Video iPhone to feature iMovie App?
Apple rumors seem especially rampant in this year's run-up to the Worldwide Developers Conference. With all the fuss focused upon a rumored 10-inch device that fits somewhere in between Apple's MacBooks and iPod touch, these poor ol' iPhone rumors just can't get any attention. Riiight. The latest has BusinessWeek offering further testimonial that video recording will be heavily featured in the summer release of the 3.0 firmware and presumed third generation iPhone. According to a source familiar with Apple's plans, the next iPhone will make shooting video super simple and feature an iMovie App that enables on-phone editing and uploads direct to YouTube. If true it would certainly be a welcomed update for first and second gen iPhone users and something we'd expect Apple to tout loudly as a major new feature on a new device or two sporting beefier cameras.

Apple has this uncanny ability to execute an idea. As much as you want to down-play that ability, it is what separates leaders from people who are highly intelligent but has no leadership ability. Ideas are a dime a dozen and only the execution of it matters.
Which is why I guess Nokia sorted out capture, record and upload over two years ago.
Nice feature but hardly new.
Who said anything about the feature being new? Nobody cares about who the first to implement an idea was except fanboys. I'm only concerned with who does it BETTER.
And as we've seen, Apple is really good at incubating ideas and then 1 upping everyone else. There's a reason why more people use the the Internet on iPhones than any other smart phone. There's a reason why the average person knows you can add apps to a smart phone.
Well since Nokia's is easy and quick it's going to have to be pretty good to beat it.
Like I've been predicting since iPhone 1G, considering Apple's track record and market position in the professional Video/Audio and Imaging/Design market, when they finally get down to implementing features of this sort on ANY of their products, it will be worth waiting for i.e. not a welded-on apology of a feature but synergistic with their design ideals of simplicity, elegance, coolness, fun and as always - ONE MORE THING...
Can't wait, will wait, can't wait, will...
What the hell are you talking about?
^^^^^
If that comment seriously went over your head, then go back to sleep.
I am sure that in a previous article on engadget it said that not all of the upgrade features would be available for previous models..are we sure about video recording on first gen?
Wow! iMovie on my iPhone! That makes me want to shit on my iSelf! LOL! ;)
Yeah, that's right, Apple. Feed all the iWankers "new" features in dribs and drabs and they'll iLove you for it! ;)
Err..
What?
Apple is on to something - geeks are outnumbers by non-geeks. They laugh all the way to the bank; while we point out how everything they could have been done using a older device and some hacks.
Shhhh! Don't write that! All the iWankers will come if they read it! LOL! ;)
"make shooting video super simple". Yeah, cause all those phones where you push a button or two and it starts recording are super difficult.
Pretty sure the "simple" part is regarding the entire process, from shooting to saving to editing to uploading to YouTube.
Oi Zak, you gonna record a video of you teabagging a guy with recon in halo 3? And then, maybe you could edit it with crappy effects to make it look like your guy is FARTING on him!! Then, maybe you could upload it to youtube, along with the 20,000 other kids who like halo!
That looks like an phone with a... um.. Dick ?.
My question is will they release a new iPod touch with a camera. Why not? And why not toss in GPS too?
Ugg, love Apple and my iPhone but I KNOW this is only going to be available on the new third generation phones. I'm sure of it. Otherwise they would have mentioned it at the iPhone OS 3.0 keynote. Anyone agree?
They didn't announce anything about video recording at the 3.0 announcement, which makes me think they did so intentionally because it will only work with a new iPhone model that they will announce for this summer... It would be a little ridiculous if this were the case, for there's already a video recorder homebrew app for jailbroken iPhones. They're not allowing MMS on the old iPhones with this 3.0 update even though they could technically do it, so I wouldn't put it past them to require us all to buy a new iPhone to get video recording even though the current iPhone can support it.
I might be wrong here, but I believe that most MMS apps actually use the data connection rather the the cell/voice radio to send an MMS.
again a could be (and probably am ) wrong about this.
But yeah, I can record video on my 3G and upload it youtube immediatley so I don't get what the deal is the we would need a newer device.
But whatever, in 6/7 years that i've owned a video recordsing capable handset, I've never sent a video MMS nor really wanted to so I don't particularly care much one way or the other.
This looks stupid as hell...
You realize that's not what it's going to look like, right? That's a 3rd party lens.
What a moronic way to add marginal functionality to the camera. Seriously... Apple fanboys can't just pick up a FlipHD or something?
Sure, because carrying two devices is so much better than carrying one device that can do both.
Also I'd like to point out that by saying video capture is moronic, you are directly in conflict with the other Apple haters who say that video capture is absolutely essential in a smartphone and everyone else in the universe has been doing it for the last 23 years.
You guys should all get together and get your stories straight so you don't contradict yourselves any more.
while video recording on a phone always has its simple purposes .... this is nothing revolutionary... i guess ill pat my buddy on back when he shows it off to me
I'm sorry, who was claiming it was revolutionary again? Boy you sure can't beat a good straw man argument, can you?
That is something truely the meaning of "neat".....
Well, i think this lens looks pretty cool. They should make their next iPhone like that.
Sure hope Vimeo is an option as well. I HATE YouTube.
cool gadget but I agree on the additional crappy YouTube videos- I want a compact video camera that produces 1080P 120Mhz action- I was memories that will last, not the pixelized version of American's lousiest home videos.
The only major improvement they can make on this space is the editing part. The recording and uploading has already been done really well by a couple of phones and it couldn't really get any simpler.
Aaaa sooo glad i have a Diamond.
Just lay back and see how the crowd pleaser fruit finally has "video" hahaha, funny stuff.
To those complaining about the quality of the current iphone camera, I agree its not the best camera in the world, but you can still take good images with it. Below is a link to a photographer's website with iphone images (none are photoshopped, all images come directly from the iphone).

i would like if if they were to compress the goddamn thing how to F*ck do u fit that thing in your pocket
When I saw it all I could think of was from Dr Who "EXTERMINATE"
I just want to know if the new hardware will have a front facing camera
I agree!!!
All these comments seem ridiculous. Why cant people just be happy that Apple continues to add features to their phone, and push the whole market forward? They never claimed to be the first one with this feature, and though it may not be the *best* camera out there, I am sure iPhone owners will appreciate having video capabilities in a new model.
Also, if Nokia's video capture/editing is so incredible, why hasnt it taken the market by storm? Never heard much about it before, then again, I wasnt dying for video on my phone so I never looked into it either.
Apple will make it seamless, plug-n-play, and "just another app" on the iphone, in addition to all the other things it already does well. The platform continues to mature.
