EagleTec's NanoSac MicroSD Card reader makes mouse balls look big
We've got a thing for size, who doesn't? So check this USB 2.0 NanoSac MicroSD Card Reader from EagleTec. You can casually carry it around in any empty USB slot and then slip in your MicroSD/MicroSDHC card when you need a quick read/write. It's like EagleTec's Nano flash drive except with removable flash. For $18, we say why not. Hot NanoSac in the jack action after the break.

that is incredable. need one now
This is pretty old news =/ saw this like 2-3 months ago
FYI:
Nothing is new, under the sun.
What does that make you then?
Amazing...? lol
Jitters333 is true. These stuff are all over DX and they are selling for a buck w/ free shipping

@tom
These things are MUCH smaller than anything you linked to at DX. The only way to make anything smaller now is for them to be the same depth as the inside of a USB port, and you'd need a pull-cord to remove it afterwards.
@aMac EagleTec's has a hole to put a pull cord on and it needs it.
Please no NanoSac + "that's what she said" jokes.
Obligatory (and contrary):That's what she said!
hahaha....awwe.. balls
Is this the next big thing?
I just bought it for 16USD (just under 11GBP) delivered to UK.
Now to wait up to 20days...
The first thing I thought of when I read that headline was an old computer mouse ball.
I don't think that the memory card's meant to go in that part of the reader... ;)
I have been wrong before though.
I'm with you. The card appears to be inserted in the part that would go in the port.
logic would have me agree with you, but the etching on the top of the usb plug indicates otherwise....now i just don't know
Actually, it is. If you look at a typical USB plus, half of it is open (for the plug) and half blocked (so that it plugs in only one way). Well the blocked half is opened here to fit the MicroSD card, as seen in this model from Elecom:
http://www.akihabaranews.com/en//es/news-17574-MR-SMC03+Series%2C+Elecom’s+Latest+MicroSD+Micro+USB+Card+Reader.htm
For what it's worth though, Buffalo was the first to make these back in 2008 (though they weren't widely available outside Japan), and can be had right now for about US$6, or $15 incl a 2gb card.
Installing this in the USB at an angle could possibly break your card.
Small.......
That's what she said!
// i HAD to.
Well, I have one that's as small as this, doesn't have the metal part so it's a lot thinner, and the card is totally covered by it, protecting it in a pocket in case you want to use the card as a drive as I do.
it's a pretty good idea but most laptops comes with miniSD card readers built it and most microSD's come with a miniSD converter. For those of you who don't have a built in MiniSD reader, then it's very useful.

Yep, that is a much better alternative that the one in this blog. Mainly being because it has a key chain loop which keeps you from losing it. Oh, and the price. I have had one for over a year and it works great. I take it every where I go.
Or for us US buyers http://www.emartbuy.com/products.php?prodid=266 - thanks pricegrabber!
As previously stated.. Its the next big thing... Three months ago lol
@ niloc (Damn It Engadet)
Being a flea also makes mouse balls look big.

comes with the card!
*Imitates Peter Griffin's Laugh* Nanosac.
This is actually a pretty good idea though. Makes it harder to lose MicroSD cards.
the cap is a little big, will it cover the other usb port near by? I have a bluetooth dongle about this size.
Big of you to admit it.
which "mouse balls" are you referring to exactly?
just what i was thinking
Where is the card's reflection in the first pic?
The article headline is amazing!
Oh, and thanks djmcnz.
I think it depends on what kind of mouse balls you compare this to
On the picture with it inserted in the laptop. Is that a Macbook air with 2x USB ports? A photoshop perhaps to give it size context?
If this holds enough read/write speeds to do ReadyBoost, this'll be hot tits.
Now we just need that but instead of USB make it Micro-USB so we can plug it in the not-internally-expandable Palm Pre when it comes out!
First company to make a tiny plug/microSD card that plugs in to a Micro-USB directly will probably sell quite a few of them.
