iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 now available

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
Update: We can confirm that MMS "support" can no longer be turned on in Settings (in quotes because we could never get it working in previous betas anyhow), and we're hearing that trickery that allowed tethering to be enabled with the previous iTunes 8.2 build has been patched. Aww, you're no fun, Apple... thanks, Rene!

I'm hearing that MMS is gone from this release...
Blame them:

Dont shoot the messenger!
its working fine on mine
Yeah. Using your first name is much more original and exciting!
No.
@ Greg... please explain the different levels where Eminemdrdre00's user name is wrong.
You all could have look into it before you low ranked the dude, he's right.
http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2009/05/06/iphone-30-beta-5-mms-hidden-att-devs/
Wow, he got lowest ranked but he was right. I have no MMS anymore.
No, it's just that the firmware checks if you have MMS on your plan, which is disabled by all AT&T iPhone users by default. That's why it still works for some; they had MMS enabled on AT&Ts side for whatever reason.
MMS not actually work in DK on TDC's network! It's a first!
DAMN!
can't whait to know how good it'll be ....
Fail.
supprise
balls!
I am on ATT and I still have MMS and it works with the new beta.
and tethering?
ya, I have beta4 and tehtering works. is tethering really gone?
no need for me to use beta 5. I'm sticking with beta 4...!
What are your MMS settings?
I got MMS to turn on in beta 5 but I had to upload a carrier settings file after updating that I had working beta 3. Due to "can not activate cellular" error, I restored the carrier file to it's original settings.
Shilo
so there is no advantage updating my iTunes if I don't have an iPhone?
If you don't have an iPhone, I assume you don't have an iPhone developer account, so you can't update iTunes anyway. These are betas for developers to begin working with iPhone OS 3.0.
Yes the Internet Tethering option is still available under the Network option.
Is a) this still there and b) Does it work on Windows. I'm looking at getting a new iPhone later in the year, but it MUST be able to be tethered for me to even consider the phone as its a must-have for me.
nope.
I wonder what this beta has hidden it it...
A f*cking unicorn, obviously.
Ah! Need torrent!
I thought you still needed to be in the dev team to use 3.0 beta even with torrents
The problem I have with the download is that it logs you out after a day or so, and you can't continue (**) and on my crap connection it takes more than that to download. And I have connection interruptions ever 20 minutes or so. So a torrent is much better, I can just leave it running and eventually it will finish.
(**) You can actually continue, here's how: Download the file. Once it's stopped, try continue. If that doesn't work, go to the website and start downloading it again, but stop immediately once the second download has started. Then go back to the old partially downloaded file and try to continue - now it works. Took me too long to figure out though.... and a torrent is still better.
blood
need link to torrent to download please!! anyone! thank you!
Only update is the StoreKit classes (SKPaymentQueue.h, SKPaymentTransaction.h) which allows in-app purchasing.
I wonder why they stopped the bi-weekly update? Release is near?
My bets:
* Announce a few more features from iphone 3.0 that are not in the betas at WWDC (video capture, voice dialing)
* Announce release date for 3.0
* Probably will be released when the next iphone ships
MMS is indeed turned off in this release. No option available in the settings panel at all.
do you have a link for a torrent to download?
Did you do a clean install or restore from backup? I restored from backup and MMS is still there for me.
re-update your carrier package
is the pre-release of itunes the same exact version needed last time or do I need an updated version of the pre-release?
The pre-release iTunes version for beta 4 was 8.2.0.10 and for beta 5 it is 8.2.0.13. I just went ahead and installed the newer iTunes.
does anyone know if it matters? cuz i dont have the link to download the new version OR the new build yet, and its a pain to get both
There's no difference in the iTunes 8.2 beta, the one I use for the 3.0 beta 4 worked fine for beta 5! Here's a site that has ALL beta's (it will be updated as more are released) for All devices and the iTunes beta for Mac and Windows: http://imodzone.net/download/
Good Luck!
beta 6!
breaking? really?
I don't think so,,, I have beta 4 installed and I don't think a week's work really makes that much of a difference,, maybe wait two more days and install beta 6 one shot
MMS is indeed missing and tethering is no-where to be found. At least for me.
Look in settings, general, network and at least on mine you get internet tethering.
sweet - ran my phone through the washing machine tonight! New iPhone and software can't come quickly enough for me. :-/ (June, not July, please....)
I can't wait for this.
you'll need to update your carrier settings to activate tethering and mms...
babble
boobies!
If you got the tethering to work before beta 5, it will work if you restore from backup. Works for me. I never had MMS working before beta 5, actually when I got tethering to work, I ended up disabling the MMS (the icon did not appear in the text box, but it was turned 'on' in settings). After updating to beta 5, I ended up with the same result.
Does anyone know why I only sometimes have to do a complete restore when updating? I know beta 1, 3 and 5 so far have all made me do a complete restore from backup but beta's 2 and 4 both updated without wiping all the data..
hold the (option) key on your keyboard while pressing (check for update) on iTunes, locate the beta5 firmware file, and your iphone will update without having to erase any of your files/settings,,,
I did that for all of the betas so far on my iphone and it worked every single time,,, just don't press the restore,,, keep it as (option=>check for update)
aaand the boobies comment doesn't get low ranked.

