Samsung's 850 PAVV plasma teases the 1-inch thick mark
The plasma industry may be teetering on the edge of certain doom (okay, so maybe that's exaggerating it... a little), but Samsung's still pushing the envelope. Over in South Korea, the company just outed its latest PDPs, the 850 PAVV lineup. Aside from being 40 percent more power efficient, 20 percent lighter and 120 percent more seductive than the prior generation, the new 50- and 58-inch sets also boast DLNA support, a USB 2.0 socket, DivX compatibility and a rather striking stand. The real kicker? The 29 millimeter depth, which equates to just over one inch thick for those who abhor the metric system. There's no word on when these beauties will hit the streets, but we're guessing Panasonic will be keenly interested in knowing.

The stand is quite awesome. Can I get one for my 4 series LCD?
That is an awesome stand, it involves a slab of wood and two Asian women to prop up the panel. I wish I had thought up that design.
Next year they'll improve the design to only one Asian woman holding it.
how is removing a hot korean model an improvement?
To improve it you would have to remove the wooden bench and add another korean girl to hold it up!
I will take 2 of them...oh...and the TV.
It's no use being unsarcastic on Engadget.
the best way is to leave the stand and have the two Korean models sitting next to you on the couch.
I'll take two and you can keep the plasma. With two K-hotties by my side, I won't have time to watch TV.
Now, that is a poor ad. I never really even noticed the big screen since I thought it was just a prop for the models.
"Samsung's 850 PAVV plasma teases the 1-inch think mark"
1 inch think?
Yo Darren, I hope you never make another typo again because all these people who've clearly never made typos in their lives will suddenly descend on you like that Asian model descended on me last night. AHHHHHHHH SNAP!
OH NO YOU DITN'T! DAYUUUUUMNNN!
I have never one inch thought before. To each his own I guess. Oh and nice TV.
@Kaitou Kid:
This has nothing to do with Darren. Bloggers making a typo is acceptable. But being as big a site as Engadget is and having such poor proofreading in place is not.
Meh... so what.
Typo's happen. Get over it folks.
Duke, I *think* I see what you did there...?
Ya like that one?
yaaar, what be a think mark? is it when you concentrate so hard on the show you're watching that you leave a stain on your sofa?
"1 inch think mark"
It's meant so to tell people it's 1 inch and for "Mark" to think
People who abhor the metric system need to be euthanised.
Beer comes in pints! If it ever changes, I shall destroy Belgium.
Seriously, what's wrong with that women's foot ?
Foot binding.
Six toes.
It's because of high-heels.
Koreans don't wear shoes in the house. So, the girls are bare-footed.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one that noticed that..... whew...
Oh baby!
I could go for some veggies right about now!
why so angry one who can't fart?

Why even bother attaching that stand when you can have a Samsung Auto Wall Mount linked to your choice of Universal Remote [Logitech's]? If you have enough for this next-gen-slim Plasma, then you can surely afford the extra dough to get the auto wall mount. Otherwise, If priced competitively, this can replace the dead Kuro in terms of features and style...till LaserVue and advanced LED LCD's go completely mainstream. [Still haven't spotted any Laser TV's]. Where the HELL are my AMOLED TV's huh? At least bust out some in small-scale terms like Laptops and Monitors...btw, My Cowon S9 32GB rocks!

This is the same exact 8 series plasma that is hitting US store shelves next week. In the US its the PN50B850 or PN58B850 there is also an 860 model. Check out Samsung's site or walk into their Store in Columbus Circle in NYC and see them for yourself. They are gorgeous and for $2300 Samsung sticker price, they should really compete for the top plasma of 2009.
I work at Sears Electronics and we've had the 50 inch 850 for about 2 weeks now.. Really impressive TV and the thickness is just unbelievable for a plasma.
So yeah... It's already out Engadget. Too bad no one shops at Sears lol
I got a 1" thick and when Asian girls hold it, it looks huge.
needle dick!! needle dick!!
Gaaatoorrraaaade!
I can't BELIEVE that nobody has bothered to comment on the big cucumber (which seems to have a preference for the model on the right).
Nothing like pics of Asian ladies to draw out the virgins to the comment section.
Go make a friend fellas.
I just saw the 50" model at the Best Buy store in Madison Heights Michigan on Saturday so I guess at least one has hit U.S. shores.
so is that girl on the right.
Finally a truly beautiful plasma in light blue color.
Who really cares about the tv depth?
As a licensed electrician i install my share outlets for wall mount tv's, and the tv's themselves.
The brackets keeps the tv off the wall a few inches anyway, so cutting 1.5 inches down to 1 inch means little to nothing.
It's more like just another reason to charge us more money.
And considering i ask everyone how much they payed for their tv (most are happy to tell you since everyone loves bragging about their great deal) and i'd say 90% of the tv's cost less than 2 grand, most are even under $1750.
I just see no market for tv's over 2 grand in this economy.
So i would rather buy this tv with all it's upgrades, and still have it be an inch thicker to save some money.
Aesthetics I guess... but, yeah, I agree overall. The depth really means nothing for the vast majority of people. You still have to put all your speakers and components somewhere and unless you're going to remodel and add an A/V closest, it doesn't mean shit if your TV 1" thick or 1' thick. And, hell, if you are going to add an A/V closet you could also add a cubby to hide the TV depth as well. But at least it's something to ooh and ahh over when your first get your new TV.
They make a custom mount as well that hangs this tv (and the led models) like a picture frame. All together, it's 1.8 inches off the wall which is thinner than 95% of all wall mounts alone, not to mention half the depth of a normal lcd or plasma tv.
Those girls deserve better than just an inch...
Well they are used to the standard already...
HA HA!! Awesomest multi-interpretory comment ever!
Those are some nice.... vegetables!
Seriously, I'll take them all! (the vegetables and the TV that is)
And you guys thought I was gonna talk about the girls!
what would improve that stand would be remove the girls clothe.
Which is better...Sony or Samsung?
