Palm Eos headed to Sprint as well?
Okay everyone -- grain of salt goggles on? According to PhoneNews, not only is a GSM version of the Palm Eos (AKA Mini Pre, AKA Pixie, AKA Castle) coming to AT&T sometime in the near future, but Sprint will be getting its version of the Centro-like device come Q3 2009. The site claims that "sources within Sprint" have "confirmed" the launch window for a phone with specs similar to those on the device we hit yesterday, and that said device is actually in testing right now. Of course, just as we mentioned with the Eos news, this isn't actually confirmed by anyone at Palm (or even close) right now... and you know how much the internet loves a rumor. Still, this would make a lot of sense as Sprint and Palm are all but joined at the hip, and it helps jibe some of the differing reports we / the blogosphere has heard about carriers. Obviously there's much, much more to this story -- you'll know about it when we do.

How about you come out with the first phone before you announce another!! I don't get it!
the "internal Sprint folks" probably confused the Pre and this one when they said "in testing and coming out Q32009".
They haven't announced this phone.
What you should get is that no one has announced anything more than the Pre. It's easy to do it if you RTFA.
This could so totally replace my Nokia E71 if it had WiFi, a 3.5mm jack, GPS, and a microSD slot. Oh, and better battery life (even assuming the best about the stated talk time specs listed yesterday).
I love super-thin and feature-packed portrait QWERTY candybars :)
Better battery life than the E71? You so crazy.
Yeah, I know...My E71 has ridiculous battery life but I've always been a believer of never stepping down as tech progresses.
Now that's my kind of form factor!
palm can keep this garbage.
Do we know for sure that this'll run WebOS?
Yes. They are replacing all their old devices with WebOS, so it would only make logical sense. Plus they have stated that webOS is the future of palm.
That would be logical, but the render doesn't feature a very distinct WebOS screenshot. Thus the wondering.
If this is real, it'd make a sweet little phone for the wife when we both switch over from ATT.
No; Palm has stated that they will continue to have phones that run Windows Mobile.
You guys/gals, this is fake, how on earth are so many people fooled? For the record, Palm said they will continue to support the Windows Platform as well, Palm ended PalmOS. Also, Palm officially said, "the Pre is the only wireless Phone that will run webOS." Palm plans on releasing a Netbook running webOS. Ask yourselves this question, if Palm was able to keep webOS and the Pre a secret for over 2 years, why would Palm allow this leak out? I think someone is trying to undermine the Pre.
"Also, Palm officially said, "the Pre is the only wireless Phone that will run webOS." "
Actually, they said the exact opposite of that. Nice try, though.
@chefgon_ign
How intelligent, you low rank someone without any proof to back up your comment. Provide an official statement from a "Palm Official" which says webOS is planned for other phones, not an unnamed tipster or anonymous source. I doubt Palm would undercut it's flagship product by releasing a lessor featured product with the same OS. This is not like the typical Winmo, or PalmOS device. Palm wants to create an entirely new ecosystem using the Palm Pre. I will be waiting for your reply...
Grain of salt goggles?
Ow.
I was thinking the same thing.. Salt Goggles would really hurt, but I guess Beer Goggles would too!
This is a cool looking device. Would like to see it become real. Would like to see Palm survive. :)
Come on Palm get something out soon..lest you go bankrupt..
Where's the palm love, verizon?
Verizon gets all smartphones 6 months after Sprint. It's the way it's always been minus the new BB. They need to figure out a way to disable GPS, halve the RAM, and plaster it with bright red VCast skins.
Considering how good Palm was at covering up the Pre before it was announced, I'm surprised at all these leaks, especially since there's little real substance behind them.
I wouldn't rule it out just because of that, the first phone running a new OS is a much more important secret to keep than the second. I'm sure they went to EXTREME measures to keep the Pre under wraps, why bother going through so much trouble just to keep its little brother under wraps when we all knew that more form-factors were coming soon anyway?
