Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 goes up for pre-order, for $1,499

Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GH1 certainly has a lot going for it. It's smaller than a DSLR, boasts some interchangeable lenses, and it's apparently more than up to the task when it comes to shooting video. Unfortunately, all of that doesn't come cheap, with the camera now up for pre-order from J&R for the not so low price of $1,499.99, which puts it well above a number of more-than-capable DSLRs. Of course, that price does include a 14-140mm lens, and it could come down slightly once some other retailers get in on the discounting action, but it's pretty clear that anyone simply looking for a low-cost alternative to a DSLR (or a low-cost DSLR, for that matter) will want to look elsewhere.

Nikon and Canon models in this price range don't have nearly as good of a video mode as on the GH1.
Obviously, few of you have small children and a desire to, both, take snapshots and video at the same event without lugging aroud two pieces of hardware and juggling them constantly. This camera is exactly what I've been waiting for. I think the price is very reasonable, considering the lens that comes with it. I suspect that it will be available for $200 less in short time. I'm in on this one. And I have a D90...
This is hot. Been waiting for the US price and I don't really see how anyone is shocked becuase the JPN price announced a while back was around $1500USD. If you just want to take photos then you are really missing the point of this camera and shouldn't be making comments. A major selling point of this camera is caputring HD video. So compare the whole package or don't compare at all. It is like comparing a Porsche to an F150 and then complaining that the Porsche is no good because it can't haul a jetski.
In Australia the RRP is $3,300 using google currency converter that is US$2462, US$1500 is AUS$2010. How the Hell can it be so much more expensive here? I'll be ordering it for the US when it comes out
