Nokia E75 NAM hits the US flagship stores
If you're up for a trip to New York or Chicago (both are lovely this time of year), you now have a shot at scoring the North American version of Nokia's landscape QWERTY slider, the E75. Of course, "scoring" costs you $529.99 in this case -- and you can only get it in black right now -- but if you spend a lot of time in the seedier parts of either of these towns, the concept of scoring for several hundred dollars should be very familiar.

This or the n97?
Do people even buy Nokia's anymore? What service are they even on?
sprint. but yea, i agree, nokia's were bomb back in the 90s when cell phones were just rolling out without color screens and cameras and mp3 players and such. now all theyve got going for them is PTT shit. but who cares about that.
nokias are mostly european.
I have a E90 and I like it a lot. It has, like every phone I've had, a few things I'd like to be factory standard on it, but that can pretty much all be solved with 3d party apps.
This phone looks nice, but doesn't really have the internals that makes me want to change phones. I guess the people that'll pick this up probably don't need those things though.
What? Are you Crazy? Live under a rock? Hell yea people buy them, they are super functional. I own a e71 and N79, love em both. No carrier BS either.
Yeah, Nokia was the shit back in the 90's. So was Motorola. Now both are pretty much not seen today. It's lot's of other companies now.
Nokia's are still the number one selling smartphone in most of the rest of the world.
US carriers have not really jumped at them, except for the lower end (but good quality) candy bar basic phones. Not sure why, they still make excellent hardware, and S60 is pretty good, it's actually extremely fast and powerful, just not as graphically stunning as other smartphones. But expect to see S60 take off, as Nokia bought it and created a consortium to develop it with a lot of other players.
Also, Nokia simply hasn't put a lot of effort in marketing / sales here. They have most of the globe covered, so it's not a huge deal for them to not get to the top of the US market.
I just wish they had a flagship store in L.A. :(
Nokia is like soccer. Wildly popular around the world but puzzling to most Americans.
a lot of people buy Nokias in europe, it's like iPhones and Blackberries, just the other way round. here practically nobody has an iPhone or BB while i have heard they are both quite popular in the US.
LOL - I see what you did there...
Prostitutes.
Yeah, I just read it and still have no clue how you went from buying a cell phone to prostitution in a single sentence...but nice work. You should write for family guy...making the unfunny funny by pulling in something completely irrelevant at the right time.
It's because of the line "but if you spend a lot of time in the seedier parts of either of these towns, the concept of scoring for several hundred dollars should be very familiar."
Get it? Paying for the naughty stuff? Hence, prostitute.
That and the fact that QWERTY slider is the name of a move done by hookers where they show off their typing skills.
The device looks sick!
I've been playing with a pre-production E75 NAM for a bit over a week - it's a solid classic high-end Nokia: http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/category/e75/
Yeah, I wouldn't say Chicago is lovely this time of year yet. Rainy and barely hitting the 70's. Fingers crossed that summer FINALLY arrives before people start rioting in the streets over shitty weather.
Who am I kidding, people are practically doing that already over the ridiculous parking meters.
Ohhh...is it that bad in Chicago? I'm going there on vacation next week...damn it.
@ John Doe
Bring an umbrella along mate!
if it gets as cheap as the e71 is running i'll upgrade from my e71-2.
I have the e71, and I have tested 75 for a while now. IMO, not worth the price difference. They are both amazing phones, but unless you are really REALLY into this form factor, there is no reason to get this instead of e71.
ME LUP U LONG TIMEEEE....
N97 FTW
Why do most (90%) of Nokia's phones look the same?
The keyboard looks awful. No spacing between keys? A giant divider down the middle? Plus the d-button is the same POS from the E71 as well - utterly unusable.
Coming to a store near you....for $499. Seriously, why are these phones so expensive?
The same could be said for no contract 3g iPhones, but people still buy them.
Why? No contract, completely unlocked, unsubsidized.
A similar iPhone from AT&T costs $599 for the 8GB model and $699 for the 16GB, according to http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/18/atandt-to-offer-unsubsidized-iphone-3g-with-no-commitment-required/ -- Now you know how much that 2-year contract signing is worth to them.
But here's the thing: that iPhone will still technically be LOCKED TO AT&T. You'll have to "illegally" unlock it to use it on another GSM network.
I don't know why cell phone makess bother having a slider when the front screen is tiny as hell. They need to stop cluttering the front, make it whatever you got to do touchscreen AND have a slider keyboad. If I buy a phone with a keyboard...it better damn well have a large screen...
Palm Pre much? ;-)
Back when I was in 'NAM, I had to kill a guy for his cell phone....
The horror... the horror...
Mid to high end Nokia S60 smartphones are hot in Europe and Asia. And, S60 is a great smartphone OS. Why the Americans haven't picked up on them I have no idea. Perhaps Nokia doesn't market themselves heavily in the US.
$530 is about the right price for a smartphone of this calibre. So, it's really not expensive when one thinks about it.
Here's a bunch of reviews if anyone's interested:

Not expensive? $500?
Don't get me wrong: I love this phone. I was considering getting it when it came out over here. (The other contender was a Palm Centro.)
But for $500? No thanks.
I can get an HTC 5800 (essentially the same phone), although it has crappy WinMo 6.1, for $99 + an activation fee on Pay as you Go in Canada right now (on Bell). Basically the same phone - but on CDMA, with WinMo, and $350 cheaper.
For GSM, you can get an unlocked Palm Centro for $199 these days.
As much as I love Symbian, I'm not willing to pay an extra $300 for it.
So PLEASE don't try to tell me that this phone actually has a value of $500, stainless steel back or not.
Now off to buy an E63 NAM... Better phone for $250 cheaper... ;-)

"The keyboard looks awful. No spacing between keys? A giant divider down the middle? Plus the d-button is the same POS from the E71 as well - utterly unusable."
The reason that NOKIA build their keypads like that is due to the huge following that text messaging (or SMSing) has outside of the USA. When you consider that countries such as the Philippines sends an estimated 2 BILLION text messages per day (SMART: 1.2 billion, GLOBE: 500 million & SUN:200 million, stats as of Oct 2008). It makes texting using T9 (predictive text) a lot faster, trust me!
I absolutely LOVE you clowns who forget to consider that phones with this level of functionality generally sell for $300-$600 WITHOUT A CONTRACT. Better still, they are unlocked.
Had anyone else here ever noticed that when you ask someone who bxxxxhes about phone prices being this high what carrier they have, it is often a CDMA provider? Or an iPhone dork?
These are the types of trolls who think the PHONE is a ripoff and that a CONTRACT (read: 24-month indemnity waiver that costs $200+) is somehow a better value.
Anyhow, read your damn provider's price tags to see how much your precious BB Storm REALLY costs.
Me? Fortunately, I live in Dayton, OH where I just got my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (MSRP: $399) for $149 WITHOUT A CONTRACT. Cincinnati Bell understands how valuable freedom of choice truly is.
