One of our tipsters spotted Sony's latest Blu-ray player on a local Best Buy shelf sporting a $299 price tag. The
BDP-S360 adds the DTS-HD MA decoding you were missing from the
previous model, plus improved DVD scaling and out of the box BD-Live support. Of course one has to ask themselves if, in 2009, a player lacking the
Netflix streaming or Amazon VOD features of
competing hardware, or the DLNA streaming and integrated WiFi of the upcoming
BDP-S560 is really worth braving these H1N1-infested streets, but we'll leave that choice up to you.
[Thanks, RyanD]
I think I'd wait for the S560 to come out, it seems like a lot better model than this one is, but, of course, at a much higher price tag.
"...really worth braving these H1N1-infested streets..."
Casual fear mongering FTW!
but will it blend?
For the last and surely not final time...NO!!!
I'd write something insulting your intelligence but the fact that you basically admitted that this is the most you can contribute to the comments is insulting to yourself.
H1N1=world streets=sony
?? what the?
I cough in your general direction.
if by casually you mean... "no one cares because no one buys bluray discs..."
*checks Torrent progress..
thanks Engadget for your 20th century tech news.
Those DIVX files you downloading play very nicely on a PS3.
GO - BUY - A - PS3
DIVX, MP3, WMA, Video Games, Photos, Music, HOME, PSN, Remote Play, Web Browsing, Upgradable, ect, ect, ect
DITTO! Ma'am, put down the Monster cable, nice and slow. That's it. Now, the overpriced Blu-ray player... There ya go. Now please accompany me to the games section...Ma'am, meet PS3. Oh, and take this $10 HDMI cable too.
I know a lot of people like tradition players, but unitl they go under 200 dollars I would just purchase a PS3. If you never play a game in your life its still justifiable. With an a 40Gb HDD, Wifi, Blu-ray, constant firmware support , half the size with the same price tag, Not to mention its many other features It is a no brainer. Don't want features you say? Consider them a free gift from Sony to your family.
ENOUGH with the PS3 spamming in every Blu-ray thread already! It even made me register here! Anyone that's really serious about their movies knows that even though the PS3 is an absolute bargain if you just want a Blu-ray player, it does not compare to a lot of 'tradition players'. Of which the Sony S360 is a very nice example, at its price.
It does not compare. Care to elaborate?
PS3's Downfalls:
-Heat issues in most A/V racks
-No IR controls (unless you spend a bundle on an external device, see ps3toothfairy or new logitech harmony device)
-No 7.1 Analog Audio Outputs (if you plan on using a mid-range 7.1 system that doesn't decode off of HDMI - although the BDP-S360 doesn't have this either, but the $400 players do)
-Noisy
-Awkward Shape compared with other components
Don't get me wrong, I love my PS3. You just asked what some of the downfalls were. I own the Sony BDP-S550 to make up for these things listed. Playstation 3 is awesome when it comes to media server capability, DivX, etc, but for Blu-Ray its more comparable to the cheap players with everything considered.
You also forgot:
Fan noise: After 20 or so minutes, fans kick in. While quiet, you can hear them in quiet scenes in movies. Annoying.
HD audio: It is predecoded within the PS3 and generally sounds like crud compared to a receiver that decodes it itself. Why? I dont know.
the BDP-350S doesnt have DTS-HD MA?? thought that player had all the hd audio codecs?
Go get a PS3 for that price :D
Sorry Nick, but I can't seem to be able to react to your comment, other than by posting a new comment on the main thread. Anyway, the issues that William mentions are true, but the most important thing to people that are really serious about movies/HDTV/Blu-ray is picture quality, color reproduction, contrast etc. Even though the PS3 does a good job, many standalone players provide better picture quality. Even the Sony S350, which is now superseded by the S360.
Everything at my BBY arrives casually.
I work at sears and we have had this model out for over a week.... hmmmm....
To add one more (there are many) to William's list- DVD upscaling. The PS3 is weak compared to the upscaler of the S350. Now with the S360, this feature was improved upon even more. This is important to people who still have a rather large library of DVDs, but if you want the absolute best... OPPO BDP-83
Is Netflix streaming an issue with some manufacturers? As in they are not allowed to do it?
