Nikon S630 unboxing and hands-on: pretty in pink edition
What's that, another compact digital camera unboxing? Yes, dear readers, we've got a mega-megapixel story cooking for you, and another ingredient has arrived. This time it's Nikon's Coolpix S630, a 12 megapixel, 7x optical zoom compact that features optical stabilization and a particularly vibrant hue. So far we're impressed by the camera's shape, lightness, and build quality, but this one has plenty more testing ahead of it before we make any solid conclusions. Until then, enjoy a few shots of its unveiling.

that's pink?
I don't know if it's my monitor that isn't calibrated correctly, but to me that looks more like a dark red or maroon -- not pink, as per the article would suggest. I imagine it's just the lighting in the actual photograph, though.
yup, looks red.
I wonder how long it will take people to figure out that more megapixels does not = better picture quality.
Most people with these point and shoots could get by with 7 or 8 mega pixels, and a better sensor. Hell, there are some DSLR's out there that only have about that many MP's, and yet they still take great pictures. It's all about the sensor (and the lens, of course).
Of course, to the heads in the marketing department, more MP = mo' money.
*sigh*
No but it does make zooming a lot better. It will also make scrutinizing a photograph more a concumer hobby.
WTF, way to go Engadget comment system. My color comment (above) was intended for the first post by darkmax.
More pixels makes the noise a finer grain, which can be more pleasant in itself.
Could somebody please, please, PLEASE just make lesser-megapixel cam (5? 6?) that can shoot in low light without a flash? Is that really so hard? I'm not asking for photos by candlelight, just normal room illumination at night...
I'm so bloody tired of cameras that can't shoot worth beans over ISO 200 or 400, and I bloody can't afford a T1i now, can I?
Just my two cents. Any other voices want to add to my choir?
get the panasonic LX3... it's the best compact camera for shooting under low light.
LX3 is the one priced the same as a (starter) DSLR right? Tricky choice.
Oh and the LX3 only has a 2.5 times zoom, keep that in mind.
Still a good tip though if you want low-light and some decent quality, I've seen many people say it's great so I'm assuming there's some truth to that.
I received one about a 3 weeks ago and the picture quality is poor / sub par for a $280.00 point & shoot.
My Coolpix 990 that is 10 years old and only 3.4 mega pixels has better image quality. I'm thinking about
selling the s630 on ebay or craigslist. Maybe Nikon has a sensor upgrade in the works and I can send mine in
for an upgrade. My Nikon D200 rocks, the s630 not so much. I'd expect better from Nikon.
The stats look really nice but what about the picture quality. I will gladly buy something with lower megapixels if the picture quality is good. That is why I have a 6 MP camera that I use right now. The image quality (on my old camera) was great but the build quality was not. The zoom stopped working now I am looking for a simple point and click replacement.
Sorry kids... but ALL NIKON CoolPix cameras are STRICTLY off limits. What is that you say? You are daft man! Just type in 'Lens Error Nikon' into Google and read for yourself. Love the Fix for this issue "slap the camera on a hard surface.. you've got nothin left to lose". Sad, when their upscale cameras are sooooooo good.
The girlfriend got one of these (same model and color) the other day and we were both let down by image quality and ended up returning it for a Sony that had few MP but a nice form factor and better image.
