Harmon Kardon has decided to jump into the Blu-ray pushing business with its first player, the BDP 10. This slick number's got all the features you've come to know and love in Blu-ray -- BD-Live and
Bonus View capabilities for online content, advanced audio codec support, 1080 / 24p playback, plus USB ports for DiVX and JPEG display. It'll also boast HDMI 1.3a, Ethernet, coaxial and optical audio outputs plus good old two-channel analog audio outputs. The BDP 10 has only been formally announced for Europe so far, though it's expected elsewhere (including the US) in the coming months. The player has a price tag of about €700 (around $940). Hit the read link for full spec sheet -- but fair warning: it's a PDF.

What a bargain!
for that price, I'd just get a laptop with blu-ray and hdmi out
And you'd regret every minute of it.
Ouch, H/K didn't even really put out any notable high-end DVD players and they have been having a lot of issues with their receivers. I am not sure H/K is in the position to put out a "high-end" Blu-ray player. Especially when Oppo's offering, which is probably going to be the best Blu-ray player out there, is around half the cost.
I also wouldn't be surprised if it is just a rebadged player that H/K made minor tweaks, if any, and slapped their name on.
Since when "H/K" was a high-end brand? H/K is entry/middle level brand of Harman.
And DVDs themselves are pretty far from being a high-end media.
Well, I wouldn't exactly compare H/K to the likes of companies like Rotel, Anthem, Krell or even Mark Levinson. I was using the term loosely in the world of average people home theater. That and like I mentioned, H/K has been on a slide and I guess by not following home theater components closely for a few years, things defiantly have changed. H/K use to have a lot of higher end receivers, with their flag ship being one of the best. Now though, their flag ship receiver wouldn't even make most batt an eye at, and Denon, Marantz and Onkyo/Integra have pulled away.
I auditioned receivers from Denon, HK, Onkyo and Yamaha and the HK won out by a big margin. I don't know where you get that the HK is falling behind. It is true that they have not updated their flagship receiver in 3 years but they are coming out with it this year.
They are falling behind due to all the issues they been having, just check out AVSForum to see, a lot of people have been having problems with H/K. I have always been a fan of H/K receivers, never owned one since I like a marantz better at the time, but it would appear they are not what they used to be. I was in the market for a cheap receiver to be used as a pre/pro and as a stop gap until I could get a dedicated pre/pro (eagerly awaiting the Emotiva XMC-1), the H/K 254 was at the top of my list until I read the seemingly ends stream of issues with it.
A lot of receivers lines seem to have taken a quality hit this year, but from what I have been reading, H/K has been on a slide for a while now. I hope they get out of it, as I side, I have been a fan of their receivers.
Don't these guys know that Blu-Ray is doomed?
It isn't dead and won't die! Sony is lobbying ISP's to put caps on their customers so HD movie streams never occurs.
(I just made that up.)
Ha ha, yeah. Kind of like how PC gaming has been doomed every year since 1979?
Their DVD player was one of the best units I have ever owned. I would assume they would bring the same quality to this unit. Alas, I have a bd-rom/hd dvd hybrid in my HTPC, so I don't really need a standalone player. There is something to be said for a high end piece of kit though.
Plus HK is the sex imo.
By "the sex", you must be referring to the experience of buying an extremely expensive prostitute to avoid getting crabs from a cheaper one, only to discover three things: one, that the expensive prostitute is not the gender you wanted them to be, two, they are crawling with crabs, and three, that the cheaper prostitutes are completely clean and far more attractive. So it goes with Harman/Kardon products. All of them.
And KRS One rejoiced in the naming!
notice it says "supports BD-Live capability" but nowhere does it say the amount of onboard memory that it has.
So will HK be yet another pricey high-end player that decides to skimp out on internal memory so that you have to have a USB stick poking out of the front?
At this point every player should have onboard memory storage.
Looks like a nice quality player, but the specs and price don't add up.
That's because you're leaving out a significant hardware element of the equation: H/K logo sticker = $500
u kidding right?1000$ .u idiots at harman karmon take off a zero.
Heck, just get a PS3 and be done with it.
+1
So basically its like a $900 PS3 that can't play games?
Guys I have a good one how about an Onkyo txsr 607 and Oppo BD83 both for just about a Grand . How do u like that Harman? BTW that player looks very similar to the Denon/Marantz re badged Funai.
> How do u like that Harman?
Harman != HK. HK is just brand now belonging to Harman International.
To me, fan of Hi-Fi, Harman would always be one of the first choices. Even in advent of DVD, they didn't abandoned their stereo heritage and pretty much all their DVD players are also excellent CD players. And their receivers complement that: they are also good at stereo.
Shortly: the device might be a good choice if one builds now a new stereo hi-fi system. Harman has here a huge advantage: you can buy the whole system from them. Loudspeakers, amps, mono-amps, pre-amps, receivers, CD/DVD/BD drives, cables - they produce all that. You do not even need to think about compatibility: it would all work together beautifully.
> BTW that player looks very similar to the Denon/Marantz re badged Funai.
Funai is plain manufacturer. There's nothing new in fact that many CE manufacturers share production facilities. I once seen (at repair center) a map of VHS player brands to VHS player manufacturers: the competitive boundaries were crossed constantly over years. I doubt it is any different now with DVD or BD players.
when is there going to be a budget blu ray player? Come on, all I want is something below $200.
patience, it will come soon enough(black friday)
you can already buy Blu-ray players for $200. Take a look at Best Buy.
I don't get it. Why are there warnings for PDFs in Engadget posts?
I think you have missed several "day zero" PDF exploit alerts.
Some bad media has been put out on Adobe Acrobat. I think the fix has been released...at least for the full versions...not sure about "Reader" yet. The typical...security flaw that could potentially allows someone to gain access to your machine.
The specs are pretty vague. The first thing I'd want to know is what video processor it has. Does it have something that compares to Oppo's Anchor Bay, or Samsung's HQV?
The Correct price is $499!!! not $940.
