Android 1.5 coming to T-Mobile UK now, USA next week
And so it's finally confirmed: no consumers on un-hacked T-Mobile G1s in the US have this yet, but Android 1.5 and all its gooey, chocolatey Cupcake goodness will finally be hitting American units come late next week. Of course, you know how Android updates go -- they "roll" -- and not everyone is expected to get hooked up until the end of the month. Meanwhile, British G1 owners are getting updated as we speak -- so you might say they're getting back their American counterparts for launching the hardware afterwards. You know, what goes around, comes around.[Thanks, Shawn and David]
Update: The 1.5 update includes Picasa and YouTube uploads (you didn't forget about video capability, did you?) straight from your device, which is pretty cool.

Finally!!
Now to decide: HTC Magic or G1 w/cupcake???
this is a hard decision
Or Samsung i7500
Or Hero with huge chin.
Personally, I'm liking the look of the Magic, but I already have a G1. Quite happy with it though. Can't wait for this update.
Im real excited about this... i got an unlocked g1 on At&t and hopefully this will sway me fromgoing to the dark side (iphone).
so for those of us running a G1 on AT&T, will we still have the update rolled out the same? Its not triggered by a tmobile SMS or anything right?
i have me some cupcake , got it today mid-lecture started laughing , living in the uk has its perks.
The Magic is the G1 without a hardware keyboard, so I dont see how this is a hard choice...ok so the camera's a LITTLE better, but who cares?
"The Magic is the G1 without a hardware keyboard"
No you mean the magic is the G1 without the wobbly LCD screen ;)
Then again, YEAH it's about time for some cupcake. G1/G2/G3 FTW!
I'll take my cupcake with white frosting.
Joyous Day!
Not that I have a G1, looking forward to a Samsung i7500. But I am curious about 1.5 and to see if it's all it is cracked up to be. Not too many people are giving 1.5 reviews, hopefully with the large rollout there might be more out there for me to go on.
Wow this took forever but i cant wait till next week!
So true. I hope it doesn't take me well into the "rollout period" or whatever for me to get it like last update
I updated mine manually last time it came out officially so I didn't have to wait for it to get to my phone. I'm sure the same will be possible again once T-mobile releases it to the masses next week.
Happy, happy, joy, joy! Finally, we're getting video!
GIMME THE CUPCAKES NOW! OM NOM NOM NOM!
Ok no more caffeine today.
i promise you some delicious cupcake.
Hopefully this time the cupcake won't be a lie.
Too late, SIDEKICK LX 2009 FTWwwww
Smartphones are better than feature phones. Forget the sidekick.
uhh what? isnt android/google a US company? why the UK love?
Probably not a Google decicion, but a carrier one. So blame T-Mobile.
UK always gets screwed, we can give it to them this one time. lol.
(They already aren't getting the Pre till later lol)
The UK gets screwed with some stuff, but as far as it goes with mobile phones, the system over here seems much better than what you're getting in the USA.
Better phones, and they cost less. I bet in America they're still selling 0.3Megapixel cameraphones with 10MB memory, on a two-year agreement, $50 after rebates, or something stupid.
@wrs589
yep, pretty much.
"Now son, what do we say when someone gives us something?"
"Oh yeah... 'bout time!!!"
So, I bought a UK G1 and unlocked it (via code) to use in Portugal.
Does this qualify as a hacked unit or will I be getting the update?
everyone can get the update. No matter what you do to the phone.
I think this is the fifth time it's been released; at least this time there is an official announcement.
i'll be getting my g1 on monday, i can't wait. Time to fire up the SDK for some video app writing!
Well, well, well... now that we have Cupcake - a stable Android with onscreen keyboard - I say we port it to the iPhone. Any takers?
But why would you want to?
T-Mo's Android 1.5 page says that an alternate email is needed when creating a new Gmail account. Anyone know what this means?
IDK but I hope they fix that email issues that G1 lack of.
why does the UK get this before the US? It doesn't make sense
T Mobile is originally UK based...dats all I got.
I thought they were based in Germany?
Smaller network?
My friend has the update, hoping to get mine soon...
at last. the cupcake is no longer a lie :)
The cake isn't a lie.
