I also have the aforementioned lag problems on my 1st gen 8GB model. I have the latest firmware, and I make a regular habit of completely shutting down and restarting the device (at least once a day).

How about just improving the phone reception part???
....or the fact that it takes 10 seconds to open the SMS application, sometimes. Only to have the keyboard lag like a mofo once you do open it. :-|

Not sure what's wrong with your phone. But mine has never had those issues and I have 8 pages full of apps...
