.
Why is this so hard for people to believe. Rubinstein designs phones. the Pre was done being designed by January. Its almost 5 months later and people think he is still working on the Pre. He is working on other phones. I guarantee we will also see a landscape slider too. Cover all their bases. I doubt AT&T would have this before 2010. Hell Palm probably leaked this to see what peoples opinions were.
The reason why palm is making more phones is simple. When a carrier like Rogers takes the IPHone, apple tells rogers: "You cannot offer any phones that are in a direct competition to the iPhone". Right there means Rogers cannot sell the BB Storm, Palm Pre, or any pure touch-screen phone that rivals the iphone. because of this, carriers are making phones that won't rival, but will out-preform the iPhone.
not everyone wants touch screen. Does my 60 year old dad want a pure touch screen phone his calloused hands will destroy?
Seriously? Can no one see that all it is is an iPhone body with Blackberry keys? This is a bad Photoshop. Cmon Engadget. Really? Really, Engadget?
Have you ever seen an iPhone or a Blackberry? iPhone has flat sides, not rounded, and the Blackberry's keys look absolutely nothing like that. This is a Centro/Treo Pro keyboard. I'm not saying for sure if it's real or fake, but it is most definitely NOT what you're claiming it to be.
Can't believe some people on this blog are actually taking this story seriously?! It's fake for goodness sake!!!
Lets hope it runs the WebOS and is touchscreen, if not, = fail
2 megapixel cam? come on, and 4gb of storage? they will have to bring something good to the table this time around
Of course it's going to have webOS, Palm said Garnet/PalmOS reached it's end-of-life.
Not without better specs. 4GB? no card slot? Fake GPS? FAIL.
It's more than obvious that that's not a real phone, but it doesn't mean the history is a fake. The image is just a recreation, based on Pre's and Pro's design, and could be very accurate. The specs sound at least believable, and we know (Rubinstein said it) that Palm has some devices cooking in the oven. Also, we know Palm needs and wants a Centro's substitute. Also, Digitimes said something about devices ordered by Palm (and Pre is done by CMCS):

I give this rumour credibility, basically because it's very possible something similar to this.
Doesn't the Pre have some sort of strip below the screen that's required for some actions, like selecting text? I don't see that here...
That's why there's nothing left or right of the center button, just like on the Pre.
As a long time Palm user and ATT customer, I would be interested in this. I left Palm a year and a half ago for the iPhone This EOS needs to step up to get me back, and I want to go back.
its just another phone att cant screw you out of your money with
Lol who decided to do a render in isometric view.

That design is fucking amazing.
Had to say it.
This is what a candy bar smartphone should be! If Palm and AT&T and colluding, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Verizon and Apple treaty come to fruition.
If it manages to sell for $99 on contract, it'll be a huge hit. It's taking the low-end smartphone slot that Apple refused to fill with an iPhone Nano, so people on AT&T who were eyeing the iPhone might opt to save some cash and still get a comparable touchscreen smartphone.
If the price is 99.00 with 2 year contract (one year is better) it will make lots of palm faithful happy once again.
That render basically looks like an iPhone with the Centro keyboard slapped on it.
I guess the resolution will really test how webOS scales to different screens. A higher than Pre res/bigger screen one can't be far away...
If this thing is real, it will outsell the Pre simply because its on a much bigger network and probably cheaper on contract.
unlikely to have a 320 x 400 screen, more likely 320 x 480.Obviously to compete against BB bold.Hate the centro like plasticky keys (so unprofessional). The original treo keyboard was much better
Amazing if it is 320*480
Weak, this is like a Sony Clie spec with a celluar feature. Still it is an update to the Centro
How can this thing be so thin? I think it's a bad photoshop.... Can we just get the Pre instead on AT&T?
Looks like it could be another winner in the making by PALM, have to wait and see what they do with it.
this would have been my next phone if it had wifi...
I really hope that this is coming to AT&T. I would drop the iphone in a minute.
This is the base platform for everything I want in a phone. Super thin with a qwerty stuffed at the bottom. Touch screen with a trackball. Now I want it to be squared off with an HD screen edge to edge in the remaining space. 5mp camera with auto-focus.A2dp. 3g and all the amenities. You now have the perfect phone. Just In case someones listening.
No wifi radio? Come on, get with it!
Well, this looks an awful LOT like the Treo Pro -- which I have.
IF this is a real phone, not a photoshop vapor, then perhaps Palm is looking to replace the Centro line with a cheaper smartphone that uses some of the same hardware as the Treo Pro, but running the new WebOS.
IE:
- Target the same market as Treo Centro,
- Run Palm WebOS,
- Treo Pro-style package (but cheaper [no wi-fi, etc.], thinner, and taller screen)
Not a bad looking device, however, if the keyboard is the size of the Centro, it won't be a big hit with me, and I'll be jumping ship with the Palm altogether. Palm devices have been good, I've been using them for years. If only they could make the 850 that is manufactured for sprint, in a smaller thinner size, with all the shebang of this device...it would be a hit. Palm has done it right, up until the Centro... I have yet to see the Pre, however Palm should look further into the way the layout of the Blackberry is, in size comparison. I've been a Palm user, before phones were ever introduced, for almost 8 years now. And up until the Centro for ATT, I loved their workmanship. Let's get it together, Palm! Reducing the size of the keyboard was a failure for the Centro. If you are going to have a qwerty keyboard, at least make it one that's functionable! Combine the sleek view of the Blackberry with the Palm's new updated system, and it will be a hit for sure!
I know I should be happy for palm to push this new OS, but using AT&T is making them an ass! AT&T already has the iphone, so there will be some competition for smartphones, I don't know how palm will stack up since the iphone has the cool-factor on its side. Also, the pre is sprint's big thing and taking its functionality to AT&T, sprints huge competitor, because of the iphone, is just kinda bitchy. I know they are trying to get their product out there, but this is not the right way.
Which is it...Mac? or PC friendly? Jones'ing for a Mac-friendly Palm on Verizon...hey Verizon...get with the program!