Quite possible the leaks aren't coming from Palm but one of the carriers, like yesterday's initial leak was more than likely from someone at AT&T looking to cut down Sprint and the Pre at the knees. Today could simply be Sprint returning some fire. Palm is probably pissed because the last thing they want is people waiting for the second WebOS device and passing on the Pre because their finances might not allow them to get to device 2 if device 1 doesn't sell well.
Someday I'd like to have a Palm Eos and drive a VW Eos :)
Taking photos on your Canon Eos while you go, be careful not to crash.
Don't forget to photograph it with your Canon EOS. :-P
And if you're hungry, you can eat some Cheetos.
Did a three year old render that?
Looks like a blackberry, scrolls like a blackberry, must a blackberry. Never liked palm and their software. Went blackberry and won't look back.
That's not a trackball, it's a button
Makes sense. Palm was top of the smart phone game only a few short years ago. It makes sense that they get their asses in gear and bring out some updated hardware and software. Their recent strategy was always a high and a low end device so the Pre/Eos combo would be like the Treo Pro and Centro today, albeit with much nicer hardware and software. I'm glad to see them back in the game. My first smart phone back in 2005 was a Palm and it was impressive for its time.
Now if only a second Android phone would come out. I really don't like the design of the G1, and there is no way I would ever move to T-Mobile. If only a new one could come to Verizon by the end of the year..
I think Verizon's supposed to be getting that goofy looking Motorola one, but I'd be completely shocked if it was left as open as the G1 was. It'll be locked down and loaded with Verizon services.
My favorite thing about being a T-Mobile customer is that they're lazy and they don't bother offering any carrier-branded services so their smartphones are pretty much just factory settings with nothing locked out or bogged down with carrier bloatware.
Only thing attracts me is the name eos
If this thing actually runs webOS, I might just skip the Pre. I am not crazy about slideout keyboards anymore, and this phones profile looks great. I guess time will tell.
I'm so stoked for this. I loved my Moto Q9H on AT&T specifically because it was a candybar qwerty w/ a great OS. This OS is leaps and bounds beyond WinMo 6.1, and it has the same form factor as my Q9h. Looks like a winner, at least on paper. Hopefully the size is closer to Q9/Bold/Blackjack than to Centro- if its closer to the Centro, it will be too small for me.
???? and another one just for fun?.
Joshua, Joshua..Joshua. You are not stupid..but I really wish that AOL will send you guys to Journalism school!
The thing that people are forgetting in saying that "Palm kept the Pre such a close secret beforehand and now they look like sieve" is that what was leaked yesterday was a GSM device.
In other words, AT&T could have easily 'accidentally' leaked it as damage control. They know that a ton of people are interested in the Pre, and while not everyone will switch to Sprint, letting people know that "hey, we've got a WebOS device on the way too" is a great way to get people to stick around and wait.
blackberry is what i like
For the love of god come out with a vzw phone, i cannot stand the choices i have :(.
If you don't like your choices, speak with your wallet. Change carriers!
Palm must now have the strongest line up of devices that are not on the market.
The Palm folks will, market-share-wise, probably end up being like Apple to Apple's smartphone dominance and the strong Blackberry following ... Except if they come out with a mini-Pre/Eos for AT&T that substantially undercuts the price of the cheapest iPhone, market the hell out of it, and grab the more budget-minded crowd that hasn't gotten hooked by the crave-worthy iPhone interface, apps, coolness and popularity.
But if iPhone comes to Verizon, iPhone will dominate even more.
I wonder how much a rumored China-only CDMA iPhone would cost grey market US$ and if somebody will jailbreak it to work well (aside from no Visual Voicemail?) on Sprint, which is the best signal/coverage up here in Eureka, CA, where AT&T is a weak and spotty newcomer.
And anybody have predictions about what kind of developers and apps the PreOS/devices will attract besides, business/PDA?
VERIZON PLEASE!
Anyone know when this will be released could some at engadet confirm with your source an approximate release date
Sweet phone love it over my moto q
