Sketchy roadmap has T-Mobile G2 for summer, G1 v2 and Samsung Houdini for fall?
Mysterious roadmaps chock-full of pretty pictures of fanciful handsets from the future have a tendency to appear every once in a while; on the surface, we have no particular reason to believe this one over any other, but we'd like to. According to TmoToday's supposed leak, the HTC-sourced G2 / Magic is expected this summer -- which seems like an incongruous statement considering that we're now expecting it to launch as the myTouch 3G. That would have us believing that the doc is either fake or out of date, and if it's the latter, that makes the other two scoops here still relevant and interesting: first up, a second version of the G1 is said to be launching in the fall (looking a heck of a lot like an Ocean 2, if you ask us). Next, we're seeing a Samsung "Houdini" in the same time frame that could definitely represent the US launch of the AWS-enabled i7500 -- especially since we've been expecting a Sammy Android set on T-Mobile anyhow. Whether this is all real or dead fake, it's definitely plausible, and we're figuring it probably comes pretty close to representing the carrier's Android plans for '09. Bring it on, guys.

You're a real hero:

I also don't get the excessive skepticism of the article. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the two ones under the box... even though I doubt one of them is a qwerty tegra android...

Your lightning-quick reflexes, wit, and dry humor are all to be commended, sir. Well played.

you just got owned by the zeigler!
Dr_Demento @ May 4th 2009 12:52PM
I just hope the G1v2 has a QWERTY keyboard, a 3.5mm headphone jack and an ounce of design savvy put into it. Then it'll be a real iPhone challenger...
Templarian @ May 4th 2009 1:03PM
Marketing wise the G2 is in no way against the iPhone, it's more on level with the instinct and other type of phones. It doesn't even have the advertising support as the other phones.
TheGM @ May 4th 2009 1:33PM
@Templarian
It's the third best selling smartphone OS, while on just one small carrier like T-Mobile.
1) BlackBerry
2) iPhone
3) Android
Tinu @ May 4th 2009 1:51PM
Why are they trying to confuse consumers? If G2 isn't an upgrade to G1, they should have simply used a different naming scheme and called it H1 perhaps. Now we will have things like G1v2 G2v2.

@Templarian
Are you saying that the HTC Magic is a dumbphone? Because you're wrong, dead wrong.
Templarian @ May 4th 2009 2:06PM
I actually think the HTC Magic, imo is an awesome phone. I was just trying to say that comparing it up to the iPhone it doesn't have the marketing support it needs.
(I really didn't word that right. I actually wish the HTC Magic would get some solid air time, that I feel G1 didn't get).

@Tinu
It's possible that they will call the G1v2 just "G1". In the same way the iPod Nano is always called "iPod Nano" even as it gets replaced by newer versions.

Interesting to see that the G1 V.2 continues the already established heritage of fugliness, and this is coming from an Android fan who is disappointed with HTC's designs.
TareX @ May 4th 2009 1:48PM
+1
HTC ruined Android with ugly hardware. Hopefully other manufacturers like Huawei will step in...
chefgon_ign @ May 4th 2009 2:02PM
I've had a G1 since it came out and I actually think it is quite attractive, though it admittedly doesn't photograph well.
damiaking @ May 4th 2009 12:54PM
they look nice ...

Wow, T-mobile seems to be the only one who's carrying android phones....verizon would never let a open source phone on their network, and AT&T has the iphone....
TheGM @ May 4th 2009 1:29PM
Verizon has a job listing for "Android Device Expert" and the Motorola Calgary is supposed to be the first Verizon Android device.

The IAC S2 (Tegra Android 1) slated for a Q3 release isn't on the list.
So maybe another carrier has this one.

Just updated my G1 with JF 1.5 and the new on screen keyboard is hard to use. I am glad that I have the physical keyboard as well. Android version 1.5 is much more polished and feels more like a release version than 1.0.
B3astofthe3ast @ May 4th 2009 1:31PM
Ugh, I'm about to root my g1 just for 1.5....come on tmobile, release it now!!!
Phineas J. Whoopie @ May 4th 2009 3:29PM
I installed JF 1.5 last weekend, and let me tell you ... it ROCKS.
Everything is so much faster and more responsive, it feels like a hardware upgrade. I'm amazed they squeezed that much performance out of the software. The non-rooting public are going to be amazed by the upgrade when this gets released.
Of course, if you install JF1.5 instead of TMobile's version you get multitouch, apps on the sd card, and the ability to tether. Ahh, to be open-source. :)
daan.scheerder @ May 4th 2009 3:24PM
The G1 v.2 is also made by samsung. Look at this slide leaked on a Dutch dealer event. http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/03/18/leaked-slide-reveals-samsung-going-big-with-touchphones-in-09/
Ike Skelton @ May 4th 2009 5:56PM
Does anyone know how T-Mobile does phone upgrades? Say I got my G1 last December. Come next December when the G2 and whatever else is supposed to be out, how does upgrading work? Do they give me any discounts, partial discount, etc? Not that I'm at all ready to give up my G1. So far nothing I've seen looks better (functionally or aesthetically) for me.
pekosROB @ May 5th 2009 3:21PM
Is there an exclusivity deal with T-Mob to be the only carrier in the US with an Android handset? I think it is at least..
Why can't we (as in mainstream public) have a choice of operating systems on a handset? Yeah yeah, I know, contracts and all that jazz prevent it. So much for freedom... of OS!
