Nokia N86 8MP features amazing active kickstand
So here we were, thinking that the Nokia N86 8MP was just a featurebumped N85, and what happens? These screenshots showing off a series of custom settings for the kickstand in the back leak out and blow our minds. See, the N96 just has a dumb plastic stand back there, but the N86 8MP can actually launch an app when you flip it out, making it an instant video player, picture frame, or speaker system. That's innovation, friends. Now let's party.

BEST PHONE EVA!!!
It is a good phone, but the stand looks undoubtedly flimbsy.
NOICE!
Can I get the kickstand chromed?
Absolutely. Efficiency is priority number one, people. Because waste is a thief....
(indicating Jack)
I showed this already to my man here. You liked it, didn't you?
Jack smiles. His teeth are red with blood. They glow eerily in the dim light. Everybody stares at him.
JACK (V.O.)
You can swallow a pint of blood before you get sic.
one of the few design touches that actually makes a difference. bravo, nokia. one of the few things you got right.
I guess you didn't get the sarcasm.
I could see myself accidentally breaking the kickstand off.
I'm sure you've flushed many phones down the toilet while reching out for the flushing lever.
WIN!
My kickstand is bigger :O
Is it just me or is this article lathered in sarcasm?
what can you say.. her mouth stuck on jobs wang.
Nilay is a dude
No he isn't, or is she?
normaly id be on the defencive too..... but i mean, honestly, even i dont think a kick stand has
any more inovation than "jobs".......
great article all in all
You idiots, get to no your editors more!
Yea that's how I read it...the whole kickstand thing seems kinda pointless to me. It can't be that tough to start a program and flip out the kickstand...
at first i thought this was something where when you launch an app, it flipped out a motorized kickstand in response to your desire for picture-frame-like photoviewing/messaging/video playing phone action... but you have to flip it out yourself?
the hell with that noise.
Gosh.... I was actually wondering several years ago, when will they do this.... Didn't imagine anyone other than Nokia to do this. LOL
Now can I just get it in AWS flavor?
what is the life expectancy of the oled on this? if its more than 1 year then this phone is mine.
FYI .. I've had an N85 for about 8 months .. its OLED screen is still as bright as the day it arrived.
Now thats what I'm talkin about!
I'm not ready for this yet. Is there one with training wheels?
that's what she said
The n85 didn't have a kickstand. That was the n96.
Wait, Nilay wrote an article about a non-apple product and it is actually not negative?
obviously, you're sarcasm detector is broken...
Wow! that's some out of the box thinking...the stand can come in very handy at times. It does look a bit delicate though
I seriously don't know whether this article is sarcastic or not....
I mean, it "is" innovation, but again, an "app" that "launches" the flip out? Wouldn't it be easier to manually flip it out, instead of going through brain-dead S60 menus and options?
So yeah maybe Nilay was sarcastic...
Umm, the app launches when you flip the stand out, not you use the app to flip out the kickstand.
"launch an app when you flip it out"
Wow!... I hope YOU were being sarcastic.. for your sake!
this puts my passive kickstand to shame :(
No, sorry, that is NOT innovation. It's called a switch.
This was a really good article. (THAT was sarcasm)
And what's with that Star Trek interface? Is that innovative too?
Seriously...that whimpy little stand will last a day befor it snaps off grabbing the phone off the desk.
Gentlemen, Have you ever seen an N85? There is no kickstand, I think Mr. Patel is talking about an N96.
Dear Mr. Patel,
Please do a bit of basic research before you shoot of your wad.
Kind Regards.
ok first of all this phone looks great and i think that the kick stand launching a app of your choice is a great idea, but here is the thing with nokia all you nokia haters is that if you don't like that feature you can turn it OFF!!!!! if there is one reason that i like nokia more then any other brand is the fact that you can customize it more then 99 % of other phones. i am still waiting for the n97 though
Looks too flimsy.
If it is supposed to be something you rely on and use often, they should have made it out of metal, and attached/supported by a metal frame, so when you snap it open it doesn't snap off.
From what I see in the picture it looks about as solid as a toothpick.
Active kickstand on N86: Sarcasm city.
I could imagine if something like this was added to the next iPhone it would read like this:
Apple have added an innovative feature known as iKickstand. As soon as you open iKickstand you are transported to a world of wonder and awe as the iPhone rotates the screen and pops up a really useful message asking if you want to start the iPod app on the phone or if you want to open a photo slideshow. This is innovation like no other and once again puts the mighty iPhone lightyears ahead with iKickstand.
That's a bit exaggerated, but if apple did put one in (which they won't, tackyyyyy) it would be made of solid aluminium and probably have a support system (foldy bracket even) to stop it breaking off in two days...
speaking of tacky, anyone remember those original iMacs?
Those were tastefully tacky.
Or innovatively tacky. Tack your pick.
No, just regular tacky.
Well the way I just see it they are pumping their Kickstand phone with more powers then SE's. i also love how hours if not a couple of days after the W995 this came out of nowhere. Competition will be tough or what. You got the W995 which is an SE has the kickstand and a 3.5MM jack with a 2.6" screen and is lighter and less bulky or do I go for the brick which has everything Symbian and a kickstand with technology magic?
RAVE RAVE RAVE LIGHT STICKS!
A new KSeries is about to release!
What is the point of this article? Nokia have included a little feature that might be helpful to some people and they aren't making a big deal out of it and you just feel a need to make fun of it for no reason.
This is what happens when you get bitter Engadget editors who have to still contend with a dinky 2 megapixel camera on a $1000 (over the course of two years) iPhone.
