Motorola intros i465 Clutch, company's first QWERTY iDEN device
Following the seemingly unstoppable trend toward QWERTY and heavy texting in the low end of the market, Motorola has announced its very first iDEN device to ever feature a full keyboard. The rumored i465 looks just a little better in glamorous press shots than it did before, and it's picked up a name along the way -- Clutch. Naturally, Boost Mobile is a perfect fit for the thing, and the Sprint division looks to be launching this quarter. Specs include Bluetooth 1.2, a 160 x 128 display, video capture via a VGA cam (hey, it's low-end, what did you expect?), and mil-spec compliance for shock, vibration, and all that good stuff that you might need when your phone hits the pavement. Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but we don't expect it to break the bank.

Is it just me or do those keys look terrible to type on?
Pointy keyboard.. Motorola engineers obviously dont have decent keyboards in their workspace if they think this is good for my thumbs
What's with the exhaust vents at the bottom of the keyboard?
This phone will never compete with the IPHONE
To let the smoke out when the battery explodes of course.
It's one of the single ugliest phones I've ever seen.
Clutch? Gives me images of clutching my stomach while I hurl! That's it...call it Hurl!
yea right, good luck with text messaging in iden network lol
Nothing wrong with iDen actually except that no one uses it.
On the other hand this phone sucks! BT 1.2, VGA cam, 1in. thick?!? Breaking news?!
Imagine typing on that. It looks like a nightmare.
I agree from the pictures, but it's surprisingly decent!
Why introduce a phone with a qwerty and they can't even figure out how to get rid of the 6+ hours between when a text message was sent and when I get my texts on my phone? I just love getting texts at 4:30am from the day before.
Get a cell phone that uses a real network. iDEN was never even meant for phone calls, much less text messaging and data.
That looks like a chunky mo-fo
whats it for!
its a paperweight of course
QWERTY and 160 x 128 display, WTF?
Yikes, only 3H talk time.
Well, at least they got the iPhone beat I 'spose.
Please...this phone looks crappy..but release it for Nextel...PLEASE! It would immediately be the best phone available on Nextel.
Motorola should really allow their software guys redo the phone OS. Every IDEN device in the last billion years looks the same, OS wise, which is terribly outdated. It's probably the reason for the screen limitation.
iDEN?? They are still making new iDEN phones? I guess construction workers need new phones once in a while. How do they type with their neanderthal fingers on those little keys?
No wonder motorola is tanking hard.
F**K THIS TERRIBLE PHONE!
URGH,
they make small screen mobiles, horrible keys to type on, SAME OLD OS, looks like a brick and a waste of money.
GET THE IDEA MOTOROLA,
we don't want little bricks, we want POWA PHONES! 8D
That...is...hideous.
160x128...I remember buying a phone with a screen like that in 2003 or so.
Bluetooth 1.2? I hope that's a typo and it's really Bluetooth 2.1. But with the 160x128 display, something makes me doubt it.
I've got to say it really does seem like nothing special, in ANY way BUT I am thinking that typing on the keyboard wouldn't be bad. The angles will help with differentiating the keys and separating them thus fewer mis-keys. I actually think the keyboard is kinda clever. (not mind blowing clever, just kinda clever).

I agree. Though the phone is narrower than other querty phones the keyboard structure would give enough space between each keys for finger press.
Fuck u
Im willing to be open to the pointed keyboard design. It might allow for more direct presses to the letters. My only problem is the color. Why not Gray with a silver keyboard or All Silver or sumthin.
Eitherway, Texting on Boost mobile isnt as bad as people think. Is the Send/ Recieve Rate as Timely as Sprint, Verizon, ATT, etc? No but for the most part you get them when your supposed to. Id say maybe 2 in 12 of the texts sent on a Boost you get late.
Yeah the keyboard sure is clever. Silver keyboard with black letters might be a problem, silver body with black Keyboard would be a great option.
Texting on Boost is that bad. On the i855, with the older-gen firmware, messages take anywhere from 5 to an indefinite amount (mean dropped download) to download to the device, once you recieve it and tell the phone you want to read it. Newer iDEN phones have an auto-download feature, but that doesn't always work.
One of my classmates, who has an i776 on Nextel (and even before with his i870), constanly complains of delayed or just black-holed text messages. It might be something with his SIM or his account, but if such problems can happen regularly, there is an inherent flaw in the underlying technology.
Youpla Boom
No wonder Motorola's profits are falling. Is this seriously the best they can come up with. Maybe they should just stick with Walky-Talkies.
The 90's called, they want their industrial design ideas back.
Why oh why is iDen so far behind GSM and CDMA?
/rhetoric
Blackberry 7100i is/was a QWERTY iDEN phone.
The BB 7100i has a Pearl-esque partial keyboard with SureType predictive text entry. It's not what we'd call full-QWERTY.
A face that only a mother could love.
And people wonder why Motorola has financial troubles.
It's 2009. I want my vowels back.
*looks squarely at Contcs and Mesgs*
It'll probably cost more than $150 - for not much more, you can get an unlocked Nokia E63. Why do Motorola and Sprint Nextel continue to invest in iDEN? As soon as my year studying abroad is up (and my dad's Verizon contract ends, which is only a few months after that), I'm getting off Boost for good - my i855 is not a phone anyone except my grandparents would be happy with.
Seriously no point in this phone since texting is just crap on iDen's network.
Great phone just bought one very fast on the web instant texting key board is better than it looks very easy to type on in my opinion its easyer than my blackberry that i had the keyboard is not pointy rather its rounded for easy key distiguishing i have big thumbs and i can type on it easily