Yes, I am a douchebag for going there.
HAHA, you suckers. I'm booting into cupcake as we speak, and I live right here in Chicago :P
Don't know about you, but I've been using cupcake for over 2 weeks now on my G1 thanks to HTC Magic.
Who's the sucker now?
I've been to the future and my phone is running the 5.0 build, plus my phone gives me handjob, now that is what I call an update...
Iv already had it for a few days. Yay for root access and Jesus Freak!
Praise da lawd!!!!
when does the magic come to the us? my contract expires on the 17th
oh joy.
It looks like I got my G1 just in time!
I am so excited that I'm going to start Dancing.
Finally! Im gonna buy cupcakes for next week. So that when its updating, ill be eating cupcakes!
Wow that was close. I was 3 days from going into T Mobile and paying the fee to break my contract. I hate this damn phone. After describing what was going on with my G1 they are under the impression I have faulty radios (But both BT AND cell?) they are sending a new phone out that I should get mid next week. We'll see. I'll give TM another chance with new hardware and 1.5. All I know is bringing up the damn desktop better be faster in 1.5. Occasionally it takes 7-12 seconds to pull it up and on Win Mobile its just BAM...there. Plus I can sometimes confuse the OS lock the screen then unlock it when I remembered I wanted to do something and immediately unlock it, and it sometimes takes 20 seconds to unlock. Then there are the webpage hangs, the BT drops, etc. This better fix it all.
Sounds like you've got a faulty phone as my G1 does non of these things. The 1.5 update should only bring improvements, not flat out fixes since there aren't too many things to fix anyway.
Yep, your G1 is broken, mine works like a dream...
I agree with T-Mobile, you got a bum phone. I've had one since the day it launched and I have never experienced any of those issues. If I was doing something really processor intensive, the home screen might take up to four seconds to appear, but that's the only thing I've ever seen that's even remotely close to what you're describing. I use the browser a lot and it has literally never crashed, ever.
Not really sure how or why, but the 1.5 update got pushed to my phone about 2 weeks ago. I was a little shocked but updated it and seems to be working well. Anyone have an explanation?
Developer phone? Or maybe you're running a custom ADP firmware on your G1? Did you buy it used?
yawn...been running 1.5 on my G1 for a few weeks now. Like someone else said, "yay for root!"
Awwwww Skeet Skeet Skeet Skeet Skeet Skeet!!
Bout damn time! I'm gonna eat so many cupcakes, I'm going to need some insulin!!!
I have the update and all I want to say to you iphone fan boys is that the onscreen keyboard is a million miles better than that of the iphone. I have an ipod touch with the same functionality before you say that I can't compare. I have fat fingers (proper man hands) and rarely make a mistake whereas on my ipod i can't write a sentence without many mistakes. Props to Google for being clever. Fair enough the hardware might not be all that at first, but now I have this update, it makes the hardware seem much more usable. Its faster and cleaner and the apps are getting better and better. The fact I don't have to use itunes to update a phone is the big winner hear. OTA is the way forward and being stuck with firmware after firmware updates on the iphone is ridiculous. This isn't me saying I don't like the iphone, I do. Quite a lot actually, but there are reasons I have a G1 and that is Gmail, Google contacts and Google Calendar which are the most important things I use on a daily basis.
Oh and I'm in the UK just if you were wondering.
*here
UK first? Maybe we made a mistake and this update is actually called "Crumpet"
I like my G1 better than my T Mobile Wing (yea, I know, lousy comparison). But, I have a hardware problem. I blew the speaker out on the phone playing a YouTube video (I hate Susan Boyle and the co-worker who borrowed my phone to watch her now). As a result, I have to deal with T Mobile's subpar customer service experience with their insurance company. I've been on the phone with someone in Mumbai with a fake Southern accent trying to fix my phone OTA, and they keep telling me to do a reset.
At least I have my old Wing in a pinch.
LOL thats great.. so they punish all the people who DIDNT mod the phone... cause the ones who did.. (ME) have that shit allready :) but better.
I got the cupcake update in Germany this morning. Looks good so far...
Anyone else not have this still?
