PSP mod adds mouse, a touch of class to Sony's beloved handheld

Not all input devices are created equal. Some of us long for that old coin-op console joystick every time we bring up GalagaREMIX on the iPhone, while others can't imagine engaging in a first person shooter without the aid of his or her trusty mouse. To that end, PSP hacker TokyoDrift (not his / her real name) has wired an old PS2 mouse into his portable's serial port, by way of an ATMEL ATmega8 chip-sporting breadboard. The various PSP buttons can be mapped to the mouse's buttons or scroll wheel, and scaling and sample rates are adjustable. We know there are plenty of you out there that can't wait to try this one out for yourself -- so hit the read link, peruse the forums, and get inspired.

what touchpad on the back demo by microsoft seems suitable for psp fps games
What?
I think he meant "that"
meaning the back touchscreen thing Microsoft demoed would be good for first person shooters on the psp
How cool would it be to remove the UMD, add a touchpad in its place (yup, on back, but attached) and maybe have a few memory card slots as well? Talk about an upgrade to the UMD!
Yes, a back touchpad would be awesome. Of course, just a front, 2nd joystick would be a huge improvement. Why does Sony keep holding out on us???
Actually, it might be possible to add a laptop touchpad BEHIND the UMD slot. I have one that's the perfect size, and there are ways to mod them to connect through PS2. If one could make a much smaller version of this converter, it'd be quite feasible, and the one I have would blend right in with the back ;)
That is pretty friggen sweet. Ugly as sin, But still very cool.
I wonder if one could get it working in some kinda wifi/ad-hoc mode? more convenient then...
If the PSP had some sort of mouse available for it (no hax!) I would have one right now.
Now all I need is a TV-OUT cable and the external controller mod and I got a mini gaming PC.
With no real good games.
Patriks7 - Ignorant troll.
PSP has more AAA+ titles than GBA and DS combined. Fact.
Or games like Burnout Dominator, God of War, Final Fantasy Crisis Core, GTA Vice City etc are not real? :)
Or perhaps you "forgot" that PSP can also play all PSX games.
the guy's a genius!!
I agree, the potential that this mod presents is farther reaching than just a simple mouse functions. A simple 3 button mouse would allow mapping of all buttons on the right hand side of the PSP:
Left Middle and Right click, and Scroll Up and Down can be mapped to the R Shoulder X Circle Triangle Square buttons perfectly, while still leaving the actual mouse cursor to work in place of a second analog stick/nub.
This setup is perfect for FPS. analog movement that controllers allow, while providing the non-springy aim that the mouse provides.
I can already see the controls for Half Life to be run on the PSP:
Analog nub = walking/running (close to center = walk, close to edge = run)
dpaddown = ducking(toggle)(reworked so that if the analog nub is at the "run" position, duck will temporarily be broken until analog nub is brought back to "walk" position. this allows a running jump duck to still be executed)
dpadright = use
dpadleft = reload
dpadup = flashlight
leftmouse = primary fire
right mouse = secondary fire
scroll up/down = prev/next weapon
middle click = last weapon
Thank you for clarifying that TokyoDrift is not this hacker's real name.
That is definitely the kind of real name I expect a real person to have so it is good to know that it is not a real name.
I will catalog this information away for any future contact I intend to have with this individual.
I wonder if this person has ever discovered the glory of a tripod?
Sony should definitely have done it before. This and adding a decent browser because the current one is pure crap.
