SmartQ 7 is an Internet Tablet with dedicated FN
Oh look, another 7-inch device with an identity crisis. Too big to be called a smartphone, definitely not a netbook, it must be a MID, UMPC, or maybe a PMP. Wait, we see it now, the SmartQ 7 aspires to be an "Internet Tablet." Good, because its WVGA (800ish x 480 pixel) resolution is the same as Toshiba's 4.1-inch TG01 (to name just one smaller device) only stretched across a 7-inch touchscreen display -- not exactly ideal for video in 2009. The SmartQ 7 runs an unspecified Linux distro with specs that include WiFi, a USB-host mode, stereo speakers, and up to 2-days of music off a single charge to its 4500mAh Li-Poly battery. More importantly, there's a dedicated FN button along the top for instant fun. No launch date or price but we've got the backside, front, after the break.

MID is just about right.
Mobile Internet Device (MID) or Internet Tablet it does not matter. They could have made this a bit faster i mean at least put a CC1600 processor in there for some 720P on its seven inch screen.
If the Onda PMP's can do it i am sure this thing should be able to.... but it still looks pretty cool.
does it run crisis?
Grow up, will you?
and learn to spell correctly.
@Arke
What are you talking about? Crisis is spelled Crisis.
@apple nerd without a cause
I assume you mean the crisis flash game(www.2dplay.com/flash-crisis/flash-crisis-play.htm), right?
Good question... I doubt it will have full flash support, but you can always hope.
Ummm, no, it's spelled Crysis.
http://games.ea.com/crysis/index.jsp
Anyway, hopefully this thing isn't running a low power ARM processor again. A Cortex-A8 series at 800MHz or ARM11 at 1GHz should suffice if they plan on using Ubuntu again (although optimization is still a necessity).
Crysis is spelled Crysis, however Crisis is spelled Crisis. What's so unclear about that?
Semantics, semantics, you guys are arguing semantics! :)
The use I can think for this thing is and advanced bedside clock... but it wouldn't need such a huge battery for that.
I doubt it has the full works of flash/java/silverlight etc etc.
I doubt typing on it would be fun.
But could be a fun gadget to those who are lazy (and rich) enough to want something more powerful than their phone (well I'd prefer my g1, yay cupcake at last) but smaller than a netbook.
If it's running Linux why wouldn't it have the "full works"?
Because to me it just seems closer to a (very) oversized ipod touch than a netbook.. (long battery life, screen taking up most of the device, lack of buttons, probably pretty locked down hardware wise - not that ud need to change anything anyway)
Some light versions of linux won't run flash (games) like... well I havn't looked in ages, I'm sure puppy linux couldn't, and android which is vagely linux can't.
Sorry for the grammatical and spelling errors in my last post, I guess I'm still asleep.
You're correct, in that, unless it runs some version of Windows, it's just another toy. None of these MID's are good for anything unless they run XP. I've had two versions of the Nokia tablet, and I can attest to this inescapable FACT. I know the Mac and Linux fan boys will be frothing at the mouth for such a blasphemous statement, but only because it's so completely true.
XP or go home.
Gotta REALLY important question for u guys...
So I just traded in my Mazda RX-8 for a 2006 Cadillac CTS-V and wanted to put a new stereo in it. Looked at those Panasonic and Alpine motorized in-dash DVD players but their touchscreen responsive-ness and price were just horrible. So I dove into the whole Internet media and MID market and right now Archos's 5 &7 series Internet-Media Tablets are the best cuz they support almost all the good file formats/codecs especially h.264 and FLAC and I wanna output such things [along with music videos] to 2 headrest monitors in the back seats. Archos has a couple docks with video [S-Video/Component/HDMI] out capabilities but I also want to control the volume and next/previous track buttons on the steering wheel. How the HELL would I go about doing this? I know Bluetooth A2DP has a profile where u can control playback with a remote but I'm not 2 sure. I definitely wanna go with a setup like this cuz not only can I use the Archos as a GPS and Audio/Video source in the car, but I can use it outta the car as an Internet Media Tablet. Is there any other setup you guys have in your car? Should I wait for some other MID's like such to come into the mainstream market or what? Lemme know-Thanks.
BTW, LAKERS in '09. LeBRon won the MVP this year but in the last 6 years, the MVP didn't win the title including last years MVP-Bryant's loss to the Celts last year...but Kobe's lookin for the FINALS MVP!
why the hell would you trade a Mazda RX-8 in for a 2006 Cadillac CTS-V??
What idiot would trade an RX8 for some Cadillac pos ?!
I don't know much about cars, but an RX-8 for a Cadillac? Hahhahahaha
Also, Lakers suck.
lol you just got ultimately pwned by tits and a super hobo
are all of you idiots serious? who wouldn't trade an rx-8 for a cts-v. the cts-v is an absolute monster, a 4-door corvette zr-1(almost) with supreme luxury. an rx-8 is just a crappy little ricer with a rotary engine, abysmal fuel mileage and an engine you have to rev way too high to get any power. the cts-v you just think about pressing the pedal and you're off like a rocket.
These replies are further proof that it's mostly stupid kids posting on this website. EnGadget's fan base has been slipping for years now. Pretty soon it's just going to be grunts and butt jokes.
I'm pretty sure trading in an RX-8 for a Cadillac is called "growing up."
touche
it wont play crysis?
NO
call me stupid but whats a dedicated FN button?
i think FN refers to Function
but why is important?
I don't have a clue.
With most MIDs and Smartphones with keyboards (Like my TyTN II), there's a Fn (Function of course) button to add extra functions to the same button.
Just a random example, say you press Fn, then Q, you'd get a 1.
But since this doesn't have a keyboard, I have no idea what it's good for...
ahh... I thought FN stood for Fashion News, what with the picture of Vogue and all. FunctioN makes a lot more sense.
Good 3d render.
real pics or fail.
Not ideal for video? What resolution would you have in a portable device that you would call "ideal for 2009"?
I was thinking just this. "800ish x 480 pixel" is MORE than enough for viewing videos on a screen that size, it's not like you need to hold it at nose length from your eyes.
FN ?
What does it mean ?
(yeah I'm serious, in French it means Front National which is basically your republican party's most conservative wing)
SmartQ already released the Q5 with a 4.3" 800x480 screen. This is their idea of a follow-up. Chinese manufacturers have all been releasing PMPs with 4.3", 5.0" and 7.0" screens at identical 800x480 resolutions, so no surprise on the choice of screen there. What is surprising is that SmartQ is starting to resemble all those other manufacturers. Previously, SmartQ took it pretty slow, releasing one product and then working on ironing out the firmware. Now they seem to be tossing off products as fast as other manufacturers while the Q5 is still a work in progress. There was a firmware update promised for the end of April that has yet to materialize and no English version as of yet.
I don't like small displays and I don't like bulky devices, so I welcome the idea of a large screen without a keyboard that gives me access to a variety of functions. I would primarily want it for accessing the local network such as at home or at work. Give me a lightweight 15" 1080p device with a color e-paper touch display and no keyboard where I can watch videos, listen to music, read books, surf the web, and use my phone. To continue the wishlist would involve a device that rolls up or folds up, either when not in use or so that it could be used with a smaller display.
I'm not holding my breath.
You're not? That's a shame.
Why on Earth could you possibly need 1080p on a 15" screen?
Where can one buy this and the SmartQ 5 in the USA or will ship to the USA?
no camera? seriously?
it is same as the Q5 , onlt different screen size
same hardware and system