"We can confirm that MMS "support" can no longer be turned on in Settings (in quotes because we could never get it working in previous betas anyhow), and we're hearing that trickery that allowed tethering to be enabled with the previous iTunes 8.2 build has been patched."
Does this mean MMS is always turned on, or is it removed completely? If the latter, why?
Also, I never had to do any tricks besides installing a modified ipcc file to get tethering to work with beta 4. What tricks are you referring to?
Any *good* news about this update, like new useful features?
mms works fine for me...on 3.0b3
If you need help getting your UDID activated on a developers account i found the website that i linked to my name above actually found them in facebook, just click on my name to go there. They had me up and running in no time and i now have complete access to their Apple developers account with my own user ID and password. It was worth it, just my 2 cents for anyone who is in the same boat i was.

New feature found - mail icon on podcasts now works. When you click it opens a new email with a link to the podcast some 'Check out this podcast' text
This definately wasn't working for me in beta 4!
Anything change?
If so, be sure to update http://interactiveiphone.com
I have a 1st gen iPhone and I'm getting Error Code 1012 when I try to update or restore. I've updated iTunes and everything but my iPhone is still stuck on the pink screen of death. Anyone else have this problem or know what to do?
DFU mode and restore. Only way to get past that. Once you've restored you can upgrade to Beta 5 again.
...Did you try and Jailbreak or something?
Just try putting the iPhone in DFU mode and try a full restore. Make sure you are a member of the Development team so you can activate. If you are not, email me and I will add you for $5
I have my own developer account =). I'm trying the DFU method right now.
DFU method didn't work. Does anyone have a link to the Beta 4 software? I stupidly deleted my copy...
Got my 3G to work fine, no MMS (no celluar data network setting). I got the PSOD on when doing my 2G. I spent 2 hours trying to restore it via every method available online, but no luck. Finally, I reinstall the latest version of iTunes, put the phone in DFU, and was able to restore it back to 2.2.1.
How did you fix your iPhone? I have a 1st generation phone as well, have tried updating, but still have the pink screen. The end of the update log is as follows. Any suggestions for how to fix this? Can I go back to 2.2.1 first and then update the new beta?

Have the same problem on my iphone 1st gen. I'm in DFU, i begin to restore, but it hungs up on the process "preparing iphone for restore". Then the iphone reboots in recovery mode with the pink screen, and windows tells me that the usb device is not recognized. Any idea?
I'm about to install it as we speak...
I doubt it will be anything cool. I will update this when I'm done and let you know.
I REALLY hope this fixes this huge bug I've been having with the previous build. Every time I'd change songs there would be this 45 second delay where the screen freezes. It's an extremely obnoxious bug, especially because its next to impossible to downgrade the newer OS builds.
It's easy to downgrade to 2.2.1 - just uninstall iTunes 8.2, install iTunes 8.1, install 2.21 and use WinPwn to reset and jailbreak. iTunes will then activate your phone.....
So the MMS on/off is still there and of course you still can't use it. (I think it's blocked in the US)
The Apps that were crashing still are and I really see nothing new.
You can configure MMS by going to: Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network
Then you have to fill the required info there.
configure what? what required info?
I have a link to the 4 software..
MMS is ALWAYS ON now! That's why the user unfriendly MMS switch has disappeared. Why would any user turn it off when they have MMS functionality?
Besides, THE MMS SETTINGS CAN NOW BE FOUND IN THE NETWORK SETTINGS TOGETHER WITH YOUR APN SETTINGS. This makes sense. Please update the article and correct it
I just moved and got the net up and running to and got beta 4. Is there any reason to upgrade from to 5?
How do I enable multitasking?
when will this 3.0 be finished i would really love to have it
If you want MMS to work on your iphone, Put in an ATT sim card that has a normal "MMS plan form another non-iphone" you will be able to send and receive MMS
I have Beta 5 and I still have the MMS and tethering option.

That is exactly what i was looking for and they even helped me recover my UDID since i tried to upgrade without getting listed on an account first. Give them a look if you want.

MMS on 0.3 beta 5 will work for Apple but not for windows at least not this time. Do not try to call at&t and ask them to unable the function either as they will refuse... Hopefully beta 6 will have MMS for windows.
Hey I found this site where they have available iPhone 3.0 Developer Slots available!!
www.iPhoneDevSlots.com
Is anyone here a developer that would like to help a fellow out?
You all should do a little research before u go and start rumors. I just spoke with one of the higher ups at the apple dev. center. The reason mms and tethering were removed from the beta 5 is because all you loons were using it as your regular phone, instead of using it to actually develop apps. MMS and tethering will be available in the final release of the 3.0 OS. There is a total of 8 betas for the 3.0 os. Stop freaking out.
Would someone tell me if Audiobooks now work on BETA 5?
