Printer beautifies eggs before eating (or throwing)

It used to be enough just to eat it, but it's becoming apparent that there are those who would like to elevate the most important meal of the day to the level of art. The Egg Drawer follows in the fine tradition of the Scan Toaster, placing pretty pictures (and perhaps, someday, product placement) on your humble continental breakfast. Sadly, there are no real details for this thing -- just a lonely Flickr photostream -- but we have plenty of time until next Easter to get the details banged out. Hit the read link for all the pretty pictures.

This is the modern version of the Deggorador by Dudley from the early '80s.
Very, very cool idea!
"PC LOAD EGG"
PC LOAD EGG?? What the Ef does that mean?
this could be really cool if it was turned into an automated tattoo machine. how sweet would it be if you could just scan in a design and not worry about getting "Moom" accidentally tattooed on your arm...
"Fatal error 0x09543"
I don't think it is the same machine featured here, but this site has some more info about this type of machine. It also seems that he teaches a course in which kids make these machines.
Also, check out his other CNC machines, they are awesome.

Is it just me or is there really no point of putting a design along side of an egg.
i think this is a cool concept.. imagine when u can use this to print on any spherical surface...on a vase, football with your custom logo.. eggciting..
The Faberge folks disagree with you.
The only practical use for this would be single or low-volume printing of eggs or other roundish items for individual consumers (ie via internet order). Larger-volume printing for advertising (as suggested in the article) would be accomplished MUCH more quickly and economically via a concave printing surface with an inked raised pattern over which the eggs are rolled. This is cool though.
Hey at least it's part of this nutritious breakfast!
(that and the cap'n crunch)
The only thing that's left is a 3D space scanner and this thing will be able to draw a picture on any surface.
I really wonder why these guys that have the hardware skills never work together with the guys who have software skills.
Oh, wait, they do. In Samsung, Nokia ect ect ect...
.....eggcellent
they have eggcelled here
Eggzactly, we live in eggciting times!
Doh, you beat me too it!
Yolks over.
I saw a very similar thing at Austin Dorkbot 2009:

Nicely designed, looks simple yet smart and capable.
"and perhaps, someday, product placement". Been done already.

CBS plans to advertise its fall lineup of television shows on 35 million eggs in a new promotional gimmick, The New York Times will report on Monday, RAW STORY has found.
"In September, CBS plans to start using a new place to advertise its fall lineup: your breakfast," writes David S. Joachim.
"The network plans to announce Monday that it will place laser imprints of its trademark eye insignia, as well as logos for some of its shows, on eggs -- 35 million of them," the Times article continues.
Printing on eggs has been possible for years - I remember them showing it on Tomorrow World, I think it was a machine entered for the Prince of Wales award.
That was like an immense bubblejet with a converyor belt though, while this looks more like an egg plotter.
Looks Useless....Get an Iphone instead...there's an app for this
Actually you want the ePhone. It's a phone in an egg. There's an app for just about eggything.
That's not a printer, it's a plotter.
"newegg"
Crazy thing is, that after his internet fame is over, he will not be able to discard this project. So he will have an egg plotter long after it is cool or neat. I always wonder what these guys houses look like, strewn with outdated inventions that serve no purpose. Maybe he puts it into a regular cycle/rotation and prints cartoon characters on his eggs based on when he recieved them. This one has scrooge mcduck - it's about to expire.
this title is frickin hilarious LMFAO
Can I put my nuts in it (one at a time)? Seems like it would be a lot less painful then getting a tattoo.
I can see the headlines now....
Woman sees face of Jesus in Egg!
I love Engadget, these guys just find the best captions and stories that don't make sense to the sober mind.
GOATSE EGG FTW!
This (or something similar) is VERY old news
In 2001, I saw one of these (almost exactly, in fact) made using a 1991 NEC laptop and a large array of stepper motors. It was build by some student at the Minnesota science museum. It seriously impressed me, as I was 10 at the time.
The downside: it leaves a seam, but thats ok - its still frickin amazing.
I'm completely sold over the "double happiness" motif.
