Acer says US smartphones won't arrive until 2010

Acer has been busy showing off one smartphone after the other over the past few months, and making promises about at least one Android-based device, but it now looks like folks in the US will have to wait a bit longer than expected to actually get their hands on 'em. While complete details are a bit light, according to Gearlog, the phones are being held up as a result of some snags with US carriers, and the first phones now likely won't make their debut until some unspecified point in 2010. Presumably, that means the phones are still on track for a release overseas this year, and there's no doubt at least a slight chance that the situation could change over here before the year is out.

Update: That "slight chance" just got a little greater. Acer has told SlashGear that a fourth-quarter 2009 release isn't out of the question; we're figuring it probably depends more on how carrier relationships work out than anything else.

is not like i was crazy for one of this anyway
cough cough cough.
Acer can release the crap device right now for the same price as the LG KP500 (3 inch touchscreen and like costs nothing) and i still will not buy it.
They do look pretty sweet, but with Sony, Apple, Motorola, HTC, Nokia, Palm, Blackberry and everyone else, I'll be contented will 2010
"I'll be contented will 2010." I'm not sure that sense made.
"holy_moly112"
I'm not sure THAT makes sense! Oh, snap!
will twill kill bill hill mill gill sill thrill dill pill still till
Is it quadband and unlocked? if so, i see no snag, but it on the website for sale, I will buy it
Acer says not until 2010 in US ... US says "who cares?"
Their offerings were pretty bland and generic anyway so i dont think people will be jumping up and down in rage anytime soon.
It's too bad all cell phones are beginning to look the same.
Once you reach "big screen and a few buttons" there's nowhere else to go!
I would concur, but for an anomaly known as Pre.
Yea... sliders can look different... but full touchscreen phones will just be a slab of plastic or glass.
True enough.
Not the pomegranate phone!

Well, considering the US wireless market is such a backward provider-locking market, I can see it's very hard for a Acer to jump in. US consumers prefer to pay and be gouged for a locked cellphone than being "confused" of having a choice.
Agreed, and sadly the "confused" part of it isn't limited to the cellphone market. As a nation I think Americans cater to stupidity way too much... way too often. Sometimes I wonder how much more progress we'd see if "stupid" wasn't always a priority.
Of course, any attempts to change this would be labeled as fascist. On the other end of that argument, I like Apple products. Without stupid people (see simplicity... which isn't always stupidity... whatever), Apple wouldn't have a design philosophy.
Pewp.
And who the hell is waiting for Acer Me, Too smartphones. Like the world is holding its breath for another Google G1 handset.
you really have nothing better to do?
Sad...
I suspect anybody who buys an Acer smartphone will find it to be a wonderful product, until about 8 months later when it starts running into constant hardware problems, just like everything else Acer has ever made.
Now please excuse me while I send in my iPhone 3G to get its silent mode switch repaired, while I bang my head against the wall wishing I'd gotten a Blackberry or G1.
The 20 dead pixels I successfully rubbed out on my Acer 21" monitor disagree with you! Acer hardware rocks! :(
Asus has zero chance in USA smartphone world.
Only thing they can hope for is iphone death
N we all know that's not happening . 3 years too late Asus.
*cough* A C E R *cough*
You gotta at least give it a chance! Am I the only one that is absolutely SHOCKED at the monthly costs charged by *ahem* a certain US provider that subsidizes a certain piece of hardware? We are in a recession right? I'll try something new, provided I am not locked in with a carrier...a select few have no contracts although you pay for it in less than superior coverage...
I was looking forward to the F900. Are windows phones delayed as well? Sure as ell sounds like it to me.
Hope the wifi from the One isn't indicative of connection abilities.
