QNAP's TS-239 Pro Turbo NAS sets sail

We know you love a good NAS, so we're pleased to report that the crew over at QNAP Systems has announced the TS-239 Pro Turbo NAS, a dual (2TB) bay Atom-based device that sports a 1.6GHz Atom CPU, 1GB DDRII memory, a none-too-shabby 350MBit/s throughput, and iSCSI target service for SMB and SOHO users. Other features include hot-swappable locking disk trays, two (count 'em!) Giga LAN ports, three USB 2.0 ports, two eSATA ports, and support for Windows, Mac, Linux, and UNIX operating systems. You can expect the myriad of features the company usually provides in their network appliances, including thin provisioning, online RAID capacity expansion, AES 256-bit volume-based encryption, SMS and email alerts, bit.torrent and EMule downloads, FTP and web server support, database and content management, print server, XDove mail, and Surveillance Station for video monitoring and recording. We still don't know why Nas doesn't have a contract with the company, but we have high hopes that Jay-Z can help him broker some sort of spokesperson gig.

ZOMG FIRST
They also have the 439 and 639 models with 4 and 6 bays respectively.
They recently added official support for the 2TB Caviar Green as well, so you could run a 10TB Array with the 639 model.
My post = fail, getting two other people to be immature with me = win.
6 * 2 = 10?
Raid5 2Tb drives x 6 = 10TB because of 1 parity (or to be more specific 1 striped parity allocation across all drives) ie you lose one drive. Who would want 6x2Tb drives with no fault tolerance.
second
Don't forget: This thing will host SqueezeCenter.
third
*sigh*
I guess some second graders are taking a field trip on engadgets comment system today.
thanks for the lol.
i have the 439 ordered, these are rock solid great nas systems for the small business or home office. they are far and above pretty much any other nas at this price i've seen out there.
There are actually - and I do mean this - TOO MANY fucking features on this thing.
Whats a NAS
yeah its pretty much a pc with very on show drive bays. Hell its prettty much more powerful than my laptop i had 4 years ago!
Offical Mac OS support? I wonder if Apple is going to Kermit flail as much as they did with Pystar.
It doesn't run OSX, just supports a MAC connecting to it as a File Server.
Since Apple didnt sue Microsoft (that I am aware of anyway) when MS added the MAC File and Print service to Windows Server, I'm thinking QNAP is going to be fine.
QNAP's TS-239 Pro + 2*2TB quiet 5400rpm 3.5" drives+ mod lower rpm fan on chassis = Big WIN
curious... what are the 2 LAN ports for? is this a way to connect it to 2 physically separate networks?
nevermind... found it on the website...
Benefits of Dual Gigabit LAN Deployment
Failover Supported for Network Reliability
The dual LAN ports can be configured as failover which allows the NAS server to sustain the failure of one network port to provide continuous services.
Better Performance with Load Balancing
The two LAN ports of the NAS can be configured as load balancing mode for bandwidth aggregation to boost the file transfer speed (works with managed Ethernet switch with 802.3ad configured).
Multi-IP Setting for Serving Two Different Subnets
The NAS can be deployed with two IP settings for sharing among different workgroups in two different subnets.
I was hoping you could load a server build like clark connect and use the dual lan for a router setup.. oh well
350MBit/s throughput that's pretty weak
350 is the number of NetBench
Not really. I have a Vista machine at home I use for a media server and the best I could ever reading files from it was about 430Mbps. So 350 isn't bad. If you can find a desktop class machine and HDD that is able to pump out data faster than 500, I would love to know what components are being used.
And go out and compare to other NAS devices especially. Some of them are downright painful. Your lucky if you get 150Mbps
Does it support Time Machine backups? I read that you can point Time Machine to any SMB (CIFS) share, but wasn't sure if that's entirely accurate or not (never used Time Machine before).
This looks like a nice device. Anyone know price?
If this NAS is so awesome, why is that homeboy so sad?
Homeboy is rapper Nas, from New York. I believe his image was used as a Pun for the abbreviation of network-attached storage. It's no biggie that you didn't observe that initially.
I guess you could say QNAP just "Ethered" the competition...
Hazzah!
Because said individual is in need of one mic, wich is missing in the situation at the moment my good sir.
Looking forward to buy one. I have a synology which doesn't support my d-link wireless ipcams.
You should grow up CleaverBendover and stop trolling like a 5 year old . LOL!.
1GB DDR2...yesssssss.....
[2004]
these little nas boxes getting better and better, hard to choose http://sfeed.com/set/1215/
moar filez, moar diskz !
LOL@ putting a picture of Nas next to the NAS box for the 3rd time, this will send his Album Sales through the roof. Good cross promoting.
Opts for the TST-219 with marvell kirwood chip.
Yo I hope engadget didn't disrespect hip hop's greatest rapper
